#rememberingRHE I had not read her stuff in quite awhile. But I remember when her husband updated her blog to say she was hospitalized... and then no news for a week. Then on FB I notice a link with her picture. I didn't even read the title; I just knew. I groaned inside.
In college she helped me to consider how questioning some of the assumptions around sexuality in my Christian formation was more than a scared choice, or a confused choice, but a brave one. And this was paired with a deep love for our Lord and the Scriptures. That's discipleship.
I appreciated how I could be bedfellows with another Episcopalian who loved the Bible and the BCP along with LGBTQ affirmation and women in ministry, pursuing life in Christ with the confidence that these two dimensions of Church were syllables of each other.

Today, like everyday, I miss my friend, who was
Most at peace on the land with her beloved husband & her babies,
Wickedly smart & hilarious,
Terrible at Instagram & eschewed being anyone’s guru,
Learned generosity of mind & heart at her family’s kitchen table,
/1 #RememberingRHE
Always chose integrity & courage over making a profit or being palatable to gatekeepers,
Gave permission to a generation,
Made origami out of hate mail,
Kept the faith,
Needed the Church enough to speak truth,
Dared to wonder, “What if I’m wrong?” out loud, /2 #RememberingRHE
Willing to keep wrestling until the blessing came,
Pulled up more chairs to the Table & scooted over to make room,
Made us laugh & made us think,
Bold and courageous and kind,
Would not be budged from her conviction that this Gospel is Good News for everyone, /3

“This is what God’s kingdom is like: a bunch of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they are hungry, because they said yes. And there’s always room for more.” - @rachelheldevans #RememberingRHE

God, I miss her.

“But there is a difference between curing and healing, and I believe the church is called to the slow and difficult work of healing. We are called to enter into one another’s pain, anoint it as holy, and stick around no matter the outcome.” - @rachelheldevans #RememberingRHE

These are very good questions. My impulsive response is "yes" to all.
I realize I’m RTing this as a Christian white male, and anything I have to say on this comes with a lot of context re: my privilege, and anything else so many other Christian white males have said, with no empathy for the mother or her child once he or she leaves the womb.
So much is wrong with how we’ve gotten here, and I’m not talking about the progressive side.
