So my two girlfriends and I agreed that this Chinese Golden Week, we will refresh by travelling to Thailand.
After a lot of hard working, between our demanding classes we managed to save enough for the trip.

Our flight was scheduled to leave at 1345hrs but it was delayed until 1655hrs which had us land at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi airport at 2000hrs.

Still processing the powerful discussion we had today in our #MA @ARUSociology session on #DecolonisingtheUniversity. A student shared her experiences of growing up in apartheid South Africa & feeling validated & 'seen' by the reading material. Became emotional as she talked
about how #apartheid affected her secondary & higher education in South Africa. Another shared his experiences of racism & racial abuse at his place of work in London, and how he'd envisioned a different kind of life in the UK when he migrated from Nigeria three years
ago. A third talked about being British in Zimbabwe and how her family had tried to convince her that the 'whites' were there to help the 'black people' and how she learnt to resist the 'civilising' narrative of #empire. A fourth discussed how her godfather rolled his eyes at her

I was pulled out of a line at @HeathrowAirport recently, 'randomly'. I didn't object, but said "what a surprise". The officer became very annoyed.
"What do you mean by that?"
- "You want me to be honest?"
"Please.
This is what happened. Bear with me. It's important.
#Thread #Race
- "I hardly find it surprising that you stop a man with a beard who looks non-white."
"Oh, we're going down *that* road, are we? You have a chip on your shoulder, huh?"
- "A chip on my shoulder? No. I just study & research this as an academic. So, no, I don't find it surprising."
"You teach this stuff? That's very troubling."
- "No, mate, it's troubling that you find that troubling. You want to take a look in the bag, be my guest."
"It's not mate, it's officer."
- "oh? It's Dr Hellyer, FYI."
"OK. Show me your passport, please sir."
- "Here you go."

SOOOO excited for the next installment of @ACRMS #RaceB4Race symposia @FolgerLibrary next week. FYI, this is ongoing series of symposia that centers the work of scholars of color. Thread of random thoughts about ways to go forward re #RaceB4Race and #ShakeRace.
warning, I kinda suck at threads, so grab yo coffee. /1.5
I have been thinking of things that need to be done to elevate this work/change the fields. Much of this is #ShakeRace specific, but some have broader applications. /2

Things they don’t tell you when you take up road cycling (a thread)

1- you will go numb in places you didn’t think were capable of such a thing. Girls, I’m talking intimate, boys, I’m talking Johnson.

#road #cycling #bike #ride #FitnessMotivation
2- you must fuel! Also, hitting the wall is called bonking. I’m a child. Every time someone says they’re bonking, that’s me laughing.

#roadbike #carbs #fuel #sweet
3- flies. Actually no, they’re not flies, they’re bullets. Today has been the day of the black beetle... oh my word do they hurt! If I hadn’t been wearing glasses, I’d be blind. Good protein though. Must have eaten thousands.

Woke up to a Google alert about this new review of #BodymindsReimagined in American Literary History by Rebecca Wanzo (@rawreader) & I am just so honored & amazed.

I’ll share my favorite quotes below! Happy to send folks a copy who don’t have access!

academic.oup.com/alh/advance-ar…
“Schalk offers the most paradigm-shifting challenge to what is speakable and unspeakable: the problem of linking blackness with disability and how to reframe our treatment of these categories”

😳😲🤯
“The issue of pleasure is one of the most radical interventions of the book, thus modeling a new ideal of what the nexus of race and the speculative genre can do.” (And shout out to @adriennemaree, @WalidahImarisha & @OctaviasBrood) #pleasureactivism

White people and #whiteness are the center of the #tRump presidency. His primary concern is to defend, protect and promote it. Self-identified #Republicans absolutely love him for it. nytimes.com/2019/07/14/opi… via @NYTOpinion #RacistInChief #WhiteNationalism
#tRump is otherizing brown-skinned members of Congress by implying they are foreigners who may not love this country.

Fraser contends with liberal feminism’s troubling convergence with #capitalism, and the ways in which #feminism can provide a veneer of liberation for a system of relentless #exploitation@DissentMagdissentmagazine.org/article/nancy-…
The gendered separation of #social reproduction from #economic production constitutes the principal institutional basis for women’s subordination in #capitalist societies.
When a society simultaneously withdraws public support for social reproduction and conscripts the chief providers of it into long and grueling hours of paid work, it depletes the very social capacities on which it depends. The result is a “crisis of care”

Here's why Tory MP Michael Cooper should be ashamed of himself.

A primer on systemic racism for white people (and everyone else).

The parliamentary committee discussing online hate invited a witness to speak. The dynamics of the relationship is necessary for context. The witness came with vulnerability, representing a marginalized people group, to discuss hate & racism.

/2
The witness connected dots btwn online conservative commentators & the NZ terrorist shooter, citing the former as a source that radicalized the latter.

Cooper vehemently opposed the "link [btwn] conservatism with violent extremist attacks."

Here's why he's right and wrong.

I finally forced myself to watch @ava’s #13th on @netflix. I know I am massively tardy to the party, but racial documentaries are hard for me. It was, of course, devastating, so I’m glad I’m grading at home today so I can process, seethe, mourn & completely avoid wypipo.
My first reaction was “Fuck, this [the systemic oppression of black people & destruction of black lives] is never going to end. Not until we upend every last piece of the existing systems.” Then I sat overwhelmed & crying bc the earth/humanity may not last long enough for that.
And let’s be clear, I read The New Jim Crow years ago (which is why I felt like I didn’t *need* to watch 13th), but watching the documentary tie these legacies to images/audio of #NotMyPresident brought it home in a new way emotionally for me rather than just intellectually.

I’ve had multiple ppl tell me that if I don’t get tenure I have a lawsuit on my hands & yet a part of me is still like: Racism & sexism are wild & I trust no white man’s “meritocracy”. I’ll feel confident I have tenure when I see the paperwork that says so & not a second sooner.
There are too many horror stories of talented, accomplished women of color being denied tenure, particularly at elite universities. There are too many stories of people working themselves into health crises & strained relationships for 6 yrs only to be told no.
You can’t ask me to put faith in a system that has harmed & failed so many people I admire. I will believe it when I see it. And in the meantime, I’ll be spending this summer preparing myself for what I do if it’s a no.

@AndreVanDelft @JoostNiemoller @Nuon (S)linkse ongein of bevolkingsmanipulatie, maar door wie?
Who’s behind the #race #mixing agenda in advertising?

christophercantwell.com/2018/06/24/who…
@AndreVanDelft @JoostNiemoller @Nuon Long-standing CEO of Publicis (1987–2017) has been Maurice Lévy, who cited his Rabbi grandfather as his greatest inspiration. Lévy has been honored by the Anti-Defamation League, for his work fighting anti-Semitism, and his relentless promotion of “diversity” 😈😨
@AndreVanDelft @JoostNiemoller @Nuon What better way to destroy the #white #nuclear family, than to encourage white people, especially white women, to mate with foreign men that are unlikely to support them or raise their children. If you wanted to create a chaotic society that is easy to lord over. 🤔 NWO?

Ooooh this is so great! I’ve been waiting to see it come to fruition. @TempleUnivPress is officially launching #DisColor an academic book series on #race, #racism, #disability & #ableism with editors @JulieMinich, Cindy Wu & Nirmala Erevelles!

These editors are excelllent humans who have long term investments in the field, who have themselves been innovators in critical race disability theory. My book heart (& manuscript) is with @lizault & @DukePress, but others should seriously consider publishing in this series!
I plan to read every book in this series. I really think it’s gonna be that good.

Dot Connection: DIA (Denver International Airport) -> LOOP CAPITAL

Both things Q has posted about separately are connected. media.8ch.net/file_store/310…

#Qanon #UraniumOne #Loop #LoopCapital #DenverInternationalAirport #DIA #QTeam #GreatAwakeningWorldwide
the loop starts at the 1 trillion dollar stimulus - and they give that money to Loop Capital - Michele Obama's brother oversees it and despite whatever it was meant to be paid for instead ends up looping back to bad actors. I think... #Qanon #Looper #LoopCapital #MichelleObama
based on #Qdrops that includes funding organizations like this nationalsecurityaction.org/who-we-are/ which hires ex government employees - slush funding out tax dollars as needed to buy people off as an "analytical service" #Qanon #Qteam #Slushfunds #LoopCapital #Analytics #GreatAwakening

Anyone that knows a lot about the middle east want to help me out with some bots/trolls?
They don't like #Iran or #Qatar
I found them while looking at the #Russia hashtag, they are either bots or a coordinated trolls. Haven't figured it out yet.
I highlighted them here in the tweets I pulled for #russia
They all use the same naming convention, have similar creation dates, and similar "stats', they also have very similar descriptions.
Regular twitter data never looks like that.
After pulling a timeline for about 20 of them you can see they are tweeting close to the same thing at the same time.

#Privilege means you’re given unearned advantages based on a social norm or value. #Race, #gender, #class, #disability, & #sexuality are all major social systems which value certain bodies & behaviors over others.
Fatphobia & slim/size privilege are produced by systems of gender, race & class. How? By the production of beauty norms & medical standards of health which are based on middle class whiteness & directed mostly violently at women.
Thought big booties are recently valued (notably most when they are not on the bodies of black women, especially fat black women), the bodies historically most celebrate were/are thin white women. This is an ideal that harms all women & encourages us to all hate our bodies.

My #BlackHistoryMonth story:

In February of my senior year of high school, there was a Black History Month presentation scheduled. But attendance was optional.

The optional attendance policy upset the black students in the school. They staged a walkout during the lunch periods.
My 4th period class -- lunch periods shared the same time slots as 4th period classes -- was all white students, so we sat in our room during the walkout, which I think we could see from our window. None of us kids really understood why the walkout was occurring.
After all, it was a Black History Month presentation, so why should everyone have to attend it, instead of just students who were interested in Black History (whatever that meant), of whatever race? The attitude in the room was one of mainly confusion.

Can I instead write an article about how the concept of guilty pleasures in based in classism, racism, & sexism instead? Because “low brow” often means poor/working class, racialized or feminized things? How bout that article?

#AcademicTwitter #Elitism
Further, half the things people are replying about—sci-fi (my own research), reality TV & gaming—are things people do actual real research on already.
I also feel like this article concept is another way of performing that academics can’t embrace pleasure, that work can not be pleasurable. I say fuck that and read @adriennemaree’s new book Pleasure Activism next month when it drops.
