@Epi_D_Nique and I collaborated to provide a user-friendly review of the CDC’s study on #Covid_19 spread in elementary #schools in one Georgia district. This study is important because of its focus on young children and community spread. Happy🧵reading! cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…
Data were collected over 24 school days (Dec 1-Jan 22, 2021) on Covid-19 spread in and outside of elementary schools, from Cobb County, GA. What’s interesting about this study? It focuses solely on elementary schools. Why is that important?
These schools serve the youngest group of school age kids, and some believe their contribution to Covid spread is negligible. We know that young kids have less extreme symptoms and lower risk of death compared to older children and adults.

"I'm a teacher… we can pretend otherwise, but the education of most of our kids is being severely hampered…"

"I teach in a state secondary comp. We are doing our best, and probably doing better than many local schools...
"In short, the quality of our online provision, the attendance of kids, the actual engagement of kids, the quality of education and progress, is woefully below face to face teaching.

We can pretend otherwise, but the education of most of our kids is being severely hampered...
"Those coping the best are only the most very able and most very motivated and supported.

I gather, from friends and colleagues involved in state primaries, that education there is virtually non-existent...

"I’m a Headteacher with over 1,000 students… schools need to be open now…"

"As a Headteacher of a secondary school with over 1000 students we have no in-school transmissions and yet we remain closed...
"Situated in an area of high deprivation our child protection numbers (already high) have doubled compared to what they were last year.

So many staff and parents are paralysed with fear due to hysterical media headlines which don’t reflect their stories.
"I worry that children next year will have weakened immune systems. How will they cope with flu next year when it returns?

I worry that there will be more obesity (we have already noticed this amongst our children) and that all those ‘lost’ children will never return.

Seeing the hashtag #REOPENSCHOOLS trending is hard thing to see.
I am guessing the majority who got this trending are because they support this one sided agenda.
Clearly they have not been in school during a global pandemic.
MPs can support this all they like, they do not support the majority of students across the UK.
Yes. Parents and students are struggling. Would I rather stay at home where I am safe from not catching the virus. Yes.
Are schools safe? Simple answer; No.
I am a student that is currently worried if I am able to get the grades to go my chosen university.
As a student, I have to see through this virus. Keeping your children off school had CLEARLY suppressed the curve, but the worst is not over year. This is hurdle number one.

A 9 year old died from #Covid_19 yesterday in Florida. A 5 year old died from Covid-19 in Dallas today. A major component in the low death rate we saw in children had to do with our policy to limit children exposure, by closing schools.
As we open camps and schools, we will continually see our children die.
This tweet is not a scare tactic, it's showing you how public health works. We put in measures to protect children. The crude data only told part of the story- children aren't dying from covid.
The crude data didn't show you that this association was confounded by a intervention (school closures). It's not your job to understand confounding. We should have done a better job telling you about this.
I'm telling you now.

It's not that reopening K-12 (I'd prefer we focus on K-6) is a bad idea. It's that explicitly politicizing the decision and attacking teachers is a bad idea.
This decision MUST be made based on carefully weighing the risks and benefits based on the best available scientific evidence and LOCAL conditions. Not an upcoming election.
Trump is trying to bait Democrats into strongly opposing #ReOpenSchools, which he knows is something voters want to see happen. Much like back in April when Team Trump pushed all-or-nothing lockdown/reopen thinking & painted Dems as "Team #EndlessLockdown." Don't take the bait.
