(1/16) Today again a more theoretical thread about #Germanic #history. It is about a theory of the origin of the first Germanic major #tribes:
the #Iron and #Amber theory!

(Many used images are from external sources, which I will gladly share if needed.) ImageImage
(2/16) But let's start from the beginning. What is a #Germanic "major #tribe" anyway?
Around the year 0, hundreds of small #tribes lived in #Germania. About 400 years later, however, they were seemingly replaced by a few large tribes, such as the #Goths, #Franks, or #Alemanni. Image
(3/16) #Researchers therefore asked themselves early on how this development had come about. It was usually assumed that #Germanic #tribes living near the #borders of the #Roman #Empire formed #raiding parties, in order to be able to undertake more successful #raids. ImageImage

Being a superpower isn’t just economical or military.
It’s a brand.
And a brand that should sell.
And history has shown that all great powers were brands that sold. And the humans of earth bought with their heaters and minds.
#superpower #world
Quite simply, now, #Russia and #China haven’t made themselves institute strong brands
The #Chinese are lately realising this. The #Russians no
They won’t
Not how they work and think
Being super BRAND power means humans of Earth wanting to be like the citizens of a superpower.
Being a super #BRAND power means your educational institutions, #lifestyle, #habitus, #culture, #language, #food, #traditions EVERYTHING is presented as the best on the planet.
And it usually is.
In the superpower game, 💩 sells some of the time. Not all.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Temple of Bacchus🏛️🍷

(1/6) Located in Baalbek, #Lebanon, the Temple of #Bacchus is an amazing example of Imperial Roman architecture, adorned with Corinthian columns and lavishly decorated ceilings and parapets.

#Classics #Roman #Archaeology #History
(2/6) Likely constructed under emperor Antoninus Pius (138 - 161CE), the temple is a massive 66m long, 35m wide and 31m tall, which is larger than the Parthenon in Athens! 8 columns wide and 15 columns deep, it features a walled cult room split between two floors and a crypt.
(3/6) Despite its namesake, it is unknown as to which deity it was dedicated. Archaeological evidence from the site however suggests #Bacchus, as the interior design depicts a god of wine and ecstasy and other Bacchic symbolism like Maenads and revellers.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Temple of Garni 🏛️

(1/7) The Temple Garni is situated in the village of Garni in #Armenia, and stands as the only Greco-Roman temple in the nation. It sits on a cliff edge by the Azat River and the Gegham mountains.

#Classics #Archaeology #History
(2/7) Constructed in the 1st century CE, it was most likely built under the Armenian king Tiridates I as a temple of Mihr, the Armenian sun god. Supported and crowned as king by the Roman Emperor Nero, it is thought Tiridates adopted Mihr as his patron deity and protector.
(3/7) Stylistically, the temple is a blend of Ancient Greek architecture and local Armenian influences. Decorated with Ionic columns, it is constructed with local grey basalt and without mortar, instead being held together with iron clamps. It also features floral friezes.

If you were an average #Roman, you would have had only basic facilities to cook in your apartment - so most Romans lived on takeaways. You may have popped along to your local Popina (Wine Bar) which usually had a limited menu of simple foods like olives, bread and stew. Image
Popina's did not have the best of reputations and were often associated with illegal and immoral behaviour. As well as food and drink, sex was often also on offer and also gambling, even though gambling with dice was illegal Image
For a more substantial takeaway menu, #Romans could go to a thermopolium (cook shop) - it offered a more varied fast food menu served at a counter - just like this one, the Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus from Pompeii. Image

Reeeeeeeeeeesulta que...

...vostè, és alcaldessa d’una ciutat costanera catalana. I té un projecte, que és construir coses, edificis, coses, edificis, coses. En uns terrenys que té per allà, per la vila...

(phil⬇️⬇️⬇️. Ho sento: és llarg. Molt llarg. Absteniu-vos impacients...)
Doncs bé: vostè vol fer això, peeeeeerò, ves per on...

...en el solar, ja hi ha coses.

Coses velles.

Coses #romanes.

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

Today's #MuseumsUnlocked topic is so interesting to me that I like to share an entire thread, instead of few tweets.
In all the territories of their Empire, #Romans built cities that always share common features and monuments: one of the most recognizable was the #Amphitheatre
Let's start our trip to the Romans amphitheatres from the Capital. The Flavian Amphitheatre, alias the #Colosseum (72-80 AD), is still the most iconic monument of #Rome. It could hold 50-80.000 people, assisting a variety of public spectacles, even sea battle! #MuseumsUnlocked
Also the already mentioned #Aquileia used to have its own amphitheatre, built in the I cent AD. Preserved only in remains, it was identified in the XIX cent. by E. Maionica and is currently under investigation by @UniVerona: looking forward for new discoveries! #MuseumsUnlocked
