Last year I taught myself R with resources I primarily found via Twitter. I've been meaning to share some of the resources here, and I finally have a little time today. So here they are... 🧵

@AcademicChatter #rstudio #rstatistics
I started with A Psychologists Guide to R. I highly recommend at least doing the first few weeks. This made me more comfortable with the logic of coding in R- and also basics like, how to download R and RStudio? github.com/seanchrismurph…
Another great resource for beginners is R for Data Science. The modules on data wrangling were especially helpful for me.

Do you use #CameraTraps for wildlife abundance? Do you feel intimidated by the complex models & codes that statisticians come up with to help design & analyze camera trap data?
If your answer is yes to any of the above, follow this thread with a new resource that is pure gold:
Spatial Capture Recapture (#SCR) co-developer @david_borchers and fellow @indurbach with @statsStAndrews have created a fabulous website with online training material to help get started with spatial capture-recapture (SCR) methods, with a focus on camera traps.
With simple, intuitive navigation, the site has three sections:
1. Software
2. Training videos
3. Other resources
While there are a few books on #SCR, remember the method has undergone rapid development during the last decade, making it daunting to keep pace...

Now that you know how a general package structure looks like, we can start building a package 👩🏼‍💻
#RStudio is great, just follow these steps: Select "File", "New Project...", "New Directory" and select "R Package". You can now give your R package a meaningful name, select a path and hit "Create project". Showing RStudio wizard when creating a new package
You're now ready to go! Once executed, you have a fully functional package structure in your #Rproject (that we already discussed) 😊 Now it's time to move your function to your "R/" folder and populate it! Showing how the RStudio desktop version looks like with a ty

“Brain charts for the human lifespan”! The result of 200 people putting their 🧠🧠🧠together (120,000+ of them!) to generate growth curves from mid-gestation to 100 years. brainchart.io & biorxiv.org/content/10.110… @jakob_seidlitz @SimonWhite83 @edbullmore @Aaron_A_B
How did we get here? Through countless zoom hours, DUAs and emails, we aggregated data from over 100,000 individuals across 6 continents, comprising over 120,000 structural brain scans and racked up 1,400,000 @FreeSurferMRI computing hours processing them @CambridgeRcs.
Next we planned to run these derived variables through @WHO recommended GAMLSS models and quickly found we had to go a little beyond the standard functionalities if we were to account for the complexity posed by multi-site imaging data.

Fall is here and a lot of students are starting their journey as #rstats users. This can be tough, especially with all the barriers to learning that 2020 is throwing at us. Here are some tips (almost all from @JennyBryan!) I wish I’d followed from the start of my #rstats career
Beginning #rstats users sometimes focus on the mechanics of R and don’t get around to establishing some best practices that will set you up for writing more efficient and reproducible code. These all will make your life easier in the long run, I promise! #openscience
1. Develop a project-oriented workflow. Decide on a common file structure and stick with it for every project. Here’s what I use, based on this great paper journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/a…. That way, you always know where to find files in any project Image

Just learned an amazing #rstats trick: You can embed #learnr apps using `knitr::include_app()` for live coding demos *inside* #xaringan slides! 🤯 This way you don't have to switch b/w slides and #rstudio IDE for live demos, reducing cognitive load. #rmarkdown knows no bounds! 🤩
Here's a little code snippet that shows how: Image
IMO live coding inside slides would be particularly useful for illustrating common beginner mistakes and "gotchas" (as demo'd above). If you have the #shiny apps publishing capacity, you could even have students type code inside slides along with you in real time

1/13) This semester's teaching on Bayesian stats and cognitive modeling is over! Thanks to COVID (ironically!), I recorded all my teaching sessions w/ @zoom_us, and they are available on #Youtube.

Wondered what have we covered to the cog-neuro audience? A thread.
2/13) After the overall intro, we had two sessions on #R #Rstudio to bring everyone onto the same page. I am rather old-schooled, so we only covered base R (not #tidyverse)

L01 Intro,
L02 R (P1)
L03 R (P2)
3/13) Then we covered foundations of probability theory, and the Bayes' rule. We used a simple and classic binomial example to show how posterior is updated in light of prior and incoming data.
