[Thread] Really interesting moment from today that I just have to share from #RiseUpOct8:

During the bomb scare, they shoved everyone into one corner by Maryland Ave. A middle-aged guy started playing music from his phone, and I said "Hey! That's 'Tomorrow Never Knows'!"
I started small-talking him about the Beatles, the new Abbey Road cuts from Nigel Martin, how my mom would play Abbey Road growing up. He shared his own moments before I asked him where he was from.

"Oh, the Alliance Defending Freedom," he responded
Curious, I chatted a bit more--He was Bob, was in SCOTUS during the Masterpiece decision, found it odd how clerical the Court was. I noted I grew up Catholic--more Dorothy Day than Bill Donahue--so understood what a mass was.

Told him I was from @TransEquality then walked away.

The Supreme Court starts hearings today to decide if gay and transgender people are protected from job discrimination.

If the court rules against that, LGBTQ employees fired or discriminated against will have limited ability to seek justice under federal law.
The Supreme Court is hearing cases from 3 people who say they were fired over being gay or transgender:

▪️ Aimee Stephens, fired after coming out as trans
▪️ Gerald Bostock, fired after joining a gay-friendly softball league
▪️ Donald Zarda, fired after revealing he was gay
What is Title VII?

▪️ The civil rights law protects workers from job discrimination on the basis of: sex, race, color, religion or national origin.

▪️ Today's Supreme Court hearings are to decide if it covers gay and transgender people.

▪️ The Obama admin. interpreted it does.

Tomorrow #SCOTUS is going to hear three cases that will decide if employers can fire LGBTQ people for no other reason than being LGBTQ, or any expression thereof. This is very worrisome.
I don’t think the outlook is good at all. Gorsuch and Kavanagh are partisan ideologues, who do not care about protections for marginalized groups, including #LGBTQ people. So, as I brace myself for a painful hearing and a bad decision, I have to think about what I can do.
This case will hinge on whether people can invoke religion to fire LGBTQ people and cause pain and suffering. The plaintiffs are not ministers. They are doing everyday jobs. But this is going to be a case of “religious freedom” giving a license to discrimination.
