A tiny subset of terrible things that have happened at #Rikers Island #Jail in #NewYorkCity: a primer for upper middle class white people. If you don't know these stories, you are not doing your job as a human.
I'm tweeting about #jails and #bail because (real, substantive) #bailreform is good for society and we need more of it. And I'm tweeting for upper middle class white people because we have a lot of power/positionality, and yet tend to be least knowledgeable about the issues.
Upper middle class white people: I beg you, I plead with you, to educate yourself on these critical criminal justice topics which affect minoritized people most directly, and yet which also affect ALL of society.
The situation on #Rikers has worsened. According to information from city's Board of Correction, 21 inmates, 12 jail employees and five correctional health workers have tested positive for #coronavirus up from a total of eight people the day before:

Earlier this week, the chief physician for city jails warned public officials that a "storm is coming" + that the jails needed to be emptied as much as possible to prevent a massive outbreak. This is a 375% increase in #coronavirus cases on #RikersIsland:

Public defenders warned that officials needed to act quickly + that the situation on #Rikers is a "ticking time bomb." Prosecutors, courts + @NYCMayor's office have been working to release hundreds of inmates from the city's jails.

NEW - #Manafort has been transferred to New York Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to the Bureau of Prisons, w/ release date is set for 12/25/2024.
Among current inmates are New York City 2017 Halloween terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov and Caesar Sayoc, who allegedly sent multiple explosive packages to prominent Democrats last fall. Joaquin Guzman, also known as #ElChapo, is also reportedly being held at MCC.
In a letter (obtained by @MartaDhanis) from @ManhattanDA to DOJ, DA Vance says his "office has never taken the position that #Manafort should be housed at #Rikers Island (as opposed to another state or federal facility in New York), or that he be placed in solitary confinement."
