🧵 In 50-50 Wisconsin, the GOP has so gerrymandered the Assembly maps that it needs to flip just 5 of the 99 seats to win a supermajority.

But redistricting made one R seat a toss-up: WI’s 84th. The great LuAnn Bird @LuAnnBird84 is ready to win. Help her: secure.actblue.com/donate/luann-b…
@LuAnnBird84 There are Democratic seats in the Wisconsin Assembly that, due to redistricting, will now be extremely hard to win. But the 84th went in the other direction. In 2020, it was Biden 43.8% to Trump’s 54.6%. But in the newly-drawn district, Biden got 51.1%. It could go blue in '22!
The chance of GOP supermajorities in both chambers of our state legislature is frighteningly real. It’s the explicit goal of the GOP. And if the GOP achieves this goal, it can crush voting rights by overriding Gov. Evers’s veto.

NEWS: Last week, Trump endorsed candidate Tim Michels for Wisconsin governor. Yesterday, a WI voter filed a legal challenge to Michels’ nomination signatures for failing to follow clear election integrity guidelines.

Read on/retweet to help us hold Trump + Michels accountable.
Context:

To run for statewide office in Wisconsin, a candidate has to meet some key requirements. Chief amongst them is that they have to submit at least 2,000 valid signatures from Wisconsin residents to appear on the ballot.
This is something every candidate for statewide office has to do.

A couple of weeks ago, our great Governor Tony Evers did just that, submitting signatures from across Wisconsin.

END OF MONTH DEADLINE: As goes Wisconsin in 2022, so goes the nation in 2024. But our state is a jump ball—and in the Senate, Gov, and down-ballot races, the stakes are massive. It’s time to hit the gas. Help us reach our $6k target by midnight 5/31?

There are two battles in Wisconsin that will shape politics nationwide—the race for Governor, with multiple Republicans squaring off to challenge Democratic Gov Tony Evers @Tony4WI, and the Senate race, where we have an opportunity to defeat self-serving Ron Johnson.
First, let’s talk about the race for Wisconsin governor. This is probably the most important race in the country for preventing a second Trump presidency—WI was razor-thin in ‘16 and ‘20. With elections this close and ongoing GOP attacks on our democracy, the Gov is key here.

Wisconsin has a pre-Civil War abortion ban that could take effect if #RoeVWade is overturned. And WI Republicans want to go even *further.* In this moment of crisis, it’s even more critical to reelect Gov @Tony4WI and AG @JoshKaulWI. Thread on the state and stakes of the fight →
@Tony4WI @JoshKaulWI Trigger warning: this thread talks in general terms about horrific circumstances in which Republicans still want to ban abortion.
Wisconsin became a state in 1848. The next year, the state legislature passed a ban on abortion. Under this law, performing an abortion is a felony for which doctors could be punished up to 6 years in prison—unless necessary to save the life of the mother. docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statu… A screenshot of the WI State statute on abortion.

The Republicans have been wild in Wisconsin for a long time. But over the last few weeks, they’ve gotten even wilder—and scarier.
Two weeks ago, Wisconsin’s leading conspiracy theorist state Rep. Timothy Ramthun (aka #TrumpyTim) announced his candidacy for governor, sending the GOP primary—already reeling from Kevin Nicholson’s announcement—spiraling even further into chaos.

Thread: Wisconsin Republicans now have two candidates for governor—and, attempting to out-radical each other, they’re ripping each other apart. It’s Republicans in disarray, and it’s revealing just how politically toxic they’d be if elected. Read on for more:
Kevin Nicholson announced he’s running for Wisconsin governor. #AntiChoiceKevin is bad for Wisconsin—supporting, as our new site explains, a total ban on abortion care with no exceptions. His run for governor has sent the Wisconsin GOP spiraling.

Even before his entering the GOP primary, Nicholson made headlines statewide by slamming Kleefisch (@RebeccaForReal) as “dumb as a bag of hammers” after Kleefisch said Republicans should “hire mercenaries” to help with “ballot harvesting” to win in ‘22.

The GOP’s plot to suppress and subvert its way to power in 2022 and 2024 depends on gaining enough control of enough states to overturn a presidential election. If we hold the line in Governorships like WI, MI, and PA, the GOP plot fails. And the closest of these is Wisconsin.
In America’s must-win tipping point state, the furthest extremes of the right are becoming more emboldened. A first-year far-right state Rep was filmed calling for Republicans to “cheat.” Another GOPer introduced a bill calling for election nullification.

We’ve talked about Robin Vos and the shamtacular Michael Gableman investigation. We’ve talked about Mike Gallagher, Derrick Van Orden, and GOP members of Congress. We’ve talked about (yikes) Ron Johnson. Now it’s time for #2: Wisconsin’s Supreme Court and Partisan Gerrymandering. Image
Wisconsin’s Supreme Court is officially nonpartisan. The reality, though, is that it’s a 4-3 conservative-majority body that is, at this very moment, working to lock in Republican control of Wisconsin’s state legislature for the next decade.

Before we dig into our review of 2021, let’s set the stage—for why anyone outside Wisconsin should care about this state in the first place. Simply put: what happens in politics here shapes the course of the nation.
Wisconsin is the most evenly divided state in the country. 4 of the last 6 presidential elections have come down to less than 1%. In 2020, President Biden won WI by 20,682 votes—a 0.6% margin. In 2018, Gov Evers won by 1.1% As a result, every election here is a titanic battle.

Democracy in Wisconsin is under brutal assault with the GOP pushing to charge members of our bipartisan election commission with felonies. We’re fighting back—and the stakes couldn't be higher. Help us hit our Nov goal of 101 new monthly donors by midnight:wisdems.org/november
Republicans are trying to seize control from our state’s election commission and put the GOP-dominated Wisconsin state legislature in charge of elections. This would open a direct path to Republican politicians overturning election results they don’t like.
Republican Speaker Robin Vos says that most of the members of Wisconsin's bipartisan Elections Commission should “probably” face criminal charges.

Wisconsin GOP Gov candidate @RebeccaforReal made a divisive, fearmongering school board recall campaign a mini referendum on her viability. She knocked doors there today. It crashed and burned. Looks like Rebecca Kleefisch is just too radical for Wisconsin.
@RebeccaforReal Every one of the recall candidates that @RebeccaforReal enthusiastically backed just lost in a landslide. Which really raises the question: just how out of touch with Wisconsin parents is #RadicalRebecca Kleefisch?
When you think about the significance of the Nov 2, 2021 elections, it's really worth zeroing in on how Wisconsin Republicans, from their Gubernatorial standard-bearer @RebeccaforReal down to the county GOP, went all-in on an ugly, divisive school board recall and lost big.

Wisconsin is the closest state in the country. 4 of the last 6 presidential elections have come down to less than 1%. And it isn’t just close—it’s decisive. Wisconsin was the “tipping point” state in both 2016 & 2020. Win Wisconsin, you win the presidency.
nationalreview.com/2020/12/wiscon…
That’s why Wisconsin’s governorship is one of the most critical jobs in American politics. Re-elect a champion of democracy like @Tony4WI and we have a fighting chance to win in 2024. But if Kleefisch gets in, she’s promised to sign drastic restrictions on voting.

THREAD: Rebecca Kleefisch is running to be the GOP’s nominee for governor against @GovEvers. She says a lot. The problem? You can’t believe what she says. Her record of dishonesty makes clear that you can’t trust #RadicalRebecca. For example…
Kleefisch’s campaign launch video starts with images of fires in Kenosha a year ago. No, she’s not calling out the vigilante teen who killed two people. She’s pushing a debunked, divisive right-wing storyline—that ignores Gov Evers’ swift response:
politifact.com/factchecks/202…
And while Kleefisch has been one of the worst offenders of using Kenosha to provoke conflict, her *initial* response to the shooting of Jacob Blake actually echoed Gov Evers’ comments. Now, she’s changing her position to fit her new radical agenda.

Rebecca Kleefisch, Scott Walker’s extreme-right Lieutenant Governor, just announced her campaign for governor against Tony Evers. #RadicalRebecca is wrong for Wisconsin. Learn more at this new site, and read this thread for 10 reasons why: radicalrebecca.com
1. #RadicalRebecca is wrong for Wisconsin because she supported repealing the ACA, gutting protections for people w/ pre-existing conditions. She supported WI joining the lawsuit against the ACA, which would’ve stripped protections for 2.4m Wisconsinites.
jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
2. #RadicalRebecca is wrong for Wisconsin because @RebeccaForReal wants to make it harder for people to vote—specifically, people with disabilities, young people, people of color, and low-income Wisconsinites.
