Are you having a hard time keeping track of what the Education Minister has been up to?

I don’t blame you.

After downloading all his responsibilities to divisions, he’s now meddling in public health decisions that aren’t good for his local politics.

🧵

Back in August, while the Minister took the summer off, case counts began to skyrocket. The SHA created a back to school plan to better protect children for the fall term.

The Minister opted to ignore it.

Not wanting to face potential criticism, the Minister downloaded all of the responsibilities, leaving decision-making to the local school divisions to work with their local medical health officers.

Yesterday we posted about the number of schools with confirmed Covid cases in them. Do you know where to find that information? NOT from @SKGov. (A thread 1/4)
Instead, families and community members are forced to rely on leaked letters from the SHA and journalists are forced to press school divisions for confirmation of rumours of Covid cases in schools. (2/4)
Other provinces have mandated school boards to publicly disclose all Covid cases (with steps taken to maintain patient privacy) - why won't Saskatchewan? (3/4)

❗ WARNING: LONG THREAD, but it's important ❗ In 2017, the #SaskParty cut #STC, leaving thousands of people across our province stranded. 🚌

Since then, I've heard so many stories from folks who have been left in bad situations because of this dangerous cut: (1/6)
🏥 seniors who can't get to medical appointments
👍 rural and Northern people who are forced to hitchhike
🚗 low-income folks who struggle to afford a car
🌾 farmers who can't get parts sent out (2/6)
♿ people with disabilities who lost their independence
🚌 small businesses that can't get affordable shipping
🏫 young people away for school who can't get home #sasked (3/6)

Scott Moe has shown us he can't be trusted. But don't take it from me...just look at his record. During the last #skpoli election, the Sask Party promised there would be no cuts or sell-offs. But when the election was over, they:

➡️ cut $54 million from classrooms (1/4) #sasked
➡️ cut $25 million from universities
➡️ cut 90 healthcare workers in #YXE & #YQR
➡️ sold off STC, leaving thousands stranded
➡️ had dozens of meetings to try to sell SaskTel and SGI
➡️ and much more* (2/4)
We don't have to accept a government that says one thing and does another. It's time to stop Scott Moe's dangerous cuts and choose a government that invests in people.

It's time for change, Saskatchewan. 🛑✂️🛑✂️🛑 (3/4)

THREAD: Saskatchewan is lagging behind the rest of the country in testing.

Fast access to #COVID19SK testing is essential to safely sending kids and teachers back to school. If kids, teachers, or school staff get sick, we need fast and reliable access to testing – period. (1/10)
Any delay in access to testing means kids in #sasked could be out of class for days, with their parents having to stay at home with them, only to find out they have a simple cold. (2/10)
Or worse, that an outbreak will happen but we won’t identify it until it’s spread far more than it would have if we’d tested and traced quickly. (3/10)

#SASKED THREAD: Last night, more than 250 concerned teachers, EAs, school staff, parents, grandparents, and community members joined us for the #SafeSchoolsNow Town Hall on Zoom to express their concerns about opening schools this September. (1/10)
People are worried. They’re upset. They’re frustrated.

Parents haven’t seen the robust planning they need to feel comfortable sending their kids back into the classroom. (2/10)
Teachers, EAs, and staff haven’t gotten the resources they need to do their jobs safely. Those with health issues and immuno-compromised loved ones aren’t sure if they should be headed back at all. (3/10)

Parents, teachers and kids are worried, and they are looking for a plan that gives them the confidence they need to return to school. Instead, they got the worst plan in Canada from this Sask. Party government…
...and a minister trying to pass the buck to school divisions that were already struggling with tough budget decisions. This government needs to take responsibility and come up with a real plan, instead one that’s failing the test and passing the buck. #skpoli #covid19sk #sasked

THREAD: Today we’re calling on the Sask. Party government to get serious about plans to reopen schools in September.

We’ve laid out seven essential requirements for a safe back-to-school plan. #skpoli #sasked

It’s so important that we get this right. The first priority for the safe reopening of schools during the pandemic period has to be the safety of children, teachers and education staff.
Health Minister Reiter has failed to manage the pandemic effectively, with inadequate testing, inadequate preparation, and no clear plan for safe school reopening. This has left parents flying blind as they prepare to send their kids back to school.
