Commonly used drug for acidity #Ranitidine may increase the risk of #cancers

1. Ranitidine (sold under the brand name Rantac, zinetac, aciloc) is commonly used for treating acidity. Analysis of ranitidine samples has shown contamination by a chemical NDMA (nitrosodimethylamine)
2. Ranitidine use caused higher incidence of pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas and colorectal cancers. Ref: Cancers (Basel), Jan 2021
3. USFDA banned ranitidine in April 2020. In India, it is not banned, but was removed from National list of essential medicines in Sep
Conclusion: It is better to avoid use of ranitidine for treating acidity due to a higher risk of gastro-intestinal cancers with its intake.

Doctors of all people, MUST NOT scare monger #ranitidine

Dropping from 'essential list' DOES NOT mean it is banned

It can be used and is still in use

'CERTAIN' manufacturer's Ranitidine products were found contaminated with NDMA - a potential...
..cancer causing agent.

US FDA has been investigating this since 2019.

In fact, a study done by the US FDA on conversion of ranitidine into significant NMDA under normal physiology conditions showed that it did not change for worse.

There is NO EVIDENCE that Ranitidine use...
..can cause cancer or HAS caused cancer in humans till now.

Certain batches of OTHER drugs too - like Metformin and Losartan were also found to have NDMA impurity - this DOES NOT mean cancers are caused by use of these drugs

Following ZHL, Hetero is learnt to have changed the manufacturing process for valsartan API. Since it meant fewer stages of manufacturing, it more or less became an industry norm to adapt to a new way to cut costs; being ahead in the market competition was a priority
ZHP was reported to have used sodium azide, which leads to higher yields as compared to tributyltin azide, that was used by Sandoz. However, what was unclear was the use of solvent dimethylformamide may lead to carcinogens, though in small quantities. Some chemistry..
