It is a joy to be the Mayor of #RDGUK Thank you to my fellow councillors and especially my dear friends, @lengmicky and @AliceMpofuColes who proposed and seconded my nomination last night. My partner @REDCaversham will be my escort.
A thread 1/9
The Mayor of Reading should be seen as a friend to everyone who wants the best in our town. Every Mayor brings their own style and priorities. Here are mine
2/9
My first priority is to support sustainability and the drive to net zero. There are no prizes for showing up in a so-called “race to zero". This isn't a race: we can’t win individually. It requires all of us to work together.

‘From China with Love’: profile of a #volunteer. Kiki was born in China, an hour’s drive from Hong Kong. In 2016 she visited the UK for first time and was lost late at night one evening in London, not knowing how to get back to her accommodation. #volunteeringstory
Along came the man who (though she didn’t know it yet) was the love of her life, Dean, who helped her find her way. Exchanging numbers and staying in touch turned into a long-distance relationship and an eventual decision to move to the UK permanently, which she did in March 2020
... just in time to 'enjoy' the first lockdown! Arriving in Reading determined to plunge herself into British culture, Kiki searched @eventbrite for interesting social possibilities. She booked herself on one of the last local events that were able to go ahead face to face...

1/8 Welcome to the #FidgetAndBob Kennet Island Tribune

We have kept trading through lock-down with the support of our wonderful customers. It's been tough, as we've changed a lot of what we do and how we do it. Nonetheless, we are one of the lucky ones.
2/8

There are many wonderful independent cafes and restaurants in a precarious position and wondered what positive actions WE can take right now to support them.

1. If they are trading, make an effort to support them with your custom. Buy what you can from them..
3/8

..rather than just what you usually get.

2. If they are not trading, buy a voucher that you can use when they re-open.

3. If there is a friend or family special occasion coming up, find a local business near them to source a gift.

(a thread, #RdgUK)
Sharon and Robert were both born, bred and raised in #RdgUK. They met over 45 years ago in Robert’s uncle’s launderette, and were engaged in the Abbey ruins on 18th June, 1978.

They are together and still going strong 43 years later.

Let’s talk about bull semen, and art.

(a thread)
The @urbandictionary defines ‘sire’ as an

‘Old tyme'y way of referring to a king or lord. Usually used now to sarcastically refer to somebody with an inflated ego.’

It also means the male parent of an animal, especially when it comes to bulls.
We need semen to make more cattle (spoiler), but it’s actually quite rare for a cow to be impregnated the old-fashioned way.

Instead, many farmers find a bull with the right characteristics, buy its semen and then artificially inseminate their herd.
