1. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19?

During this #COVID I am going to create a rolling thread about key issues and articles of interest, just so as you can see the evolution toward a return to normality in 2022, 2023, 2024 or 2025; according to predictions by #Aviation!
2. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19?

Interesting article about #staycations and their price!!

The attitude of some UK h/makers, is I'm afraid, a common feature found in holidays abroad. I've heard many a tale about the Master vs Serf behaviour of some Brits! independent.co.uk/voices/holiday…
3. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19?

It's not done with us yet:

"...hard to anticipate what the timeline will be for the expected shift of COVID-19 to endemicity..."

Hot stuff! Thermal #drone surveys can be used to determine & monitor the abundance of #FlyingFox camps. …lpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/rs… #bats @Wingtags @batslab @ElieDoesEcology
These #FruitBats are on the @IUCN #redlist, & while the attached looks like a firework display, it’s actually a roosting colony of #flyingfoxes. Image
Check out this incredible #drone video showing heat detections over #FlyingFox roosts. #ThermalDrone @batslab @Wingtags @ElieDoesEcology

This #weekend when you’re off to see your #family, hugging parent(s), having a pint with mates, pls spare a thought for hundreds of foreign #NHS doctors who’ve no family in the UK & are desperate to go home to see their parents/loved ones after 18 months of working non stop 1/n
This includes me, too. I haven’t seen my parents since Jan ‘20. This is the longest I’ve gone without seeing them. Even when living in Aus 🇦🇺 I used to fly home at least x2/year. We are a v close family and this has been the toughest thing to endure for all of us 2/n
It is incredibly difficult to hide your emotions on a video call when you see your parents getting older (comes as a shock every few weeks) & when they ask you ‘just come home we miss you’. You need to be strong for them and yourself and hv an ugly cry after hanging up 3/n

David is staying at the Reading Pentahotel on 10 days RedList Quarantine...
They are charging him £1750, even though their standard room price is £54 per night (=£650).
Here is the food he is getting.
(I made a thread since he's tweeted seperately)

1/5 Dear @susannareid100 & @adilray & @gmb, millions of school children, families & teachers across the country urgently need your help.
Masks are no longer required leaving pupils & 1000s of unvaccinated/partially vaccinated adults <40 vulnerable to #COVID19 & #LongCovid.
2/ W/ case numbers of the #IndianVariant ⬆️ sharply in many parts of the UK, I’m utterly mystified that we’re allowing so many young ppl & children to be exposed to #coronavirus every day they’re in school.

We don’t know enough about this #COVIDVariant yet to be so reckless.
3/ Just like the failure to put #India on the #RedList soon enough, the decision to remove the 😷mandate from schools will certainly result in more #COVID & #LongCovid cases.
It is too early to know whether hospitalisations & deaths will rise too.
We can but hope they don’t.

I want to talk about big holes in our border controls in more detail in the light of these instances from other countries showing how high is the risk is of imported cases from 🇮🇳 being spread onwards.

All these passengers had pre flight negative tests.
1/. In the U.K. a Lateral Flow Test is enough as a pre flight test.

2/. It can be done 3 days before departure. That is a long time when prevalence is high as it is in India. Nearly 30% positivity in Delhi yesterday.

How many slip through that net.

gov.uk/guidance/coron…
That was up from 20.22% just three days before on the 15th April.

Even that is scarily high.

No wonder so many are arriving in other airports (eg Toronto/ Vancouver/ Hong Kong) and testing positive after arrival.

3/ At lease they require arrival airport tests. We don’t

Nearly all of the twice-daily flights between Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and Toronto Pearson Airport carried passengers infected with COVID-19.

Yes India is not on the U.K. #RedList

torontosun.com/news/local-new…
Since mid February passengers over the age of 5yrs are required to provide a pre flight negative Covid test.

But, like the Delhi-Hong Kong flight this is not stemming the flow.
There have been a total@of 106 infected flights landing in Canada since March 4th.

30 originate from Delhi.

Limited data on the extent of the reach of infection but 14 show a a minimum of a 6 row reach.

So more than one case.

India recorded 234,692 new infections in the 24 hrs to Saturday morning, according to health ministry data, the 8th record daily increase in 9 days. Fatalities rose by 1,341 to reach a total of 175,649..but the Indian Gov is accused of GROSS undercounting theguardian.com/world/2021/apr…
This is what complacency looks like...

Meanwhile it (as have we, many European countries, the USA, Iran and Brazil) has helped fuel the 3,000,225 deaths and 139,963,964 cases globally. That’s from data released by Johns Hopkins University on Saturday.

Again. An undercount.
India created conditions to drive a dangerous new mutation. It allowed the virus to flourish before suppression
Enough population immunity to put pressure on the virus to get fitter.

It did

Meanwhile complacency created ideal condition for transmission allowing it to flourish

[1] Let me explain it for you in this thread. @IUCNRedList and their many partner organisations have been producing detailed assessments of species extinction risk in different taxonomic groups since 1994 (when the first comprehensive #RedList assessment of birds came out)
[2] Obviously we can't be at all sure that birds are typical, so it would have been wildly unsafe to go from "14% of birds are threatened" to "14% of all species are threatened". Since then, @IUCNRedList assessments have been done for an ever-expanding set of taxonomic groups...
[3] ...with the proportion threatened ranging from ~9% for bony fishes up over 60% for cycads. But the *average* level of threat has started to settle down now, at about 25%, and we now have estimates for lots of different vertebrate, invertebrate and plant groups...

1 #BOU18TC The #HouseSparrow disappears from rural and urban areas of #Europe. Cities like Prague, London (#RedList in 2002) & Valencia have experienced #urban #declines in their populations above 50%. What is happening in urban areas? #ornithology #urbanecology #urbanbirds Image
2 #BOU18TC Various potential causes for the urban #decline have been suggested. Our aim was to study if new #park policies linked to #urbanization and #reurbanization (new concept) could be a key factor for the urban decline of the #species. #ornithology #urbanecology #urbanbirds Image
3 #BOU18TC We studied the abundance of #housesparrows (point counts) in 32 #urbanparks of 4 towns of eastern #Spain. 10 of them were modified (new park policies) during the 4 studied seasons 2015-2018. We compared means of (r) and abundance between years and kinds of parks. Image
