I celebrate Autism Acceptance Month because most people are already aware of autism, but they don’t accept autism and people who are autistic like me. Happy #AutismAcceptanceMonth to all my fellow autistics! #Autism #ActuallyAutistic 🧵1/3
Remember non-autistics: don’t support A$ (Autism Speaks) and the puzzle piece and light it up blue because they are triggering to me and other autistic people. #AutismAcceptanceMonth #autism #ActuallyAutistic 2/3
Please wear #redinstead and support organizations run by autistic people like @awnnetwork_ and use the infinity symbol ♾️ #AutismAcceptanceMonth #autism #ActuallyAutistic 3/3

Hi everyone! You might remember last year’s Asperger’s comic. This year i bring to you an extension, to dive deeper into a term that still has an impact today. TW: Nazism, Holocaust, Ableism. (1/6)

Its very necessary to put certain things into context and not judge them anachronistically, that way we can understand why it impacted others the way it did. (2/6)

By going back in time and understanding the environment, we also get a download of information of its surroundings and how everything interacted and evolved throughout time. (3/6)

I'm willing to wager that I'm not the only Autistic that's feeling increased anxiety levels as April approaches.

Autism Acceptance Month is a wild ride. And here's some reasons why: 🧵
1) Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month was not created for Autistics. It was a day, week, month, whatever that was originally designed by and for those who "speak for" Autistics.

It's a whole month during which Autistics have to fight to have our own experiences centered.
2) The puzzle piece is everywhere, and Autistics are expected to be happy about it!

The puzzle piece is the infantile symbol originally used by Autism Speaks, a problematic organization that paints Autism as a tragedy. Many Autistics don't relate to the idea that we're a puzzle.

I debated if I should do something like this for today and it's kinda like... why not. So anyways, a thread.

Hi. I'm Adam, though online people sometimes call me "Moofey." I'm a 36 year old male from the Vancouver area.
Currently, I live by myself smack dab in the middle of suburban Vancouver, and I work full time. I enjoy gaming, (I built my own PC even) as well as cycling, sports, motor racing, and taking nice photos.

Now, I'm about to throw a wrench into all of that:

I'm autistic.
Now that I've mentioned that I'm autistic, how do you see everything else that I've said so far?

"Oh, you can't be autistic enough. You live alone and you have a full time job."

My normal-looking life doesn't really match the description of an autistic person, does it?

#LightItUpBlue Means passive awareness and acceptance of the way Autistic people are marginalized

#RedInstead means being passionate, even angry, about the lack of #AutismAcceptance and fighting against the status quo!

Boycott the people who refuse to center Autistic voices at the design/planning phase and through their projects!

Support #ActuallyAutistic to gain control over #Autism narratives and support structures!
The rest of this thread is dedicated to things people need to know about Autistic people but the #Autism charities don't talk about!

If any of these are unknown you haven't been paying enough attention to #ActuallyAutistic

Kicking off the #ASDComicTakeover with a comic about conversational scripting and masking! Conversation doesn't come naturally to me At All so I've had to learn a bunch of strategies to help me with them. Let's talk about some of them! ✨ (1/3)

April is just a week away, which means autistic people everywhere are bracing ourselves for what is known in non-autistic circles as “Autism Awareness Month.”

Here are some things you should know before all of that starts, and misinformation/propaganda start being spread:
1. Autism Speaks (AS or A$) is a corporate, eugenicist group that has done immense harm to autistic people.

They are widely viewed as a hate group by autistic people.

Do not give them your money, no matter how convincing you think their rebranding is. It’s all fake.
2. Autism is not a disease or a tragedy.

It’s a lifelong, genetic developmental disability. And it is also one of many ways of being in this world.

A$ and similar groups will try to profit by manufacturing fear and grief. Don’t fall for their lies.

My goal this April is to wear something relating to autism acceptance everyday - primarily with the slogans Light it Up Gold and Red Instead. I can't buy enough shirts to wear one everyday, so I'm thinking picking up a pin or two is a good idea (plus ordered some masks today)
I did open back up my #RedInstead bonfire campaign if anyone wanted an Autistic & Cute shirt to wear next month. ☺️

It comes mostly in shades of red, but there are a few other colors.

I'm thinking about making a Light It Up Gold shirt this year too...
