I'm interested at the idea of Shelob being introduced before Adar's defeat.
As a reader, there are certain themes when she was introduced in The Two Towers that stuck out to me.
In the show we are introduced through Adar of the idea of the Orcs in a #RingsOfPower #LotR #RoP ImageImage
different light. Adar, with his corrupt but still distinguishably elvish appearence, speaks of how the orcs were treated of Sauron and basically perceives them and himself as beings in shackles who didn't choose how to be and are living with what they were given.
While arguably
the Orcs ARE written as bad by Tolkien, I first remember perceiving the Orcs thus when Shelob had been introduced. Unlike them, Shelob did not answer to Sauron and, because of her power and unique utility, she was valued. She was both a guard and provided Sauron with spectacle

By now you have probably heard that the #RingsofPower score foreshadowed the season climax, the Sauron reveal, because Sauron's theme is Halbrand's theme backwards and in minor. But this explanation doesn't really do McCreary justice, so let's take a closer look.
Neither of these techniques are new or groundbreaking. Plenty of scores have motifs that can be played in retrograde, or inverted, or both at the same time etc. And playing a major-moded theme in minor is so common as to be cliché.
But first off, Halbrand is already in minor. The first pitch hangs on the second degree of the scale, which is a notoriously sad or longing sound, before resolving to the minor chord tones. It's when this shape is changed to major (like in Ep 6) that is the exception.

So why was #Sauron on that raft? I know that's a question a lot of people are asking and one that both Charlie and the #RingsOfPower showrunners have said will be addressed in Season 2. Unlike Sauron, I'm not in anyone's head, but I can give it my best (hopeful) guess.
Disclaimer that I have not had time to do a rewatch of eps 2-8 yet, so I don't know how well this will hold up in light of that. 2/
The show has been leaning heavily into the "chance" meeting. Galadriel references it explicitly more than once. (I know this has been talked about, but stay with me here). I'd even say episode 1 ends with her jumping off the ship almost as an act of faith in such an event. 3/

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed #RingsOfPower. Here’s why:

Tolkien’s stories are primarily about Wisdom, not War. Courage & hope aren’t given, but learned & cultivated. The humble prevail by guiding each other’s hearts with wisdom. Truth paves way for goodness. This show gets this.
War exists on Middle-Earth — & it often seems central— but it’s dreaded, avoided, & always rooted in foolishness. This is why this isn’t an Epic War show. It’s a book of wisdom on screen. It’s unique right now as a story that uses actions AND words to elevate goodness over power.
Tolkien was able to write an epic tale in a trilogy (LOTR), 1x book (Hobbit), or even 1x chapter (Appendixes, Silmarillion, etc). How? Because he knew the essentials of a wisdom adventure. We don’t just want a “good guy/girl” to win. We want “goodness” itself to win. Truth works.

Mere hours till the #RingsofPower finale. I'm trying to keep my expectations in check because I just don't know if it's possible to wrap this up in a way that will truly satisfy me (YMMV, of course). Naturally, the (potential and thoroughly teased) Sauron reveal has me on edge.
Before the show actually aired and we were getting short clips and stills my suspicions about The Stranger were tempered by the fact that it just seemed...too obvious. But the idea that Galadriel happened to be, unbeknownst to her, lost at sea with the very person she was hunting
Well that was kinda wonderful. I've always liked the idea of the show keeping us guessing on who Sauron might be. As I've said before, it's a literalization of something going on across the history of the texts that's been transformed into narrative. I like it. It's clever.

The problem with #RingsofPower has nothing to do with "woke" or "not being true to Tolkien". 🧵

The problem is: it's terribly written. No character does anything for any reason except to move the plot along. Everything is perfunctory. The pacing is all over the place. No menace.
The dialogue is flat and unimaginative. The structure is feeble.

Structure:
Like any "big cast" show, they should have had 1-2 episodes focussing on relatable characters (as in LOTR) then gradually introduced the others - that way, we care.

I don't care about any of them.
I'm kinda curious about who The Stranger is, but I expect when I find out my response will be ... oh.

I don't care if anybody else lives or does. They're all, almost without exception, humourless, flat cyphers, defined almost entirely by hairstyles and costumes.

A thread: I would like to address the people who are still enjoying #RingsOfPower, in a good faith effort to open their eyes to how bad the show really is. To do this, I will showcase the shows biggest flaws. Structure and establishment.
You see, in any good linear story that results in a definitive conclusion, you need to in the first episode, maybe 2, establish and solidify the premise of the story and the characters motivations.
In Rings of Power, through the 1st 3 episodes, the show does a terrible job of establishing a premise and character motivations. We have 6-7 different plotlines, with only 2 somewhat connected, and the only real setup for the show is "evil exists".

I do like the cool sand-being-formed-into-shapes-on-a-drumhead opening. Wasn't there another opening filmed with molten metal pouring down ring molds, though? Is that being saved for later?

What's with the tattered awning thing? Does this franchise actually remember that orcs can't handle sunlight very well -- unlike a certain Peter Jackson I could mention?

#RingsOfPower

How many have heard of Parzival? In Wolfram von Eschenbach's epic poem written in the early 13th century the half brother of the titular character is named Feirefiz. Described as having skin like a magpie or parchment with writings on it, Feirefiz is the son of Parzival's 1/
father and an African queen. Some scholars think that von Eschenbach may have seen someone with vitiligo and though it was the result of a interracial pairing. Nevertheless, Feirefiz is described as handsome and many of the ladies of the court swoon. Eventually he and his 2/
wife (a white European woman, to be clear) head east and, per the tale become the parents of Prester John. In the late 13th century another Arthurian tale speaks of Morien, another son of one of Arthur's knights and a Black African queen. Morien is described as all black 3/
