8. Searingly honest and revelatory account of the a good journalist’s internal voices on a story like this, and the external constraints on publication. I RELATED BIG TIME.

Superb, Tory. I would have made the same decision as you for the same reason, until she’ ready let it be.

In the last four decades, four Queensland elections have produced hung parliaments. Let me run through them. First, after the coalition split in 1983, the Nationals fell just short of a majority at the election. The lured two Liberals to join the Nationals. .../2 #qldvotes

I have been asked for my thoughts ahead of #qldvotes. The anger against the Bligh government and the Newman government that resulted in change just isn't there right now. Qld enters caretaker mode on Tuesday. There will be more to the story as we approach Oct 31. #qldpol
Queenslanders voting LNP at the Fed election doesn't necessarily mean they will do the same at the state election. #qldpol is a complex situation. I would encourage everyone to listen to this excellent analysis from journalist @BenSmee ahead of #qldvotes.
My personal opinion is that if Fed Labor want to win Qld seats in 2022 they need to deploy a Qld Labor based champion who can rip into the Feds. That person is Qld Deputy Premier @StevenJMiles. #qldpol #qldvotes

Deb Frecklington earnt the nickname Hecklington because of her continual interjections in parliament. She was made assistant treasurer from day 1 in the Newman government & was involved in all the cuts. She admits to taking advice from Lady Flo. #qldpol abc.net.au/news/2020-09-2…
Hecklington. Yelling and banging on the desk. Going on all the time. #qldpol
From the above article, Frecklington refuses to be interviewed by the ABC. The Qld LNP want her to be a miniscule target. They don't want her out there making more gaffes. For them, the friendly PR pages are the way to go. #qldvotes #qldpol

1/TBH I've read the thing, but if there's anything wrong with it, I'm unlikely to spot it. Until yesterday I'd never even read our federal Constitution from start to finish; I was only familiar with parts of it. I have no qualification or experience in constitutional law.
2/From where I stand, the UAP constitution appears to satisfy the Electoral Act's criteria of a 'complying constitution', although as might be expected, the Executive is restricted to Clive and various family members.
3/I reiterate my point that, notwithstanding what's in the party constitution, it is NOT one of the UAP's objects to promote the election of candidate/s to the Legislative Assembly.

Other than that, I can't comment. I just don't have the experience. I'm sorry. #auspol #QLDVotes

1/Hi Tweeps

I've had lots of offers of help on my #ClivePalmer investigation. Thanks heaps, I'll take you up on it, once I know what we're dealing with.

I'm reading through the relevant laws & drafting arguments as I go. I won't know what I've got until I'm through reading.
2/And while I'm grateful the AEC is taking a stand, I'm not so enamoured of their recent performance that I'm willing to abandon my efforts. They may drop their action if Palmer scours up 500 members or provides evidence of such.
3/Sorry if I'm being overly cautious &/or pedantic, but if the Constitution had me scratching my head, the Electoral Act is almost as bad. It's a magistrate's job to interpret the law, but I don't want to just dump a bunch of notes on the QEC, I want to build a proper case.

1/UPDATE: Thanks to @ajmckenna for this. Yesterday the AEC released a notice of intention to deregister #ClivePalmer's United Australia Party, under section 137 (1) (b) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act.

I've got the Act in front of me so I'll cut and paste exactly what it says:
2/ 137. Deregistration of political party on other grounds

(1) If the Electoral Commission is satisfied on reasonable grounds
that:

(b) a political party so registered, not being a Parliamentary party, has ceased to have at least 500 members
3/Knowing Clive, he'll try and get his employees to become members, which is against the Constitution. (Hah! I didn't read it for nothing!)

Anyway, I'll keep working on my independent report just in case he manages to weasel out of this one. But yay AEC!

1/UPDATE ON #ClivePalmer: It's quite late so I'm going to finish up. I've read through the first hundred or so pages of the QLD Electoral Act and have typed up my notes. All relevant provisions have been noted along with page numbers.
2/Regarding the section on function and powers of the QEC, subsection 4 is deliberately broad, stating the QEC 'may do all things necessary or convenient' in connection with the performance of its functions.
3/I argue it is necessary to evaluate CP's actions & motives, as well as the UAP's policy if one exists, w/due consideration to the role Palmer's political presence played in the outcome of the 2018 federal election. What is more necessary than safeguarding our democracy?

1/UPDATE ON #ClivePalmer AND #UAP

I'm exhausted. I've been through the entire Australian Constitution and am partway into the QLD Electoral Act. I need a break & I'm taking one. But I'll let you know what I've got first.
2/I haven't even begun reading the section on fraud yet so I expect to find more solid arguments against Palmer in due course. Right now I'm focusing on the definition of 'political party' according to the Act. My argument is that the UAP does not satisfy the definition.
3/As defined in the Electoral Act, a political party is an organisation 1 of whose objects is promoting the election to the Legislative Assembly of a candidate/s endorsed by it. I say this is NOT one of the UAP's objects. I base this claim not on proof, but on precedence.

1. Re Alan Jones, here’s how a LABOR Govt ended accountability to the people of recipients of PUBLIC broadcasting licences.

In late 1980s I reported the 2nd Australian Broadcasting Tribunal’s inquiry into whether Alan Bond was ‘a fit & proper person’ to own Nine’s TV licence.
2. Sir Joh sued Nine for defamation, and Bond paid him $400,000. An ABT inquiry cleared him of corruption.

Then Jana Wendt, host of Nine’s A Current Affair, obtained an admission from Bond that he paid Sir Joh in exchange for a promise that he could keep doing business in Qld.
3. The ABT announced a 2nd inquiry - bloody obvious Bond witnesses lied in the first. I’d been in Sydney, so scared, so out of my depth, for a little while, and wanted to go home.

No one wanted to cover the 2nd inquiry, ‘cause everyone thought it would be a boring whitewash.

1. Groundhog Day on One Nation preferencing. In 1998, Howard-Abbott urged preferencing One Nation; Costello and Kennett strongly disagreed, saying put ON last, as Labor did.

Then came #qldvotes - Hanson won 11 seats outside Brisbane, and Lib voters fled in Bringing Shane.
2. So Howard put One Nation last at 1998 #ausvotes. ON didn’t win a seat, and in Blair, where Hanson stood, the Lib won with Labor preferences.

Fast forward - she’s back, and the WA Libs preferenced her above Labor. The Feds were fine with it - Hanson had matured, they said.
3. Disaster struck again; the Liberal leader Colin Barnett says the decision cost the Libs several seats after it became a massive election issue.
