Miami in summer. White bodies sunning on the beach to become brown bodies. Lots of brown bodies too: Cubans, Latinos, Mexicans, Haitians and Jamaicans. Proper melting pot, is Miami. Something or the other happening, always, non-stop. 1/21
What is happening right now is the National Chilli Eating Contest. The 5-member jazz band is going full steam, three of whom are blacks. The 5-member cheer leader group is also going full steam, all of them white girls, in miniskirts. 2/21

A BAD STORY
1/n
Driving out of Delhi, Madan noticed traffic was light on the highway. Though the #pandemic was receding, it’s impact was still discernable in many things. Like the almost empty roads. He was driving the new compact SUV 2/n
as their driver had returned to his hometown down south to wait out the pandemic. Madan would have been happier if his wife was not sitting beside him. He scowled at Anita’s side profile. 3/n

AN OPEN LETTER #HELP #Editor #Director
We are living in traumatic times but the #Covid19 hasn’t just had terrible consequences for humans there is also the consequences to our #Pets in the U.K. in particular in relation to the thousands of missing and stolen #Pets in the U.K.
I am one of thousands of #Volunteers who help via Social Media to reunite Found Pets and raise awareness of the #Missing and #Stolen. In the last month 170 Pets have been reported missing or stolen and that is just on one U.K. database #DogLostUK.
As Volunteers working 24/7 we alert groups around the U.K. There are groups for specific areas for Missing and Stolen Pets, there are groups for specific areas for Found Pets. There are also National Groups for Missing, Stolen and Found. There are groups set up by Volunteers

HOW TO BE A #POET
by #WendellBerry
(to remind myself)

Make a place to sit down.
Sit down. Be #quiet.
You must depend upon
#affection, reading, knowledge,
skill — more of each
than you have — #inspiration,
work, growing older, patience,
for #patience joins time
to eternity.

the unconditioned air.

Shun electric wire.

#Communicate slowly.

#Live a three-dimensioned life;

stay away from screens.

#Readers who justify #bookpiracy because THEY are poor i.e can buy the latest tech, fashions, daily coffees but cannot 'afford' books, we need to have a talk, and #RealityCheck ...
1. Those who download from #pirate sites wouldn't buy the book anyway.

To justify theft by saying that the thief wouldn't pay for what they stole is ridiculous. Clearly, they wanted the product but didn't think it was 'worth' $4 because they can steal it without consequences.
2. Authors earn lots of money, they're just being greedy.

In the latest @ALCS_UK research "“The median annual income of a professional author is £10,500 (US$11,300), which is well below the minimum wage."

1% of authors earn huge sums, most of us barely scrape a living.

I have cited AO3's taxonomy and archiving systems as models at academic linguistics conferences because they are IMPRESSIVE as usable, durable, well-designed systems, and frankly academia could stand to learn from fandom here
Here's an example: rights transfer and orphaning

Academic archives are patchy when the original depositor of the data dies or doesn't want to be responsible for it anymore. AO3 has a whole system in place to transfer fic to another user or leave it up without your name attached
I was literally at a conference a few years ago when an academic was like "oh yeah we just don't know how to deal with rights transfer at our archive" and I pulled up AO3's orphaning policy as a model

1/ #THREAD Ah, teeny tiny demographical instance of something, hastily wound up to a coy, careful kind of un-endorsement of something else, even uses paper in a medical / scientific journal to try substantiate this un-endorsement placement #Beware #BullAtWork How 'well-connected'
