A lot has been made about the #Rams "soft" zone coverage & how it has led to struggles in the 1st half of the season

Let's take a look...

#ArtofX x #NFL
First, let's put some context to this:

The #Rams are a Cover 3 based defense

They run a variation of Cover 3 on about 59% of their snaps

Cover 3, played w/ ZN CBs can leave a defense susceptible to underneath throws, especially to the outside flats

#ArtofX x #NFL ⤵️
In reality, the #Rams' D is not playing *that* poorly

@fboutsiders has them w/ a DVOA that ranks 13th overall, 4th against the run, & 19th against the pass

According to @espn, LAR is 3rd in Pass rush win rate

👉🏻 So, yes, coverage *is* the issue

#ArtofX x #NFL ⤵️

A couple of years ago I published a weekly matchups thread with charts for each game, and this year I'm bringing it back! While I'll normally share on Thursdays, I'm so excited for Week 1 to start that I'm sharing this week's today!

Let's have a great season, everyone! 🏈
Before I start, here's a description of the 3 charts:
1. Comparing OFF vs. DEF key stat rankings
2. Player distribution of 2021/22 DK points
3. Player % of team rushing/receiving expected fpts

In addition to these charts, I'll also include one stat nugget relevant to that game!
#Bills @ #Rams (+2.5)
Game total: 52
BUF implied team total: 27.25
LA implied team total: 24.75
Key stat: Buffalo's defensive pass EPA/play went from -0.112 (2nd) with Tre'Davious White (weeks 1-12) to 0.035 (15th) without him (weeks 13-20). He's out Thursday night.

That was very nearly the worst #NFL collapse I have ever seen. It is ABSURD that the #Rams made such hard work of that - and you know why? It's because McVay stopped playing.

I've lost count of how many head coaches give the opposition life by running the ball, very badly.
The Rams' pass offense was what got them so far ahead... then they stop throwing the ball? Ridiculous.

And just look what happened when they HAD to throw it right at the end.

Just nonsense coaching: which almost threw the whole team under a bus. #BucsRams #LARvsTB #NFLPlayoffs
Trust in #Stafford, for Christ's sake. He barely put a foot wrong out there. Unlike McVay and Akers.

The Rams have as close to an all-star team as it gets in the free agency era. It shouldn't be possible to come so close to messing it all up like that.

The NFL and NFL Players Association are in active discussions about postponing multiple Week 15 games in light of recent COVID cases, per sources.

Similar circumstances to delays in 2020, with new cases still emerging with #Browns, #Rams, #WFT.
The NFL has made clear the past two seasons it won’t postpone games for competitive reasons (e.g. the #Broncos playing with no QBs, etc.). But it did reschedule several games last season in cases where there was evidence of ongoing COVID spread. This would be a medical decision.
A notable dynamic: Sources say the NFLPA has received feedback that a majority of players want to eliminate COVID protocols altogether. No more testing, quarantining, etc. That sentiment isn’t shared by union leadership, which has continued to advocate for daily testing.

** Post Week 10 // Pre-Week 11 Thought Dump **

Coming off another wild week of upsets.

Among NFL best records:

8-2 #Titans have lost to 2-7 #Jets
7-2 #Cowboys to 5-5 #Broncos
7-3 #Rams to 4-5 #49ers
6-3 #Bills to 2-7 #Jaguars
6-3 #Bucs to 3-6 #WFT
6-3 #Ravens to 3-7 #Dolphins
Random Takes & Notes:

- Standing by Rhamondre Stevenson as #Patriots best RB with Wk 10 as confirmation bias
- Rashod Bateman hasn’t hurt Marquise Brown whatsoever; The Real Hollywood Avging 13 targets since Bateman’s return
- Jeff Wilson SZN if Eli Mitchell (finger) sits v Jags
- Josh Allen used play action on 57% of Week 10 drops — nearly 2x the highest rate of any team all last year. He destroyed, of course
- #Bills backfield has devolved into 3-way RBBC. Avoid
- Long as #Bears keep letting Justin Fields run, he’ll produce. Back2Back top-10 FF starts

Another thought dump rather than
Position-by-Position Rundown. Feel this format may be less organized but more efficient.
* Justin Fields Dream is officially dead
* Sounds strange but Allen Rob’s best hope = Andy Dalton
* Painful but still buying low on Cal Ridley as long as he keeps getting 10 tgts/game. Bye also out of way
* Somehow, ARodgers has been *better* in box score w/o DAdams last 3 years
* Tonyan & RCobb looking like must-starts on TNF as Covid wipes out #Packers top pass catchers
* Jalen Hurts drafters need a QB2 handy as benching rumors heat up. Suggestion: Danny Dimes
* Tyler Higbee peripheral usage screams buy buy buy. #Rams featuring him in scoring position

🚑 Week 2 Injury Thread 🚑

Full write up Tuesday with @TheFFBallers

My quick, concise thoughts on each injury + what we know now 👇
#49ers RB situation:

Trey Sermon: in concussion protocol

Elijah Mitchell: R shoulder injury, team believes is a "stinger type injury"; MRI tomorrow

Ja'Mycal Hasty: Ankle injury, to be evaluated more tomorrow. Severity currently unknown
#Browns Baker Mayfield

L shoulder dislocation: Returned to the game and was effective. Will be fine moving forward but is likely to require offseason labral repair surgery. If this was his R shoulder, he'd be done for the year

Brady is the best football player in the modern Era if you control for racism, coaching and division competition. Doesn't mean he's not the greatest but context matters
The #GOAT conversation depends on how you think of individual vs team sports. Football is HARD - a long career of success is almost impossible. But Basketball requires you play offense AND defense (unless you're Harden) so I'd put LeBron, Russell, Jordan ahead of #Brady
Easily 3 of #Brady #SuperBowl wins were
defense #seahawks
Special Teams #Rams 2000
Defense #Rams 2018

LeBron, Jordan, Russell had to be on the court the whole time. Again doesn't take anything AWAY from #Brady but a "Team sport" hits different when you have to defend too

The Stafford trade is so monumentally dumb for the #Rams on every level that I am astounded at how many people are outsmarting themselves trying to make it seem shrewd.
I mean, I get how well "I understand Matthew Stafford on deeper levels than you" plays #OnHere. He's damaged goods on the downside of his career. The Rams traded extreme draft capital and are eating cap $$ they don't have to get him. It's a disaster.
The #Rams are going to lose Leonard Floyd and others to free agency. Don't know how they even afford the Darious Williams tender offer. And they lack the draft picks to upgrade. They just attached an anchor to a sinking team.

I was pretty bored w/ the #NFC playoffs this year because once #Seahawks and (ahem) Goff / #rams were out, there really weren't any amazing stories to tell because almost nobody's legacy is going to change going forward, now #BucsvsSaints almost gaurantees it
If Rogers makes another SB so what? He's already a top 5 QB all time. Even if he somehow BEAT the #Chiefs (and that won't happen) who's he going to leap over on #NFL QB Mount Rushmore? Nobody. Another ring changes nothing for him
If Brady wins on the road in Green Bay and makes a 10th #SuperBowl what does that make him? The GOAT + 1? I mean, he's already the most successful QB ever. Another appearance or even beating the #Chiefs (Won't happen) doesn't change his legacy either

1/ Let's talk predictions for fintech in 2021

In 2021 fintechs will need to innovate on their go-to-market strategies as much as they do on their products:

I discuss how offline is back + physical advertising 🏬 + gaming/sports partnerships 🏀🎮 & creators as distribution 👇
2/ First here's the the link to our @a16z fintech team's post on where the big ideas we think Fintech will tackle in 2021

Now let's dive in on these go-to-market trends 🤿

3/ In consumer fintech acquiring users has not changed in years - it's all about online paid advertising

But paid online CACs are relatively high - & it's anecdotal -but from what I've seen have continued to 📈 as incumbents + wave of 🆕 fintechs start to saturate these channels

Instant Round 2 Grades! Here we go! #NFLDraft2020

Starting with...
33. CIN - Tee Higgins WR9 ... C

My 44th overall player, I think there are better values & better WRs available.

I also would've gone OT here, unless an AJ Green trade is imminent.

Building around Burrow is a good move, though. #Bengals
34. IND - Michael Pittman Jr. WR12 ... D

I'm lower than many on Pittman - 53rd - I just think there are much better prospects at WR. Multiple are still on the board: Laviska 21st, Mims 36th, Edwards 43rd.

Also, not the route I would've gone here with such a valuable pick.

Quick thread on the Wade Phillips departure with the #Rams...
1. Wade suspected the writing was on the wall when the team parted company with DL coach (and Phillips confidant) Bill Johnson last offseason. There were some indications the defensive staff was going to get younger and more scheme-driven under McVay moving forward.
2. From the team perspective, I think there was some frustration over relying on the fundamentals of playing sound football rather than a premium placed on scheming and changing looks to expose weaknesses. Too much reliance on just beating strength on strength.

🚨🚨🚨MONTGOMERY THREAD🚨🚨🚨

Many #Bears fans may be wondering why Ryan Pace traded up for David Montgomery when Darrell Henderson could’ve been had by trading up just 3 picks earlier.
The answer: Montgomery’s skillset is a much better fit for Matt Nagy’s run scheme. Ditto Henderson for Sean McVay’s #Rams.

McVay uses outside zone-centric approach, which allows RBs with great long speed who can make guys miss in the open field shine, as Todd Gurley can attest.
It works because it gives guys who may not have great short area quickness time and space to build up their speed and blow by defenders, who are moving laterally and not upfield so they won’t get walled off. Henderson thrived in college with this approach.
