Dear #Corporations -

While we appreciate your well intentioned gesture to cut off the flow of money to #Seditionists who tried to thwart the will of the People by refusing to certify valid vote counts, it's not enough. 1/13
Because nothing stops you from funding their challengers in the next cycle. And that does nothing to stop the corruption of our body politic.

What we need is for you to #CloseYourCheckbook and get out of the politics business. 2/13
You cannot claim to value #democracy while you devalue its purpose to represent the people. And I hate to be the one to tell you this but in spite of what @MittRomney said, corporations are not people. I'll believe they are when Texas executes one. 3/13

If you feel like our politics are more polarized than ever before, or if it seems impossible to engage in cross-partisan dialogue, there’s a reason for it.

A thread...
Check out the report we released today on #MonopolyPolitics: The Root of Dysfunction in the U.S House of Representatives bit.ly/2KDSYlp
Back in 2018, FairVote guessed the outcome of 82% of races in 2020 two full years ahead of election day and we were accurate within a percentage point. Why? Because only 18% of House races are actually competitive.

We need to talk about just how corrupt we've allowed #democracy in #America to become, to the point it isn't democracy in many respects. And we need to stop #partisan squabbling and get to fixing it before we end up a one-party state, like #China. Thread👇

In 2019, writing the decision for Common Cause v. Rucho, Chief Justice Roberts closed off the federal courts as an avenue for addressing partisan #gerrymandering, instead telling citizens to propose state constitutional amendments.
In many states, with statehouses #gerrymandered beyond reach of the people, or otherwise beholden to special interests, these citizen-amendments are the only avenue left for addressing #democracy reform and other policy concerns.

The #TwoPartyDuopoly has worked together for decades to erect a mighty #FortressOfProtection. The #2020Election may be an unprecedented opportunity to break right through it.

This is our original depiction of the duopoly's fortress. The first slide shows the structural barriers (exclusionary debates being one of those). The second slide shows how these concrete barriers are reinforced by various barriers of perception. 2/ The Problem: Two-Party Duopoly protected by a fortress it haThe Problem: The fortress is reinforced by barriers of perce
It's hard to argue which type of barrier is stronger, & the reality is they are mutually reinforcing. When the media goes along with a phony narrative that the CPD is a legitimate institution working in the public interest, that has a powerful impact on perceptions. 3/

.@TheDemocrats removal of @GreenPartyUS presidential/vice-presidential candidates Howie Hawkins & Angela Walker from #Wisconsin & #Pennsylvania is based on incorrect assumption that Green Party voters will automatically check warmongers @JoeBiden & @KamalaHarris. People will
1) Write in Howie & Angela, which is what I'm doing in #Georgia
2) Simply not vote for president, while voting in other races
3) Not voting at all
4) Voting for a different candidate

Only thing Democrats accomplished is to prove that their top priority is restricting discourse
to policies upholding Wall St & empire.

If any Democrats & Republicans want to prove me wrong, please go ahead and vote for policies which remove ballot access restrictions & implement #RankedChoiceVoting & include multiple parties in public election financing & debates.

🔥 #BRAMYIR stands for Balanced Ranked Approval Maximum Yield Instant Runoff. It's a powerful and easy to use hybrid voting system which allows votes directly for or directly against any number of competing candidates. For more details, please continue reading… 🐦
#BRAMYIR offers the benefits of #ApprovalVoting, #ScoreVoting, & #RankedChoiceVoting, plus the benefit of a balanced ballot, while encouraging honest voting & discouraging attempts to game the system with dishonest strategic voting such as votes for the mere lesser of two evils.
#BRAMYIR is similar to #StarVoting in that it is calculated using scores rather than ranks and looks at all scores in the first round, but unlike #StarVoting this process is repeated with the remaining candidates for as many rounds as it takes.

People who claim that #RankedChoiceVoting is too confusing to implement don't seem to care that in many complicated transactions of everyday life, individuals are pitted against corporations & the governments they own.

The elderly have to navigate "Medicare Advantage" plans.
Renters have to navigate contracts with landlords.

Pension fund managers of unions & municipalities are hearing pitches from hedge fund managers.

You are shopping in the grocery store & the only info, for the most part, you have on the products is companies advertising.
You buy a house & it turns out that environmental changes elsewhere are going 2 eventually cause your property to be in a flood plain.

You are supposed to figure out which health insurance plan best meets the medicines you need.

In all of these things & more, it's #caveatemptor

Everyone’s talking about Maine, the state that will be making history this November with the first use of #RankedChoiceVoting for a presidential election. As with all things, there is a lot moving very quickly, so let’s dip our toes…
Background: After voting to enact ranked choice voting three times in four years, voters in Maine will now have the opportunity to rank presidential candidates in order of preference. This freedom was hard-won, and the fight is far from over. BUT...
Systematic changes to how our elections function don’t start in the voting booth, they start with the campaigns candidates run when RCV is at play. Time and time again we see that when RCV is available, candidates run more positive, issue-driven campaigns.

#BIRNY stands for Balanced Instant Runoff Normalized Yield. It's easy to use & more powerful than #ApprovalVoting, #ScoreVoting & #RankedChoiceVoting, combined. #Birny also allows voting directly for or directly against any number of competing candidates. Continue reading…
#BIRNY is a variant of #BRIRES with simple normalization preserving the relative strengths of votes for or against candidates as indicated by the voter. A voter may choose their own scale or vote ranked choice style using fractions or using a balanced ranked choice voting ballot.
#BRIRES stands for Balanced Rational Instant Runoff Election Systems, and allows the voter to choose ballot style such as #ScoreVoting, #ApprovalVoting, or #RankedChoiceVoting, and also allows voters the option of using a #BalancedBallot to cast a true #NegativeVote. #BIRNY

A #BRIRE system includes the powers of #ScoreVoting, #ApprovalVoting, #RankedChoiceVoting & more, with balance built-in allowing voters an option of using a #BalancedBallot to cast a true #NegativeVote if they choose a ballot which includes that option. Continue reading… #BRIRES
#BRIRES EXPLAINED: A Balanced Rational Instant Runoff Election System (#BRIRES) is much more powerful than the USA's out-dated first-past-the-post system and allows voters to choose a simple ballot to be automatically converted or a #BRIRE ballot to access the full potential.
Using a computer system to vote with a simpler ballot such as one the voter is accustomed to, they could choose to view the calculated translation of their simple ballot into a full #BRIRE ballot and optionally edit it before printing or submitting the final ballot. #BRIRES

Ranked Choice Voting means you can vote for the candidate you like most without fearing the "spoiler effect".

It also ensures candidates need to have *majority support* to win elections.

It's gaining momentum across the country - here's how it works.

#rankedchoicevoting Image
It’s essential for our democracy that we elect candidates that a majority of voters support. Ranked Choice Voting will help fix our broken elections. Image

I’m a virologist & concerned voter. COVID endangers elections, yet might civilize American election campaigns in. Bottom line: At-home voting has unintended consequences (wasted votes) solvable w/ #RankedChoiceVoting (RCV), which civilizes politics. Like game theory? Read on...
To avoid crowding at polling stations during pandemic, 6 states adopted 100% at-home voting (WA, OR, UT, CO, HI, & CA phasing it in). Great idea. If people must vote in person, then prudent citizens will stay home & others will risk infection. Bad for democracy & public health.
At-home voting is good even absent a pandemic. It increases voter participation; people who can’t get away from work or are home-bound are still able to vote. And it’s easier. More people voting is good for democracy. Covid is just accelerating us towards a rational goal.

Those who want a new party, please read this thread.

We are all in agreement that we need a new party.

But, I want to establish there are only two ways a new party can succeed:

1) Everyone switches at once as they did in 1855.

2) #RankedChoiceVoting

Important: (continued)
Our system of 1-choice (binary) voting has the fatal flaw of vote splitting. This flaw is why 3rd parties can't be grown in the US.

This chart demonstrate how vote splitting is a powerful effect that kills 3rd parties.

It is critical to our success that everyone understand.
Our current system of 1-choice voting is being leveraged to keep the duopoly afloat. Lesser-evil strategy allows Dems/Reps to be maximally corrupt. If they were a little more corrupt, they would lose.
That is why every general election is near 50%. This is not a coincidence.

People who think that @BernieSanders gets us closer to @AndrewYang's vision for America don't actually understand Yang's vision for America: A Thread

#YangGang #EndorseUBI
#Bernie2020 #NotMeUs

(1/16)
First of all, #Yang wants a unified America. One where there isn't a huge political divide and so much hate and conflict. He doesn't alienate anyone.

#Bernie is incredibly divisive and angry and will only cause tensions to rise if given the nomination or the presidency.

(2/16)
The #FederalJobsGuarantee goes against Yang's vision because #Yang wants to redefine work in an age where jobs are being automated away and where work that has intrinsic human value isn't being recognized by the market.

For week 1 of my Network Epistemology class we looked at the classic "Wisdom of the Crowds" results. The basic idea is that (sometimes!) groups can be far more intelligent than any of their individual members.
The first paper is by List and Goodin who look at variations on the classic Condorcet Jury Theorem (CJT).

CJT says that, under the right conditions, when given a choice between two options a group will be far better than any of it members.

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
List and Goodin look at how different voting rules (like #RankedChoiceVoting) would fare according to the CJT with more than two options. They argue that there isn't much of a difference between different voting rules in this framework, that many of them are very similar.

I'll be on @FoxNews tonight at 8pm ET talking about @HowardSchultz & the Democratic Party establishment's treatment of independent candidates & voters. If you don’t like Fox, please let @CNN, @MSNBC & your favorite channel know I'll talk with them anytime. :)
I don't support @HowardSchultz. What I do support is voters' right to have a full say in our democracy. Don't like a system where someone can “split the vote”? Support the movement for Ranked Choice Voting, which lets you vote FOR what you want instead of AGAINST what you fear.
Americans want more choices, not less. Choice is not the enemy of a fair voting system - it's essential for it. That's why Ranked Choice Voting is the medicine that our ailing democracy so urgently needs. Who doesn't want the freedom to vote for what you actually want?

@nabuccodenazzar @tinybaby Trump's a fascist. He incessantly and gleefully lies, scapegoats, plays to racial animus, assaults rule of law. He is antagonistic to all norms and institutions except when personally benefitting him. He could have worthy goals, but does not care for our democratic republic.
@nabuccodenazzar @tinybaby You could cite other politicians who do some of these things, but not ALL of these things, in one ugly package. I'm not saying he's 100% wrong about everything, but he is clearly unfit and a demagogue. He did not expect to win, yet his response is to abuse the office daily.
@nabuccodenazzar @tinybaby This abuse of the presidency requires a forceful response from the public. His actions and rhetoric fit the pattern of fascism. He stokes racial division intentionally. He calls unfavorable media "the enemy of the people". He denies the legitimacy of every legal inquiry.

What if I told you that America can never have a viable 3rd party, because our system of binary voting doesn't allow it?

You would probably not believe me, because nobody has said that for 240 years.

Doesn't that seem like a big deal?
Ever notice how in every election, the vote is almost even between Democrats and Republicans, and 3rd parties get 2%?

Would you be surprised if I told you that result is predictable by game theory and will stay the same no matter who runs, because of binary voting?
Would you be concerned to learn that binary voting ensures that there are just two parties and that those two parties are guaranteed to be corrupt?

Not "they could be corrupt when led by the wrong people", but "they will be corrupt no matter what".
