Malaysia’s unemployment rate came off of a peak of 5.3% in May 2020 to 4.9% in June and 4.7% in July. While this is good news, we shouldn’t take the headline number alone as cause to celebrate.

It is important to look behind the headline and understand the quality of the jobs being created.

While the definition of unemployment works under normal times, it is arguably an inadequate measure for the extraordinary period we are in. 2/14
The reason is that to be considered as employed under the definition used by @StatsMalaysia, a person must have had worked for at least an hour in a week for some kind of pay. 3/14
