🧵 1/4 Many of you will have seen articles recently with @wlrfm @WaterfordNS @KKPeopleNews on the future of the Barrow Bridge on the #Wexford to #Waterford rail line. @IrishRail have announced that the bridge will be pinned open due to a ship collision in Feb 2022
2/4 The bridge is an engineering marvel (almost 1/2 a mile long) that has functioned since 1906 - this video from @tidesntales gives you an idea of its scale and the opening & closing mechanism Several trains crossed the bridge in 2022 (after the accident) ImageImage
3/4 @IrishRail stated they will commence repair work on the bridge once compensation has been received from the ship's insurer. However, this has happened before. In 1991 a similar bridge strike occurred. The matter was with the High Court until 2001! A full decade! Image

1/ The earnings call season is underway and we started publishing Earnings Call Summaries last week. Coal availability is not looking good. Peabody Energy (#BTU) said they were unable to ship 23% of July month-to-date (thru Jul 28) customer nominations due to #Rail service issues
2/ As a #NaturalGas and #electricity analyst, I don’t really know what the term “customer nominations” means in the #coal business. That makes me ripe for substitution bias, which was discussed in LCMC’s January 2019 NG Research Dinner through #Tversky and #Kahneman’s work.
3/ Irrelevant detail? Here’s a counterpoint: 90% of Best Picture Academy Award (Oscar) "nominations" don't make it to the stage – context matters.

Good morning from Bangkok Railway Station. Today I’m on an excursion train to Suan Son Pradipat Beach: thaitrainguide.com/excursion-trai…

This is a live THREAD 🧵 of the day trip. Follow @ThaiTrainGuide for more photos and details.

#BKKdaytrip #thaitrain #railway #trains #Thailand #rail ImageImageImageImage
Tickets for the day excursion to the beach cost only 120 Baht in 3rd Class fan or double if you want air-con in 2nd Class. I prefer with open windows as easier to take photos. However, this time I’ve booked an inward facing seat as it gives more leg room for this 5 hour journey. Image
Breakfast on the train today is my usual. Stir-fried basil with minced pork. The cost with a fried egg was 30 Baht. Not the most generous of portions but good value for the price. Anyway, there will be more food opportunities later.

A quick 🧵 on the potential economic impact of the rail strikes.

In short, not a game-changer, but certainly another blow the UK could do without... 🙄 (1/5)

#RailStrikes
Unions must give warning, so there is some time to make alternative plans.

The series of 1-day #strikes (Tue 21, Thur 23, Sat 25) might be less disruptive than a single, prolonged stoppage, because some customers may be able to reschedule their use during the breaks... (2/5)
Some of the costs to the economy could also be reduced by ‘home working’, and by the diversion of leisure spending to other activities.

Nonetheless, there will be significant disruption to passenger traffic, and possibly to freight, including supplies of essential goods... (3/5)

So we start with the 1st line & hit the buffers as we hit the “reallocate funds fallacy”. This has been explained so many times. Cancelling #HS2 means no money for anything else. Funds raised for #HS2 can ONLY be spent on HS2 & these funds are borrowed against future use.
If there’s no HS2, there’s no funding for HS2 & no money. Also please explain how NR received an initial £48bn for CP6 back in 2019 if HS2 was “hoovering up funds”. As for value, as seen with existing lines, heavy capital costs are made back over the lengthy operational timespan
Remember that parts of today’s WCML are almost 200 years old. How many times has that paid for itself over & over & over again above its initial costs? Also, what’s with a #Green going with the austerity rhetoric?? We can’t afford not to decarbonise, at any cost, esp public spend

This is a plot of the daily reported #COVID19 (c)ases (light blue), (h)ospitalizations (light orange), and (f)atalities (light red) in #Switzerland. In addition, I plotted the cumulative numbers added up over 14 days for (c) and (f) and over 22 days for (h), corresp. dark colors.
What do we learn from the data? The second #COVID19 wave in #Switzerland has reached levels in all indicators (c,h,f) (somewhat) larger than the first wave. The peak daily reported (c)ases are a factor 8.5 times higher than in the first wave.
The peak reported (f)atalities and (h)ospitalizations per day are 1.5 and 1.25 times higher than in the first wave. Both likely have not reached their maximum yet. Also (h) data comes in with a delay of up to 7 days from the current date, while for (c) and (f) it is ~3 days.

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

There is a huge amount of false and misleading information about #HS2 on social media. Below is a myth buster thread which corrects some of the most repeated misconceptions about the project…
Myth 1: ‘HS2 only saves 20 minutes to #Birmingham’. FACT: #HS2 services will call at 25 stations in England and Scotland connecting 30 million people. It also frees up space on the existing network for more frequent stopping local services benefiting those who may never use HS2.
HS2’s budget is spread over 30 years and evens out at less than the annual roads budget. We will support 30,000 jobs at least 2,000 of which will be apprenticeships. The arrival of #HS2 is spearheading economic growth and is expected to create nearly 500,000 jobs around stations.

“HS2 is just 20 minutes quicker to #Birmingham” is a well-trodden myth. #HS2 will transform the UK with the 3Cs: More CAPACITY across the country’s #rail network. A low CARBON #transport network. Better CONNECTIVITY in the #Midlands and #North. Image
Capacity: #HS2 will add vital capacity to our overcrowded #rail network by placing long distance services on their own pair of tracks. This will create thousands of extra seats and space for more local, commuter and #freight services on the existing #railway. Image
Carbon: #Rail is the low carbon option for long distance travel, with #HS2 taking cars and lorries off the road. HS2 emits 17 times less carbon than the equivalent domestic flight and 7 times less carbon than the equivalent car journey.

🇮🇹#Italia Superspreader #Cluster THREAD 1/7🏨

Drew a #dataviz diagram based on available data* about the #Lombardy cluster, which as of EOD 2/22/20 had 54 cases, including 2 in #Milano, & still an unknown Patient 0.

*plz excuse any possible errors
2/7 This cluster has developed quite rapidly in the town of #Lodi, near #Milan, in the #Lombardy region of #Italy.

The story has shifted several times on Patient 0, but somehow Patient 1 - a 38 y/o male in Lodi - contracted the #COVID19 virus.

When Patient 1 had symptoms...
3/7 ...he went to the #ER at the local Codogno #hospital multiple X, but was sent home with only #antibiotics (which don't work on #COVID19italia)

He then infected his pregnant wife & friends.

Of the 1st group of ~6, all were in serious condition.

With the #UKCoordinationGroup & #EPlenary about to adopt a resolution on the EU-UK future relationship, here are some elements which would be of great help to integrated supply chains & logistics on both sides of the border @davidmcallister @berndlange @CHansenEU @EP_Trade 1/
1. 1st, a #transport agreement is an absolute must @davidmcallister @berndlange @CHansenEU @KarimaDelli : without an agreement, there is no fallback to allow traffic by road, rail & air freight to continue. Without it, planes won't fly & a very small number of EU & UK vehicles 2/
(trucks & vans) cld ever cross the border relying on a very limited number of ECMT permits (wouldn't even cover 5% of the traffic). The situation is just as serious for the island of Ireland since #transport is not dealt with in the Protocol part of the withdrawal agreement 3/

BJP's failure in winning 'intellectual' debate became most apparent in #CAA. Reason lies with party. I worked in this space 4 too long to kno how long term agendas are set. Why intellectualism is equated to #Left leaning among a section in #WestBangal & #India. 1/n
I have been consistent in saying that #CAA is a major correction to the historic neglect to human tragedies from sustained flight of #Hindu & other minority from #EastPakistan/#Bangladesh. It's unfinished job of #Partition. 2/n
#Secularism will be threatened only when #India wil institutionally discriminate between two sets of citizens, as it happened in #Pakistan & #Bangladesh not by virtue of giving citizenship 2 d discriminated/persecuted in this 2 countries born out of discriminatory principles. 3/n

The main users of railways are commuters, who are relatively well-off and most likely live or work in London and the South East. So cutting #railfares by 1/3 would increase both income #inequality and regional inequality.

(snips from factsheets here: gov.uk/government/sta…)
To be fair, distributional impact also depends on how lower #rail fares are funded. Higher taxes on car ownership and/or use might even the impact out a little, and could be better for the environment, but plenty of poorer people rely on cars too.
Finally, remember any environmental benefits rely on more people travelling on trains which are already overcrowded. Much better to use the money to improve infrastructure than cut #railfares, especially as users themselves will benefit from this too.

By putting direct inter-city services on dedicated high speed lines, #HS2 will allow more #train services to run on 3 of the country’s most heavily congested rail routes; West Coast Main Line, East Coast Main Line and Midland Main Line (1/3) Map showing the HS2 route and the resulting capacity released on the West Coast, East Coast and Midland mainlines.
This presents a once in a generation opportunity to improve services on these routes, including passenger services to locations not directly served by #HS2. This will help reduce overcrowding by offering more seats for more passengers on more trains across the country (2/3) Graphic showing how commuter seats leaving Manchester Piccadilly in rush hour will increase from 3,490 to 8,620 and Leeds from 1,720 to 4,860.
By freeing up capacity on our current #railways, #HS2 will help take hundreds of lorries off the roads every day as more freight can move to #rail. This will create more space for drivers on our motorways, make road journeys safer and help the fight against #climatechange (3/3) Motorway busy with traffic and Heavy Goods Vehicles.
