Worse still: VJ didn't even go to Stanford, never stepped foot on the campus, certainly didn't graduate.

...Valerie Bowman, however, graduated from Stanford in 1977. She then went on to marry William Jarrett in 1983, taking his name. /1
So here's the real conspiracy: how long has Stanford had a time machine?! Why did they travel to the future to find out what her last name would be & to get a photo of her, age 60, for the yearbook instead of using a photo of her, aged 19, her age at her 1977 graduation?! /2
Anyway, in all seriousness: VJ was born in Iran, and spent 5 years there, before returning to America with her parents. Neither she, nor her parents, ever practiced Islam (unless she was secretly radicalized before age 5, so that one day, she could "make America more Muslim".) /3

THREAD: To be clear, the #SamanthaBee story is a distraction (as was the #Roseanne story.) But given that I blog/tweet about feminism, I feel the need to comment. /1
I'll start by saying, I never use the "C-word" (writing it this way feels stupid- but I actually don't even usually say it). I think it's vile and angry and when used by men, always has a menace/threat involved (in the US- I understand in the UK it's used more often.) /2
I wouldn't have used the word. But I actually know a lot of feminists who do- in an attempt to reclaim it and take back some power (see Nasty Woman t shirts) I see Samantha Bee in that vein. I don't agree with it & cringe every time she uses it. /3

I don't agree with the cancellation of #Roseanne . Why? I don't believe racism was in her heart or mind when she made the comment. It was one of a series of jokes focused on her targets' intellect & world view, and she didn't stop to think about the term's use as a slur.
(1) If I thought Roseanne had intentionally lashed out with a racist remark, I would be on the bandwagon with #ABC 's decision. But I do not, and I'm doubtful that ABC leadership actually thinks that she is a racist.
(2) ABC seized the opportunity to crucify her and end the show because they were safe in doing so. They wanted the show off the air, notwithstanding its high ratings, because it ran counter to #MSM 's messaging.

THREAD: The US @StateDept released its annual #ReligiousFreedom report today. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, here's where #LGBT issues come up in this year's reports.
#LGBT issues feature in this year's reports on Australia, Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Costa Rica, Greece, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, the Maldives, Mauritania, New Zealand, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Sudan, Syria & Turkey. (And I probably missed others.)
The report on #Australia stays pretty neutral in its discussion of the legalization of same-sex marriage and subsequent push for religious exemptions under Australian law. state.gov/documents/orga…

ABC’s “Roseanne” is one of the few popular tv programs to feature a pro-Trump character, but conservatives shouldn’t get used to seeing similar ideology on the sitcom for long. The show will lean away from politics next season... So they claim. #Roseanne
