"Capital is back because low growth is back" @PikettyLeMonde said, stating that decreasing growth leads to increasing #inequality. If that would be true, we have a social-ecological dilemma #degrowth. I wrote my BA about it and got the #GSÖBW price for it yesterday. Thread. 1/14
Yesterday was #GlobalClimateStrike. Many studies show: The #ClimateCrisis can only be solved if economic growth rates in the North decrease rapidly. @timparrique, @g_kallis, @jasonhickel. If decreasing growth necessarily leads to increasing inequality, we have a problem. 2/14
True, since the 1980s economic growth has decreased in Germany, while income and wealth inequality have increased @CharlyBartels @MiriamRehm. But is it a correlation or causality? I argue, political decisions led to increasing inequality, not declining growth. Four arguments: 3/14

Just published article in @CCPA Monitor (ed.@StuJT) analyzing #inequality & low public investment as drivers behind #Chile’s protests calling for economic justice, and how such calls could signal a break in 40-year increase in inequality there & elsewhere

Thoughtful podcast on what was probably the most promising experiment for #communism to ever work.
Many important insights:
1.) If you want an egalitarian society, politics need to be decentralized & units restricted <= ~150 families.
Interesting @nntaleb?
econtalk.org/ran-abramitzky…
2.) Kibbutz were really very close to communist ideals. NO(!) private property, children were largely raised by the community to instill the right spirit, exactly #equal salary for everyone. At their peak, more than 5% of the Israeli population lived in one.
3.) From what Ran Abramitzky explains, they were in many regard great places. Good public good provision, little conflict and very safe for children, &being in the community is good insurance against bad events happening to you. Also most places were rather well off economically

🆕Immigrant Voters, Taxation and the Size of the Welfare State 🆕

Our new paper on the effect of #immigration on #redistribution is now out as @iza_bonn Discussion Paper! @ben_elsner @EconomicsUCD @RHULECON

🧵Summary thread here 👇🏼
1/N
Research question: How does immigration (of poor people) affect public policies? Immigration may reduce taxes and spending if it lowers native voters’ support for redistribution. This is so because immigrants typically don’t have voting rights.
