The "white man" still thinks India is a land of snake charmers & statues . Cannot blame the uninformed, this calls for a thread on what #India has built over the last decade alone .
#infrastructureIndia begins below.
#Kaaleshwaram the world's largest lift irrigation project .
1800km of canals , 240 TMC of water for irrigation , 18,25,000 acre ft irrigated .

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

Normally when I go for disused railway walks, I don't need wellies and sailing clothes...

History Thread to follow 👇👇

In 1982, The Volks Electric Railway had been extended as far as Paston Place. Owner Magnus Volks next wanted to extend to Rottingdean.
The three mile extension would need either a steep climb to take it along the cliff top or a man-made viaduct along the unstable undercliff...
Magnus Volk knew a different solution was needed. He took inspiration from a system in St. Malo harbour in Brittany. However, this was pulled along the rails by chain rather than being self-propelled and ran through sheltered water, not the English Channel.

I just got on the @rzd_official No. 2 train from #moscow to #vladivostok. This #transsiberian route is over 9200km, the longest single train ride in the world. It will take 6 days and change in one direction. THREAD (I’ll add throughout the journey): Image
Tonight we will stop in Vladimir in the night and be in Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga before sunrise. My coupe while not fancy is certainly comfortable. We are passing through the Moscow suburbs. It’s midnight. That’s a full commuter train we just whizzed by. Image
This is my coupe. There is a mini TV (peak Russia) and a plug to charge phones in the hallway. Haven’t dared ask the shower question yet as not all trains have them. The lady in charge of our “wagon” is very nice and will go all the way to Vladivostok (and back!). Shared WCs. Image

Used the #Addis-#Djibouti #Railway for the first time yesterday - it was a pleasant ride. The 8 hour journey started at Lebu Furi Station at 7am and arrived in Dire Dawa at 3pm. A visual thread of the the experience below!
Having bought my ticket at the ticket office, and water from the vendor outside, I waited in the station itself for the train. The station was well equipped.
Boarding was smooth, not too many people around this early on a Monday.

Just a very short thread on #StrengtheningInstitutions in Nigeria:
You have heard this over and over "let us allow strong institution, not strong individuals"...
I put it to you that that fallacy will never work anywhere in the world.
Only Strong men can FIX institutions. 👇👇
Make no mistake, only #StrongMen can build #StrongInstitutions that will eventually run as though AUTOPILOT. #StrongInstitutions don't happen in isolation anywhere in the world....
Gen 2:5 said something very instructive on how God made things to work here on planet earth...👇
Gen 2:5 (NLT)
neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the LORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no PEOPLE TO CULTIVATE THE SOIL.

#StrongInstitutions "Soil" will never CULTIVATE itself & become strong suddenly if there's no MAN!
