🚨📝NEW PAPER📝🚨

A new study from Colorado State University's Dept. of Soil & Crop Sciences & the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology found “that #regenerative practices—including integrating crop & livestock systems—were successful as long-term #CarbonStorage solutions.”
🧵 1/7 Image
Researchers conducted a “global systematic meta-analysis of the effects of #regenerative management practices on Soil Organic Carbon (#SOC), Particulate Organic Carbon (#POC) & Mineral-Associated Organic Carbon (#MAOC) in cropland.”

2/
They found that:
1️⃣ “no-till (NT) and cropping system intensification increase #SOC (11.3% and 12.4%, respectively), #MAOC (8.5% and 7.1%, respectively), and #POC (19.7% and 33.3%, respectively) in topsoil (0 to 20 cm), but not in subsoil (>20 cm).”

Just as the #Ukraine crisis has been a wake-up call for societies that rely heavily on Russian energy exports and #FossilFuels generally, it also highlights another environmentally and geopolitically disastrous addiction: artificial fertilizers. A 🧵... 1/18
As @michaeltanchum notes, Russia is the world’s largest fertilizer exporter, meaning that "fertilizer represents one of the greatest vulnerabilities for both Europe and Africa."

Modern agriculture is hooked on fertilizers. And not without reason: artificial fertilizers helped send crop yields exploding as the world's human population quadrupled over the past 100 years.

Historic decisions for the #agri sector with the ordinances announced by the Union Govt, creating a progressive path forward for India's farmers, intermediaries & agri-entrepreneurs. My take on the impact in simple terms, from a farmer/ agri-entrepreneur lens...

Previously, farmers with marketable surplus could only sell to Licensed buyers such as State & private mandis, APMC licenced cold storages/ warehouses/ Companies. But these buyers could sell to anyone! A very skewed market, right!? Farmer lost earning, Trader gained margins!

Further, with the Essential Commodities Act (ECA) Govt had the right to impose price or stock control on commodities or ban exports at any time. This created intense volatility & trust deficit. No entrepreneur small or large wanted to venture into this unpredictable quagmire.

THREAD: Tomorrow's #RebuildingTogether Budget will be a defining moment for New Zealand, and for Jacinda Ardern's Govt because it will have impacts for generations to come.

We're looking for Govt to prioritise future-ready projects over 'shovel-ready' in the Covid recovery Budget. With unprecedented sums on the table, we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get a jump on the other existential crises we face.
Jobs are a priority, but they need to be created in the right industries. We need more people working in growth areas like renewable energy, sustainable transport and #regenerativeagriculture, which have a clear future in a post-#Covid19 world.

No no no no no. This article on dirty manure biogas doesn't give the reader an accurate sense of the DANGERS here, and contributes to the false narrative that this is safe. It's not. @nprDanCharles I hope this changes your mind. 1/ n.pr/37nd7U1
First, Blakely Hildebrand and Devon Hall are powerful advocates against this problem. I'm sure they spoke volumes about it, but very little made it into the article. I want to clear the (manure biogas discharge laden) air. /2
To start off, @foodandwater has done a lot of great education work around this issue. I'd suggest a primer by reading this foodandwaterwatch.org/insight/biogas… /3

Kudos to Buttigieg for bringing up the key role #RegenerativeAgriculture must play in any plan to mitigate the #ClimateCrisis during the #DemDebate. Bonus for recognizing the need to shift the climate issue towards inclusion of farmers & rural areas instead of pushing them away Image
One of the best ways to turn farming communities against any #ClimateEmergency plan is by harping on meat consumption. I remember when Iowans started burning Beatles records because Paul McCartney said he was a vegetarian.
Meat only has an excessively high carbon footprint if you erroneously include methane farts which are part of the ~natural~ carbon cycle. Focus on re-integrating livestock with #RegenerativeAgriculture practices to rebuild SOC & all food production goes carbon negative
