Born to Don Claro Recto Sr. of Rosario Batangas & Doña Micaela Mayo of Lipa, among 5 other siblings, 3 of whom died, Claro lived in a generation of great awakening. In 6 years time after his birth, #PH Revolution vs. Spain broke out.
Recto studied Latin at Instituto de Rizal in Lipa, Batangas from 1900 to 1901 & pursued Bachelor og Arts in 1905 at @ateneodemanilau, achieving the highest grade—maxima cum laude. He pursued Law in 1909 at @UST1611official & wrote for several newspapers to support his education.

Born to Ambrosio Sevilla, a Spanish military officer, & Silvina Tolentino (related to revolutionary playwright & writer Aurelio Tolentino), she was reared in robust debate among Filipino intellectuals who were invited by her aunt into their home.
In 1899, she was part of the editorial staff of Antonio Luna's, La Independencia, w/c was one of the Filipino newspapers providing political commentary & news at the time when the fledgling 1st #PH Republic was seeking int'l recognition & est. authority.

On 22 Feb, w/ the call of Jaime Cardinal Sin for people to form human barricades to protect the military defectors led by Defense Sec Juan Ponce Enrile & AFP Vice Chief of Staff Fidel Ramos, thousands responded, bringing w/ them donations, bibles, & rosaries.
On 23 Feb, the 1st attempt to arrest the defectors were repelled by civilians who braved their bare bodies at risk of being crushed by metal tanks or being shot at.

Living at the turn of the 20th c. when #PH was ceded to the U.S., Paz was part of 1st gen of Filipinos educated in the ways & inclinations of America. Her Spanish became "ceremonial," Tagalog "utilitarian", w/ English becoming "the language of her heart."

The unjust execution of the #GOMBURZA in 1872 opened the eyes of Filipinos to the rampant abuse & corruption of the Spanish colonial regime against Filipinos. Fr. Jacinto Zamora, the youngest of the 3, lost his mind prior to being executed.
Jacinto's nephew, Paulino, harbored resentment vs. the oppression. Discontented w/ the religion of the friars, he began to smuggle Spanish Bibles w/c were forbidden at the time. During #PH Revolution in 1896, he was arrested & exiled to Chafarinas Islands in the Mediterranean.

Born in Binondo, Manila on 9 Nov 1827, she hailed from a wealthy (principalia) family, and was the youngest daughter of Lorenzo Alonso, one-time capitan municipal of #Biñan, #Laguna. She married Francisco Mercado in 1848, and bore 11 children.
Much of what we know of Teodora's life came from José Rizal's accounts. José recounted her telling of the tale of the disobedient moth. But instead of being warned, Rizal saw the death of the young moth going near the fire inspiring.
