Sen. #TedCruz is warning that the #RespectForMarriageAct could allow states like #NewYork, #Massachusetts & #California to legalize #ChildMarriage & then force other states to recognize child marriages as legitimate. He even introduced an amendment to prevent this atrocity. /1
Sen. Cruz appears to be unaware that his home state of #Texas still allows child marriage, while New York and Massachusetts each banned it in the last year. /2
And he seems to be unaware that 43 U.S. states still allow child marriage, and that a marriage that happens in one of those states must be recognized as legitimate in every other state. /3

There have been a lot of misleading claims made by #ReligiousFreedom proponents in favor of the #RespectForMarriageAct. Two stand out to me as most troubling:
First, it's claimed that relig. groups should be glad that RFMA, with the Collins' Am., affirms that people who believe in traditional marriage are "reasonable and sincere" and their convictions are "based on decent and honorable religious...premises."

Good news, right?
But that's NOT what it says. The bill does not say these things about ppl who believe in "traditional marriage," but about ppl who believe "diverse beliefs about the role of gender in marriage." Such people are, RFMA says, "due proper respect."

The Senate is poised to vote on the #RespectForMarriageAct today.

This morning, after dropping the kids off, I came home and stopped to take in the aftermath of a chaotic morning. And it got me thinking.

This is what marriage is to me. šŸ§µ Image
Bibs I should have tossed in the sink that were leaking milk onto the counter. Little toothbrushes they used to scrub the teeth that have been keeping them up at night. Tiny hairbands from Penelopeā€™s quick updo in which she kept repeating the word ā€œboshā€ while I brushed her hair.
The stacked plates, empty and crusty after a hurried but hilarious breakfast full of giggles ad music. The twins bounced along to the Christmas music as they ate their bananas and eggs while I prayed for the coffee maker to go faster.

Re: The #RespectForMarriageAct -
@joerogan @MattWalshBlog need to understand the definition of marriage is dependent upon what's objectively true. If you believe the Christian God of the Bible is the true God...
then marriage originated from and is defined by the God of the Bible... NOT the government!

Matthew 19:4 - 6 NKJVāœļø
And He answered and said to them, ā€œHave you not read that He who made them at the beginning ā€˜made them male and female,ā€™ and said,...
ā€˜For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one fleshā€™? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.ā€

1/ Marriage equality was a hard earned victory for #LGTBQ Americans, won in the courts, not the halls of our legislative bodies. The #SCOTUS decision in Obergefell finally gave same-sex couples in all 50 states the right to full, equal recognition under the law.
2/ The decision gave #LGTBQ people not just the right to publicly bond themselves to the people they love, but also the protections & economic stability that come with marriage, from being with your loved one in the hospital, to rights of parentage, to family health care plans.
3/ The current, radical SCOTUS has been systematically eroding fundamental rights, effectively stripping some Americans of their freedom and of the full benefits of citizenship. They did this with Dodds and Carson, and now are poised to undo Obergefell.

I bristle slightly (ok, I bristle a lot) when conversations about fighting the #RespectForMarriageAct revolve around #religiousliberty issues. Why? Because what both our foes and our allies hear from religious Americans is, ā€œIf gay marriage passes, it will be bad for *me.*ā€
To which the world responds, ā€œSo the prob w gay marriage is, you might have to...bake a cake?? Deal with it, bigot.ā€

No one's interested in fighting SS marriage (or the myriad other ways the Left is redefining family) if itā€™s just about minimizing discomfort of religious adults.
But that's how all these conversations come across. Not exactly the approach that will fortify wobbly-kneed Senators or citizens to stand against a cultural onslaught.

Instead, we must forcefully highlight the child-harms of marriage redefinition.

1/ History meets politics. Michelle Steelā€™s .@RepSteel vote against #RespectforMarriage means she does not know California or American history.

100 years ago, her marriage was illegal in her own California district. šŸ§µ #history #CivilRights
2/ California banned interracial marriage 1850-1948. In 1922, Congress passed the Cable Act, which removed citizenship of any U.S. *woman* who married "an alien ineligible for citizenship." They meant Asians. This targeted Asian immigrants who were barred from US citizenship.
I wrote about an illegal marriage in 1909 in what is currently is Steelā€™s congressional district, between a white woman and a Japanese American man. Itā€™s connected to an endangered National Treasure historic place she's refused to help save.
