Earlier today we were in downtown #yyc handing out water & gatorade and fruit, when we decided to stop & have a break by the Cat Cafe...when we came upon a senior lady rummaging through the city's garbage bins.

We thought she was looking for bottles to turn in for money but we were wrong. She was looking for both bottles & she was also taking food out of the bins & putting it in her cart.

As soon as we saw that we went over to offer her our help.

We went over, asked if we could get her a cold drink & a snack & asked her if she'd like to join us on our break.

She accepted. We went into the coffee shop across from the Cat Cafe (Forgot Name), grabbed some drinks & snacks and sat down in the shade across the street. #Hope

This is going to be a hard thread for some to read. Some of you might cry, Some just shed a few tears, Some of you may be angry & outraged at what has transpired...But as we have come to learn, this is the reality of running a non profit and helping people who need help the most.
We have gotten to the place where we swore to ourselves that we would never go.

We tried so hard...everyone of our Full Time volunteer staff and our other Part Time volunteers have all put blood, sweat & tears into running @HarvestHillsYYC and helping our fellow #Calgarians.
We have tried to keep up with demand, tried to keep up with running our social media profiles and our website, tried to keep up with the massive amount of assistance requests that have come up ever since the latest restrictions have come into play...We legitimately have tried...

The two requests from last night are for a single female that is taking care of her mom who is 70. She has NO food in their house.

We took her a few bags of food last night at 2:45am and left with a promise to bring a food hamper by Monday.

Just got notification of an amended copy of the Education, Labor, Housing and Family Assistance (ELFA) Budget Bill.
The just released C-print of the ELFA budget bill includes a #Broadband program for low-income New Yorkers.
The ELFA Budget bill includes the "COVID-19 EMERGENCY RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF 2021." Payments can cover rental and utility arrears going back to March 2020 and up to 3 months of prospective rent. Only "rent burdened" households can get prospective rent relief. #RentRelief

I have an emergency that I would like my Twitter Family's #Help with.

I am worried about my friend Jenn and her co workers that run @HarvestHillsYYC.

They have run themselves ragged and need help.

(1)
There's a reason why Jenn and the team have not posted or shared a lot lately on their social media accounts.

She is probably going to kill me for doing this (RIP @Hell_Berta)......but I need to do something for them. I can't sit back and watch them burn themselves out.
As everyone knows, Jenn was in a car accident in Dec. and she was hurt pretty bad. I am talking grade 3 concussion bad and really really bad whiplash and other injuries.

She is at home recovering and her fellow board members and dedicated volunteers have picked up and helped.

Yesterday, we had a call. A call that made 3 of my volunteers cry.

You see, an individual in need contacted @HarvestHillsYYC and asked for help with food. We have permission to tell his story and share his request with everyone.
It started off with a phone call to a new volunteer that was on her first on call shift over the Christmas Break. "N" called and left a message in which he asked to be called back as soon as possible.

So our volunteer Melanie returned his call.
She asked N what he needed help with & he said he needed help with food/rent cause he could pay his rent & not eat for the month & maybe eat once every 3 to 4 days....or pay some of his rent and be able to eat everyday and hope he could find the money to pay the rest of his rent.

Even in the midst of the #COVID19 pandemic some real estate agents are accused of threatening to evict tenants or defer full payment until later rather than negotiating rent reductions for them. But landlords say they're suffering too. #abc730 @GraceTobin #rent #rentrelief
Alisha and her partner John wrote to their real estate agent in March seeking rent relief for 6 months. Their landlord offered a $40 a week discount for 3 months. #abc730 #rentrelief
There’s been a six-month eviction moratorium since March for tenants who have lost income due to #COVID19. A large number of renters are expected to be evicted when it lifts in September. #abc730

Inspired by my brother, @FredTJoseph’s #RENTRELIEF @gofundme campaign, I’m kicking one off specifically for immigrants in our communities!

@GoFundMe donated $5,000. That’s enough money for 25 people who are $200 short.

Every day, we see the impact that COVID-19 is having on communities across the country and around the world. In times like this, it’s important for us to come together and support those who are most marginalized. This of course, includes immigrants. #RENTRELIEF
Immigrants have been front-line warriors fighting the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, providing medical care, picking field crops, disinfecting buildings, and delivering food and groceries to your front door. #RENTRELIEF bostonglobe.com/2020/03/28/opi…
