My latest for @Africanarguments, with Catherine Windey and @olivierabahati1: “Congo’s oil auction: foiling climate colonialism or filling the coffers?” (Long!) thread. africanarguments.org/2022/08/congo-… (1/N)
On 28-29 July, the #DRC government put up 30 oil and gas blocks up for auction; with many of them overlapping with protected areas in the world’s second-biggest rainforest including the #Virunga UNESCO World Heritage site.
greenpeace.org/africa/en/pres… (2/N)
Is there a real risk of oil drilling in these areas? We argue that this most probably is not the case, as the auction has two other aims: producing rents; and reclaiming its sovereignty, particulary in the environmental sector. africanarguments.org/2022/08/congo-… (3/N)

Colonial conceptions of customary tenure continue to inform conceptions of the customary today. The "customary" is not fixed from some time immemorial; it has been reshaped for ideological & political purposes.

"Harvesting the oceans under the Blue Economy": "The #OECD suggests that the #ocean economy is likely to outpace the global economy in the next 15 years."

Under guise of protecting #biodiversity:

"Framed as perhaps the last untapped, under-explored & under-exploited region in the world, the Pacific #Ocean is set to be a contested space for resources."

#WorldEconomicForum #SDGs
"The #BlueEconomy heralds a new race to carve up the Pacific, turning the Pacific Ocean, from surface to seafloor, into a crowded/contested space. Pacific state leaders are courted w/ economic gains that are a fraction of the value of the ocean resources that will be #extracted."

We can keep flying if we just offset the emissions, right? 💸➡️🌳

No, because so-called carbon offsets pose many problems and in most cases do not compensate emissions - on the contrary. #CarbonOffset #ClimateJustice

Let us explain. Thread. ⬇️ Image
What are offsets?
#Offsets are projects meant to reduce emissions that occur elsewhere. #Offsetting projects are mostly located in countries of the Global South. Many of them are hydroelectric projects, claiming to prevent production of energy from fossil fuels.

Also forest conservation projects, operators of tree plantations, or organisations that distribute climate-friendly cooking stoves to women in rural parts can sell offset credits.

"The reason that the aviation and other large polluting industries like offsets is that they let them appear to be addressing climate change while at the same time continuing to burn fossil fuels."

All aboard the Global New Deals for Nature train. #NewDealForNature, Voice for the Planet, Global Deal For Nature. Here we have science is being used as a tool and even a weapon to privatize the commons under the guise of protecting nature, climate & biodiversity.
We are subjected to the branding "United Behind the Science" with a heavy emphasis from the face of the campaign (exploited Thunberg) to "listen to the science". Unite Behind the Science is not meant to protect Earth. It is meant to unleash a new era of privatization & plunder.
