Tell me if you would've preferred this for V8:

Instead of Salem showing up, Atlas has 3 days before her arrival & all our heroes are divided. And so, V8 will be a battle & race between former allies as they all try desperately to prepare for the nightmare to come.

In this volume 8, James isn't a genocidal tyrannical lunatic either. Rather, he's still the same empathetic James we've known him as all this time, but you see him no longer holding back on making really tough-but logical-calls, yet we still see how these trouble him.
Add in some unexpected faces joining James' ranks like Qrow, Pietro and even Ren, along with the two sides fighting each other, grimm activity steadily increasing more and more as Salem draws nearer & Cinder, Arthur, Tyrian and Neo still being thorns in everyone's sides.

Imagine if we could've changed who got thrown into the void at the end of the Atlas arc. I would've had the following members from the Party fall; Weiss, Yang, Emerald & Nora.

#RWBY #RWBY8
Jaune & Ren would logically be in Vacuo helping with the evacuation, Ruby would survive to both deal with the "death" of her sister-like Winter-& truly deal with the ramifications of her actions in Atlas. Blake would now have to cope with losing Yang & Weiss before her eyes>
and it would allow for some potential development and even discussion into just what the hell is going on between them. Emerald honestly needs a bit more meat to her redemption arc, so let's have her get dropped into the void directly by Cinder, with her seeing Cinder do it.

So episode 7 of volume 8 has just been released and I must say...I don't know how I feel about this episode. I wouldn't call it good, yet at the same time I wouldn't call it bad either...this is a mixed bag. So I guess I'll just go in order.
So Salem's invasion is finally underway and her grimm army are swarming and overpowering the Atlas army. While I do like the panic and destruction the grimm are causing and seeing them apparently slowly overtake the army, the writers have made the Atlas military seem so poor.
Then there's the citizens of Atlas just chilling and walking around like it's a normal day, until the flying grimm get into the city...I'm sorry but what?! Even if you want to say they're confident in their military, you'd think they wouldn't be so carefree & out in the open! ๐Ÿ˜ต

Kerry, congratulations. You've all managed to get me legitimately hyped for what's to come in this volume. Do keep up the good work, as this is yet another episode where I find far more good in it than bad. So let's get the bad out first.
First, let's cover the biggest negative of this volume, Cinder's backstory. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid backstory but it's literally just a dark Cinderella story that takes place in a hotel. This was NOT worth the 6-7 years of anticipation and feels pretty lackluster.
The next negative would have to be the major worldbuilding issue we get from Cinder's mentor, where he says at 17, she'll be able to take the "Huntsmen Exam". I'm sorry, what? So this backstory & Maria basically disvalue the existence of the academies completely, huh?

Theyโ€™re not the same picture but itโ€™s an interesting parallel nonetheless.

In case anyone was wondering, for me the main difference is that I think Ironwood was being much more genuine. Both Blake and Winter were groomed and manipulated, but Adam did it all knowingly while I don't think Ironwood was doing it as intentionally (not defending him though.)
Expanding on this, Blake's storyline with Adam was very much a narrative of personal abuse showcasing how predatory individuals take advantage of people, while Winter's arc with Ironwood is more a commentary on the dangers of authoritarian militaristic systems as a whole.

#CJs2Cents: Sooo, where's Salem, her army and the whale grimm? Where are the Atlas soldiers & droids stationed in Mantle? Why are they knocking out security cameras?

And did you hear Jaune at the end? This means that bike scene happened. So much for the tension. ๐Ÿ˜‘

In what should be the most intense volume we've had yet where our "heroes" finally square off against our main antagonist for the very first time with so much at stake & war at their doorstep...we get wacky hoverbike hijinky. Way to kill that tension you left us on in volume 7...

#CJs2Cents: Thanks to some lovely people, I've come to realize this isn't a flashback. They're in Pietro's office & it's been apparently cleaned out, and the snow outside means the heaters are down in Mantle...they're literally having fun during what should be war.

So all that tension they worked hard to create at the end of v7? Dashed in a couple of seconds. And no, there's a difference between having a soft/light-hearted moment & having your non crazy/bloodknight characters HAVING FUN during what you set up as a dire situation.
#RWBY
And wrapping this up, I don't see why they're doing this. They literally did the Battle of Beacon well. The Fall was constantly framed as something very serious that everyone was doing their best to fight against & none of the heroes were "having fun" in it. No excuses...
