THREAD: Regarding the #RidgeCrestearthquake and #Coso #volcano there has been a lot of concern, mostly from misinformation broadcast by non-geologists, that the #earthquake sequence near #Ridgecrest, CA means an imminent eruption from the Coso Volcanic Field or was caused by it.
Coso is directly tied to the subject I was working on for my Ph.D. (geo.arizona.edu/Antevs/Theses/…), so I spent a lot of time getting to know it and its neighboring volcanoes and faults.
The following is a summary of what geoscientists know about Coso, how it is monitored, and what we can realistically expect from it. If this is at all useful to you, please feel free to share it.

(1) Thread: June 5th #earthquake near #Ridgecrest CA

I'm an earthquake survivor from NZ (2011) who will provide reporting & commentary below, just as soon as I can load the USGS pages properly.

This was big, shallow, & the city has 28k people.

ready.gov/earthquakes
(2) OK, have given up on the USGS website for now. Current USGS-sourced assessment of this EQ is:

Mag: 7.1 (severe)
Depth: 0.9km (half a mile, v. v. shallow)
Location: 17km NNE of Ridgecrest, CA (very close to city)
(3) I would be very surprised if there is no loss of life from this EQ.

185 people died in the Christchurch NZ EQ of 2/22/11. I was thrown across the room, but was fine, compared to others.

Ridgecrest: 28,000 + rural areas is a lot of people affected.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake just occurred in Ridgecrest, CA. 113 miles from LA, 146 miles from Las Vegas. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake is 5 times bigger than
a magnitude 6.4 earthquake, which occurred July 4th in CA desert far from pop. This is 11 times stronger (energy release).
2. Very powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake described as rolling compared to the big jolt of the 6.4. Much bigger and rolled longer than the last one.
3. 7.1 hit Ridgecrest at 8:20pm local time, 36 minutes ago.

(1) Thread: 🚨Joint press briefing from the Mayor and local First Responder agencies after #RidgecrestEarthquake

My comments below.
(2) At 2min46s into the briefing, a small aftershock was felt.

This is what the aftermath of an earthquake is like. Repeated aftershocks, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.
(3) The City of Ridgecrest and the County of Kern have declared states of emergency.

At that point the video ended but the briefing obviously went on for longer. I will bring you links or info about it when available.
