In fact, it was their insistence on doctrinal and sexual fidelity, as well as their pro-life stances on abortion, that alienated them from the Democratic Party, despite their progressive economics and views on structural/systemic racism and injustice. 2/3
And boy do they fit the description of many evangelicals today that are "theologically conservative and socially compassionate," or "too conservative for progressives and too progressive for conservatives." They even used the phrase "politically homeless." 3/3

To paraphrase KSP, the younger gen of evangelicals are more holistically pro-life (i.e. also includes concerns about racial issues, immigration, & abuse or misogyny), are less partisan, & look more racially diverse. In other words, she is hopeful. So am I.

#Revangelical thread. Some think that evangelicalism was always doomed to fail. But it was later developments in the 80s that contributed to its unraveling: the rise of the Religious Right, prosperity televangelists, & the attractional church mvment, among others. 1/
(Some1 who represented the first 2 digressions was Pat Robertson.) But historians believe in the 'contingency' of history, that things didn't have to turn out a certain way. We need to return to the original vision of being theologically robust yet socially/culturally engaged. 2/
How do we maintain theological depth w/ such a diverse mvment? The YRR had it part right when they dug deeper into their theological tradition. The shortcoming was its narrowness. Evangelicals of ALL stripes need to dig deeper into their rich theological heritage. 3/
THREAD. I only identify as "conservative" and "evangelical" in qualified terms due to their politicized connotations. I often have to distinguish between being "evangelical" from being "Republican,"... 1/3
...& I always preface the word "conservative" w/ "theological," such as when I say I'm "theologically conservative and socially compassionate" (Rondell Trevino, @TheImmCoalition). I have found a better description is "orthodox," or as Alisa says, "historic Christianity." 2/3
Better yet, as I (& my friend @ianharber) like to say, "historic, orthodox Christianity." This includes the creeds and historic Christian teaching on things like sexuality. This is a huge part of being a "confessing millennial." 3/3

Thread on "evangelicalism." Decades ago, a young group of Christians including Billy Graham, Carl Henry, Harold Ockenga and others set out to start a movement that didn't fall to the extremes of liberalism on the one hand and fundamentalism on the other. 1/9
They became known as "neo-evangelicals," but soon they were just "evangelicals." They wanted a Christianity that was orthodox but also engaged culture constructively and not just antagonistically. Henry would write about social justice. Graham befriended MLK. 2/
Ockenga started the org that would become "World Relief." John Stott included social action and justice language in the Lausanne Covenant. Their vision was growing.

The Liturgists helped me deconstruct but gave me nothing to rebuild except arrogance and a new progressive fundamentalism that had nothing to do with the real Jesus.
Ironically it was a deeper exploration of orthodox theology that helped me reconstruct a richer faith than before

Systemic injustice is very real and we need the conversations that wokeness has brought us.
I love therapy. Iโve done therapy. I want everyone to do it.
But these are not adequate replacements for the eternal love of the triune God.
