(1) As a hurricane watcher (amateur, from behind a screen) I take an interest in other disaster types like earthquake, tsunami, & volcano.

International media coverage of the #Fagradalsfjall eruption in Iceland misses the mark a bit. Here's why.
(2) I see this phenomenon all the time, whenever New Zealand has an earthquake, tsunami or volcanic eruption.

Few in the media are trained in the responsible reporting of such disasters. They aim for clicks & ratings with little regard for public safety (anywhere.)
(3) Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs) usually issue media guidance & I've read such materials produced by the USA's FEMA.gov (the largest EMA in the world.) Unfortunately FEMA's website redesign makes it hard to find them now, but I'll add links below later on.

Strong signs of a potential #volcano #eruption near #Keilir on #Reykjanes peninsula. Scientists reporting #earthquake patterns that are similar to the start of an eruption. Eruption likely to start within the next few hours. Image
The ICAO airport code for @kefairport and #Reykjavik airport have been raised to Orange - which indicates a high likelihood of imminent eruption. Rescue teams are being put on standby. Coast Guard @gaeslan helicopter to fly over the area shortly. Press briefing scheduled for 1600
This potential eruption is not expected to cause any damage to infrastructure and towns/cities according to @almannavarnir. The eruption has not yet started and is far away from habited places.

Many have asked about what effects a potential #eruption in the #Reykjanes peninsula on @kefairport & #ReykjavikAirport. Based on standard procedure all airports in 120km radius from a #volcano get closed immediately and then reopened when @Vedurstofan issues ash advisory Image
The @kefairport location is optimal, even though it may be close to the potential eruption site since it is located on higher ground, greatly reducing the threat from lava flows. Depending on the magnitude of the eruption planes might have to change flight paths on arrival. Image
Given how few flights there are daily to/from #Iceland this is not expected to cause major issues. The Civil Aviation Authority @isavia is going through its response plans and preparing for the potential effects of an eruption. Image

ImageImage

The people in Iceland have to adjust to new corona restrictions due to the increasing number of infections. In the fight against the spread of the corona virus,
the number of participants for public meetings will be reduced to a maximum of 20 people from Monday. Exceptions to this apply to universities and funerals. In addition, bars, nightclubs and gyms will be closed, as the Icelandic government announced on Saturday evening.
In doing so, Minister of Health Svandís Svavarsdóttir followed a proposal by Icelandic chief epidemiologist Thórólfur Gudnason. Schools and kindergartens remain open.

#ICELAND #REYKJAVIK #CORONAVIRUS #RESTRICTIONS

In Iceland, the corona events almost completely came to a standstill in the summer - now the government of the island state is reacting to increasing numbers of infections.
Pubs and nightclubs in the region around the capital Reykjavik will be closed for four days due to the current number of cases. Health Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir arranged for this. The developments over the weekend should show what happens after that.
2230 corona infections have been detected in Iceland since the pandemic began. Ten sick people have died so far. There were hardly any active cases in the summer, but the numbers have been increasing again since the end of July:
