BREAKING: U.S. Congresswoman pens powerful letter to the PA County who fired defenders for advocating for bail reform: "I urge you to reconsider these firings, reflect upon questions of good governance & independence, & reinstate them. Their clients & our county deserve no less."
"I am deeply concerned about the recent firing of the two top public defenders in @MontcoPA--Chief Dean Beer & Deputy Chief Keisha Hudson. For the fair administration of justice across this commonwealth, we must have & protect an independent Office of the Public Defender." YES.

I know everyone is rightfully focused on Coronavirus. But if you care about criminal justice, the story you cant look away from: Last week a county in PA retaliated against & fired 2 top public defenders simply for advocating for clients. They remain fired. A chilling effect.
“Public defenders are often the only ones privy to the real, hard-hitting truths our clients live with every day.” Montgomery County, PA fired their 2 top defenders for speaking out. Telling the truth. “A shame that will mark the county for years to come.” pennlive.com/opinion/2020/0…
Call on Montgomery County, PA leadership who fired good public defenders for doing their jobs to #ReinstateKeishaandDean.

Dear @VAArk @kenlawrencejr @JoeGalePA: In what world do you think it is appropriate, legal, or moral to fire defenders for advocating for justice?

Can’t stress enough how dangerous what state & local Democratic lawmakers are currently doing around justice reform is. Bowing to racist fear tactics by pro-carceral forces to undo bail reform in NY. Firing public defenders for calling for systemic change in PA. National crisis.
In NY, instead of taking the opportunity to reject fear & *educate the public* about the importance of reform, the racist tradition of fear tactics, & call for patience, @NYSenDems are perpetrating irrationality & reinforcing to pro-carceral forces their cynical strategy works.
In PA, instead of allowing public defenders to bring to light systemic injustices they see everyday & at a more fundamental level, defend their clients, the County Commission in Montgomery County decided that defenders must simply roll over & accept injustice. Chilling effect.

🚨BREAKING: Crisis of independence. 2 brilliant public defender leaders *were just fired* in PA. Simply for filing an amicus brief in support bail reform. Retaliated against for advocating for systemic changes. Replaced w/ defenders who won't rock the boat.inquirer.com/news/montgomer…
Keisha Hudson & Dean Beer are among the leading national defenders. Willing to take their perspectives inside of court, & the injustices they see, & fight for transformation outside of it. In Montgomery County, PA, NO ONE gets a lawyer during bail hearings. They spoke out. Fired.
A few weeks ago, Dean, Keisha, & their office filed an amicus brief in support of litigation challenging bail. They laid out the facts. How bail is regularly set & people jailed w/ no lawyers to represent them. No recording of the proceeding. Told stories of impacted people.
