"I know the Minister will cite CQC guidance, but it is not strong enough, which is why so many feel that it needs to be enshrined in one form or another" Thank you @tracey_crouch for sharing not only your personal story last week, but that of your young constituent too #rfr
"We have to say Never Again. As other Members have said, there is cross-party support & we will work with the Government to put this into law. Surely the time has come to create a new legal right to maintaining contact" Thank you @libdemdaisy for your support #rightsforresidents
"We are failing vulnerable members of our society and it simply cannot be allowed to continue. We must end all unlawful visiting restrictions and stop this unnecessary suffering and neglect" Thank you so much @EstherMcVey1 for speaking at the debate last week #rightsforresidents

Every letter one of our members receives from either their MP or directly from @GillianKeegan ends in the same way - who to contact including @CareQualityComm đŸ§” 1/9 #rightsforresidents
but what is the point @GillianKeegan in contacting @CareQualityComm if they cannot act on our behalf? 2/9 #rightsforresidents
Every MP that as written to Minister for Care and Mental Health has received the same letter with the same ending - recommending you speak to @CareQualityComm only they will not respond to any complaint - so who will @GillianKeegan 3/9 #rightsforresidents

freedom for all - except care homes - here are some of the “freedoms” still in place this morning - will there be a change in guidance? rolling lockdowns continue @GillianKeegan @sajidjavid and are you really going to bring in a “pay per view” really? #rfr
As mask wearing goes - full PPE remains - right or wrong? But why such a difference from seeing family in different homes - a home setting nothing a (care) home setting - mask, gloves and aprons still required #rfr Image
We still need to be tested - makes sense, for now, but are we now going to be charged a “pay per view” tax to see our loved ones? Most homes let families test at home now so - will we have to pay? @GillianKeegan #rightsforresidents Image

2021 was a year many of us will remember, probably for the wrong reasons. A total lockdown that had started in March 2020, care homes had never really opened up and for most, window visits were the best we could hope for - horrific (thread following!) #rightsforresidents
We were invited to join @leicesterliz at an online meeting she set up for families, to learn more about the situation, hear what people were experiencing first hand and gave all an opportunity to talk openly #rightsforresidents
We have had a second meeting in the early part of 2021 with @Helen_Whately #essentialcaregiver status was discussed, two our members joined us to share their personal stories - #essentialcaregiver would first appear in the guidance in March #rightsforresidents

Who is doing what with regards to #essentialcaregiver status. Who is promoting, what does it mean?
In March @NCFCareForum put out a joint post with ourselves and have been actively pushing for fairer visiting ever since - thank you #rightsforresidents socialcare.blog.gov.uk/2021/03/30/par

The @CareEngland 'charity' & @ProfMartinGreen make noises about #essentialcaregiver but until the recent change in guidance most of their members have been very reluctant to follow it, why? they have denied their 'customers' their basic #humanrights #rightsforresdients
We hope @NationalCareAsc would follow #essentialcaregiver guidance but on @BBCBreakfast their vice president talks of pods/screens for a single case - ECG can still visit during an outbreak (2+cases) do they not allow the guidance? #rightsforresidents

A brief monthly summary of the website review of the board members of @CareEngland companies and whether they are promoting #essentialcaregiver @CareQualityComm @KateTerroni was up for an award so hope you will read this and follow up asking why some are not #rfr
@Wellburncare hmmm no change from months ago - no ECG, promotes pods and 5 named visitors - that changed in JULY! #rightsforresidents wellburncare.co.uk/staying-safe

Today we are going to look at some of the current guidance that every care home resident/family/friend has to go follow (if they are lucky) - does any other part of society have 20 pages of who and how you can see your loved one? Time to revisit @GillianKeegan @sajidjavid #rfr
You might be allowed to hold hands but it come with risks.... they would rather you didn't, but if you do, keep it brief @MattHancock this was in place when you were in charge as well #rightsforresidents
At the end of the day it is all just guidance, it does not have to be followed, this is what we have found and care home providers/managers have the final say - many do - many really don't #rightsforresidents

Long thread. Today we are looking at the websites/visiting policies of those care providers who are on the board of @CareEngland - we mentioned this when we met with @ProfMartinGreen a couple of months ago. Very little appears to have changed. #rightsforresidents
We know there was an interesting discussion on #Essentialcaregiver last Friday hosted by @CPA_SocialCare attended by many including @NCFCareForum @CQCProf will it actually make any difference - @GillianKeegan good morning and welcome DMs open #rightsforresidents
We shall start with @Wellburncare no mention of #Essentialcaregiver and promoting pod/screened visits - 18 months on, Why? #rightsforresidents

In May we carried out a survey (from 10th -21st) to give an overall idea of what is happening. Thank you to 1,177 people who completed it. Today more changes come - we very much hope that some of the results below rapidly change as well - Thread to follow: #rightsforresidents
The first question: where is your relative/friend in a care home - We got replies from across the UK (88.7% England, 6.2% Scotland, 3.4% Wales and 1.6% NI) #rightsforresidents
The results of this next question shows a reflection of the care home 'market' and how a large % is run but Care Groups of all sizes #rightsforresidents

It has been 465 days (12th March 2020) since many Care homes locked their doors - that is 66 weeks or 11,160 hours during that time so much has happened, so many lost, and still so many denied the basic human right to family life #rightsforresidents
There have been 425 publications/guidance issued by the government for all care settings (including care at home/assisted living/chc) of those 188 relate directly to Care Homes and 19 to 'guidance' on visiting #rightsforresidents
According to @ONS between 20/3/2020 and 02/04/2021 (figures released 11/05/2021) 173,974 people have died in care homes in England and Wales. The vast majority of these, our loved ones, with minimal family contact, sometimes none #rightsforresidents

8th March this year saw a long awaited changed in guidance for all - but esp for those in Care Homes, the big change- #Essentialcaregiver was mentioned and one named visitor allowed indoors and to hold hands (everyone else could meet in groups of 6 outside) #rfr
Screens/pods still mentioned for outdoor visits for more than one person, but this time more homes did open up. There was testing, PPE, time restrictions and supervision - some things mentioned in the guidance, others not but made up by local authorities or care groups. #rfr
Essential Care Giver did and still does seem to allude most people/care groups. We joined forces with @relresuk @NCFCareForum and @JohnCampaign to put in place some useful guidelines, sadly still needed& we need @CareQualityComm to enforce this relres.org/essential-care

A week in which regulations relaxed and life started to get back to normal....

Unless you are in a care home

You can nominate 5 people to see (only two at a time) and if your care group provider allows this #rightsforresidents
We could go in a group of six inside a pub, shop, restaurant, cinema, museum - you cannot if you are in care home - you must stay outside and if you do go inside you have to isolate for 14 days - again this depends on if your care provider will let you go out #rightsforresidents
We can move home, always a traumatic&stressful experience. If you are in care home you can as well, but you have to isolate for 14 days. Imagine being dropped off somewhere strange&not being able to leave your small room for 14 days - many with dementia wander #rightsforresidents

Happy Easter to all our followers, it is the second year that most of us are unable to be with our loved ones in care, but we are grateful to all the carers and nurses working this weekend #rfr
We still have a long way to go and must ensure that #essentialcaregiver is enshrined in law, so this barbaric locking away of all those in care, young and old, can never happen again #rfr
We also look forward to continuing our work with @NCFCareForum @ageukcampaigns @Car_Abrahams @JohnCampaign @relresuk and our fellow #fivenations campaigners @ChrScotland @JulieannNally @2x2x2V and forming new parternships @CareEngland ? how about it? #rfr

As an emotional week ends, we want to reflect on what has been & what still needs to be done. New 'guidance' came into affect on 8th March. We all knew it was coming, it arrived late on Thursday. Some care providers have embraced, many just ignored our campaign goes on#rfr
Over the last few months we have regularly met with
@NCFCareForum @age_uk @relresuk @JohnCampaign
and others, in partnership we have issued open letters to Government and more and continue to work together #partnersincare

Rights for Residents response to the Government’s announcement - In our view the Government's announcement is a case of the emperor's new clothes.
The huge pressure from the media, MPs, charities & Campaign groups calling on the Government to end the isolation of care home residents has forced the Government to address the fact that thousands are giving up the will to live in a pandemic of loneliness.
However, the plan falls far short of what Rights For Residents and other campaigners are calling for.Unless the Government make visiting Guidance mandatory we expect many care homes will continue to lock relatives out.

Rights for Residents was set up by Jenny&Diane in Sept last year because after a heartbreaking visits to Jenny's mum they decided enough was enough & decided to do something - there was no other campaigning - this is a sample of what they have achieved
They set up a FB page and then the petition which now has over 200,000 signatures on it change.org/p/please-let-m
 - it is never too late to sign
As momentum built so did the profile - first came @ExpressGilo who kicked the campaign into the headlines
and still is working tirelessly with us today

Christmas has been & gone, we are in a new year but it is all sounding & feeling very similar to where we were. This time we are ready. We are hurt, we are saddened but we are standing up for what matters and we are united with one aim to see our loved ones #rightsforresidents
Over the last week there has been a lot of anger & frustration building up. Will our loved ones get a vaccine, many still haven’t, goal posts get moved, &the gap widens between 1st/2nd vaccine, will it change the visiting guidance, will we ever see them again,no one will answer!
We hear that Covid+patients are to be discharged into care homes, again. There is a plan, does anyone know it? Where are these designated homes, how will they be managed, will staff be completely separate&where are they coming from?will our loved ones be safe? Can this happen again?

Tomorrow it will be 300 days since I had a meaningful visit with my mother, or held her hand. These photographs were taken exactly one year apart, on her birthday on New Year's Eve. She has lost over 2 stone and pretty much all all of her sparkle....

The visits in the glass pod in the care home car park have been horrible for us both. Speech therapy has stopped so she has no speech now. She can barely hear. She used to read avidly and loved TV. She does neither now. Covid has swept through...
3/ her care home so all residents have been confined to their rooms for weeks. All visits were cancelled since early December and there is no news on when or if they will recommence. iPad calls are hopeless. The vaccines are being given so I've begged for "care partner" status...

"While I know many of you will be hard at work over the holiday season, I hope you also find time to rest, relax and reconnect safely with your families and friends." from @Helen_Whately Care Newsletter - how many care home families will be reconnected.....#rightsforresidents
"Thanks to effective stockpiling, we’re confident you won’t run out of aprons, masks, gloves and other essentials. What’s more, you can continue to order these and other items through the PPE portal, free of charge, until March 2021" hope all our care homes can confirm this
"The roll out of visitor testing in care homes has also been another milestone with the majority of homes reporting they are providing the service. This means many more residents, visitors and staff can share in the joy of these emotional reunions" - this is a straight lie

Thousands of our loved ones were promised hugs, vaccines, to be reunited at Christmas - care groups are saying no, councils are saying no and we are being ignored and our loved ones are #stilllockedaway we will not stop #rightsforresidents
hundreds of photographs from our #stilllockedaway gallery have been used to make this image - @Keir_Starmer @AngelaRayner @JonAshworth are all silent so who will shout out for us.....#rightsforeresidents

A month ago with a lot of fanfare @Helen_Whately, @MattHancock and @BorisJohnson announced with delight that we would all get to hug our loved ones again - the media were pushed out to watch a couple of lucky homes in the pilot scheme as they started testing relatives
and what have we learnt in that month - that Councils and Care Groups do not trust the tests. That screens are going up in care homes, that very few will even be allowed to visits let alone hug their loved ones this Christmas. Insurance is still a problem
That promises are made and then hopefully forgotten - but unlike many of our loved ones, young and old, who may not remember us any more we have not forgotten and will not forget. More #pointlesspilots are being done by councils - and so many still wait
