Which bear is which?🐻

There are three main variants of Russian Bears which are intercepted by @RAFLossiemouth #QRA:

Tu-95 Bear-H // Strategic Bombers
Tu-142 Bear-F // Maritime Recon & ASW
Tu-142 Bear-J // VLF Comms Relay

This thread will show you how to identify variants! 1/4
Tu-95 Bear-H

Usually operating in twos, these strategic bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

You can identify them by looking for a 'dome' on the top of the tail, pointing backwards.

This variant also has a tail gunner position.

Approx. 42 in service.

2/4
Tu-142 Bear-F

Usually operating in twos, this variant is a Maritime Recon & Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft.

You can identify them by looking for the antenna sticking out backwards, which is a MAD - Magnetic Anomaly Detector.

Approx. 22 Tu-142 (F & J) in service.

3️⃣ Quick Reaction Alert scrambles over the space of 6️⃣ days... it's been busy for #TeamLossie πŸ’ͺ

But we're always ready to scramble at a moment's notice, #SecuringTheSkies of the UK πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Today we intercepted & shadowed 2 Russian Tu-142 Bear Fs.

Here's the lowdown πŸ‘‡
1/#QRA
πŸ“‘ Unidentified aircraft were detected by @NATO as they operated within the Alliance's area of interest.

🏝️ This includes sovereign airspace (over a country's land mass and 12 nautical miles off their coastline) and the international airspace around it.

2/#QRA
✈ The aircraft approached the UK's Flight Information Region - airspace managed by @NATS.

⚠️ While this is international airspace, aircraft are expected to speak with Air Traffic Controllers. Not doing so is hazardous for other air users such as civilian airliners.

🚨 Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons were scrambled today from their temporary base at Leuchars Station in Fife.

✈️ This was in response to Russian military aircraft operating in international airspace, but within @NATO's Air Policing Area.

Here's what you need to know πŸ‘‡

1/#QRA
🎯 Unidentified aircraft were tracked as they entered the northern @NATO Air Policing Area.

✈️ This was monitored by the Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem, Germany.

⏳ In the UK, Control & Reporting Centres at @RAFBoulmer & @RAFScampton prepared to scramble...

2/#QRA
🚨 @Luftforsvaret, the Royal Norwegian Air Force, scrambled their Quick Reaction Alert F-16s to intercept and identify these aircraft.

πŸ” They were visually identified as two Russian Tu-160 Blackjacks - long-range, supersonic bombers.

#TeamLossie has had a busy Saturday!

🚨 We were scrambled earlier this morning as two Russian Tu-142 Bear F aircraft approached UK airspace. It was a rather unusual scramble for the @RoyalAirForce, and we're going to tell you all about it...

1/ #QRA
❓ What happened?

πŸ“‘ The Control & Reporting Centre at @RAFBoulmer was alerted to two tracks heading towards UK airspace. The team of surveillance operators were tracking the two aircraft at all times alongside their @NATO counterparts.

2/ #QRA
All of this activity was coordinated through the @NATO Combined Air Operations Centre (known as a CAOC) in Uedem, Germany. They are also monitored by the National Air and Space Operations Centre (known as the NASOC) at
@RAFHighWycombe.

Have you ever wondered how we know when unidentified aircraft approach UK airspace?

This week's #PhoonFriday is looking at some of the smaller @RoyalAirForce units dotted around Scotland that directly support our Quick Reaction Alert mission.

Did you know there are three Remote Radar Heads in Scotland?

πŸ“‘ Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides
πŸ“‘ Saxa Vord, in the Shetlands
πŸ“‘ Buchan, on the Aberdeenshire coast

#SupportingQRA 2/7
In simplistic terms, radars send energy into the skies.

If the energy hits an object in the air such as an aircraft, it 'bounces back'.

The positions of all objects in the air are then plotted automatically and fed back into an overall picture for the UK.

Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons from #TeamLossie, along with QRA from our @NATO allies launched today to intercept two Russian Tu-142 'BEAR-F' aircraft that approached the UK and NATO's area of interest.

Here's what you need to know in our QRA mega-thread πŸ‘‡

🚨 Unidentified aircraft were detected as they approached @NATO's area of interest.

Norwegian QRA scrambled F-16s to intercept. They ID'd two Russian Tu-142s.

#TeamLossie QRA Typhoons scrambled soon after as the Tu-142s tracked south towards the North Sea.

#QRA 2/14
The Russian BEAR-F operated around the North Sea for some time, before returning north. They were met by Norwegian F-35s, who continued shadowing them until they left @NATO's area of interest.

Early this morning, #TeamLossie launched two Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons to intercept and shadow two Russian Tu-142 Bear-F aircraft as they approached the UK's area of interest.

This thread is everything you need to know πŸ‘‡

1/7 #QRA
The Russian aircraft entered the UK Flight Information Region and were intercepted west of the Shetland Islands. At no time did the two Bear-F aircraft enter UK sovereign airspace. Our Typhoons shadowed them as they tracked south towards Ireland.

2/7 #QRA
They continued around the west coast of Ireland towards the south west of the UK. Our Typhoons remained off the coast near Penzance, with our colleagues from @Armee_de_lair taking over the intercept.

Two Russian Tu-142 Bears were tracked as they approached the UK's area of interest.

While they didn't enter our sovereign airspace, their activities do have a considerable impact on other airspace users - namely civilian airliners.

#QRA 2/7
This map shows their route (thanks @MIL_Radar!).

Two Russian aircraft were intercepted and shadowed: one Bear-F, which is an Anti Submarine Warfare platform, and one Bear-J, which is a communications relay platform.

They pose two potential problems:

With #HXChallenge about to wrap up, here's an overview of what we now know: #HXhanke #turpo=#sΓ€kpol
#Eurofighter (still prefer #Typhoon) is strongly pushing the European angle with most major European powers having a stake in the program. Total sovereignty over mission data was also a big deal, and the (re)newed focus on EW-capabilities was also promoted
The Eurofighter has a bunch of strong cards: the independence angle is a big deal for Finland, as is the large number of major operators (second only to F-35) and the fact that it is likely the premier #QRA platform of the lot.
