New paper out! Our own David Zander has successfully published his thesis work in @cddpress’ Cell Death & Disease!

Just to highlight this: David is an MD but he worked his tail off pipetting this study! A big Thank You to @TRR179_2 for the stipend!

So what is it about?
• Damage to our cells’ genome DNA can lead to #cancer if it goes unnoticed (cell not committing suicide).
• Vice versa, many chemotherapies (and radiotherapy!) are based on killing cells by inducing #DNADamage.

In his study, David used…
…live cell microscopy (@EssenBioScience) to monitor cell proliferation and death upon treatment with doxorubicin (chemotherapeutic inducing DNA breaks) or gamma-irradiation (γIR). As expected, both treatments kill cells ⬇️

Congratulations, Agnieszka @BartenschlagLab! We actually began working on this during the last pandemic threat (#Zikavirus) and the way through editor and reviewer offices was not exactly aided by the current pandemic. But now it’s finally out!…
Through TLR3, ZIKV induces proinflammatory #cytokines (IL-6, IL-10), which trigger STAT3 signaling, which in turn dampen #interferon responses. As #RIGI and #MDA5 sense ZIKV and induce IFN production, this antagonism eventually aids viral replication as we can show.
This is all so weirdly complex– a lot of work ahead to understand the details of innate immune regulation in virus infection. Ha, saying that– if you made it all the way to here in this thread, consider contributing to this special issue on exactly this topic ⬇️
