I don't know about you, but we’re tracking 22 active lawsuits about new voter suppression bills passed so far this year. And it feels like a perfect morning to take a look at the cases and what laws they're challenging👇🧵
🐗In Arkansas, @lwvarkansas is suing over 4 new laws: #Act736, #Act973, #Act249 and #Act728. The laws require signature matching on mail ballots, cuts the time frame to return an absentee ballot, enforces stricter ID rules and bans line warming. democracydocket.com/cases/arkansas…
☀️Over in Florida, 4 lawsuits are challenging #SB90.

In the first lawsuit, @LWVFlorida, @BlackVotersMtr, @LULAC and @ActiveRetirees claim that the restrictions on drop boxes, mail voting, line warming and more in #SB90 violate the 1st and 14th Amendments. democracydocket.com/cases/florida-…

88 #Georgia GOP operatives used lists created by True the Vote out of #Texas to challenge the votes of 364,000 Georgians.

True the Vote's major funder is #Wisconsin's Bradley Foundation, the new #KochBros, who've dedicated $2 billion to right-wing causes.
True the Vote's 88 Georgia proxies had originally challenged the counting of these voters' ballots in December, just three weeks before the Georgia Senate run-off race. ajc.com/politics/eligi…
Many of these voters had already mailed in their ballots and were unaware of the attempt to prevent their counting.

The DOJ’s voting rights suit against Georgia does not address the parts of GA’s new law allowing a GOP takeover of bipartisan county election boards. Thankfully, a suit filed by @MarilynRMarks1’s nonprofit @CoalitionGoodGv does address them. #gapol 1/

If Georgia’s new county election board takeover provisions concern you, pls support @CoalitionGoodGv, which is the only organization challenging them in court. Otherwise, we will likely be stuck with those provisions. Note that @ReverendWarnock is up for re-election in 2022. 2/

There are now 8 lawsuits challenging Georgia's voter suppression bill (SB202), including the new DOJ lawsuit.
"We are the only one addressing what we think is the most dangerous provision of SB202, the [election board] takeover provisions." - @MarilynRMarks1 #SB202 #gapol 1/

How can the Republicans get away with challenging 364,000 #Georgia voters on totally bogus grounds? #SB202 has another poisonous clause to deal with that...
Counties, who previously had final say over voter rolls and the counting of ballots, must now accept the challenges. If not, the State Elections Board can dismiss local voting officials. #Georgia #SB202 gregpalast.com/uncovered-ille…
The newly constituted state board is, according to the new law, under the control of Governor Brian Kemp and legislative leaders, all Republicans.

A private group called True the Vote out of Texas got 88, mostly Republican party operatives, to file challenges to block the counting of ballots cast by 364,000 Georgia voters — that’s over a third of a million votes! #SB202 soundcloud.com/user-835943867…
They are doing it under a little-noticed provision of the new restrictive voting law, #SB202, which allows any citizen of #Georgia to challenge an unlimited number of voters.
Under the auspices of this law, we found one super-challenger, Pamela Reardon, who personally challenged the right to vote of 32,379 Georgians. gregpalast.com/364000-voters-…

A little-noticed provision in #Georgia’s new voting restriction law, #SB202, threatens the rights of 364,000 voters.
The new provision signed into law in March allows private Georgia citizens to challenge an “unlimited” number of other voters’ ballots. #SB202 gregpalast.com/uncovered-ille…
The result is that hundreds of thousands of voters individually targeted by a conservative group from Texas may not have their ballots counted in next year’s crucial US Senate race and the expected re-match for the Governorship between #StaceyAbrams and incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp. Image

The secret Heritage video exposed by @ariberman makes abundantly clear what we’ve known all along: despite what Brian Kemp, Barry Fleming, and GOP officials across the country have said, #SB202 and other anti-voting bills are part of a nationwide GOP-led attack on voting rights.
This attack has been engineered by the far-right Heritage Foundation to disenfranchise voters of color in response to the Big Lie surrounding the 2020 election.
Heritage is, at this very moment, conspiring with Republican state legislators in states like Texas, where voter suppressors are finalizing bills behind closed doors.

Less than an hour after its passage by the Arizona State Senate, Governor @DougDucey rushed to sign SB 1485, a devastating anti-voter bill which could remove over 125,000 voters--more than 30,000 of whom are Latino--from Arizona’s highly popular Permanent Early Voting List. (1/6)
The newly-signed #SB1485 is one of over 400 proposed anti-voter bills across the country stemming from an election cycle with historical turnout of Black, brown, and young voters. (2/6)
These actions are a direct and wide-ranging assault on democracy that spans across 48 states from Arizona to New Hampshire, and from Michigan to Texas to Georgia, and demands a response from all stakeholders in America. Silence cannot be an option. (3/6)

As Republicans try to defend #SB202, county officials are decrying how the voter suppression bill will reduce voting access and increase cost to taxpayers. The latest criticism comes from Gwinnett, where drop boxes will be reduced from 23 to 6. #gapol gwinnettdailypost.com/local/gwinnett…
Gwinnett County is Georgia’s second-largest county and one of the most diverse in the state. The provisions in this bill disproportionately burden voters of color, who heavily relied on access to absentee voting and ballot drop boxes to cast their votes in 2020 and 2021.
As Gwinnett’s elections director notes, #SB202 also imposes restrictive ID requirements for absentee ballots and limits the timeframe for requesting absentee ballots.

The result? Gwinnett will need to buy more voting machines and split precincts at taxpayer expense.

DAILY #SB202 FACT CHECK OF THE DAY-- #1

The Sec. of State's (unauthorized) absentee ballot application portal has ended. #SB202 does not permit it. (And that's good!)

The new law requires pen and ink signatures on applications, and that they go to the county office. 1/
2/ It's interesting that the law requires the SOS to set up a secure way for voters to electronically transmit those application forms to the counties. We cannot imagine what that system would entail for 159 counties to install. Lots of 💰💰💰!
3/ Why do we @CoalitionGoodGv think that is good that the portal has ended?
The great amount of sensitive personal information on the new #SB202 ballot application form simply makes it unsafe to send it via the SOS portal.

Hidden in the 95 pages of #Georgia’s #SB202 is a little provision that allows any voter in the state to challenge any other voter and their right to vote in the state — in unlimited numbers.
In 2020, when True the Vote, a Texas group founded by Tea Party crusader Catherine Engelbrecht, challenged the right of 364,541 Georgians to cast ballots, county elections boards rejected the challenges, noting that the numbers were too huge to be credible.
But, under the new law, the State Board of Elections can remove a county board if it doesn’t — in the State’s opinion — rule properly on these challenges.
And who will make up the State Board?

Dear @MLB : I am a GA resident. I support a decision to move the All-Star game to another state. @GovKemp and the @GaHouseHub @GASenateGOP have passed a draconian piece of legislation that allows them to take over local boards of elections if they don’t like election 1)
results. The @GaHouseHub passed legislation to punish @Delta on fuel taxes when Delta FINALLY made it clear it did not support this type of voter suppression law. Those are the actions of a mafia state, not one that listens and responds to the will of people. Who knows 2)
how they will threaten @CocaCola ? Give breaks to @pepsi to locate here? However they can punish those supporting democracy, they will do it. Please join these two corporations in telling @GaRepublicans they do not have sole sovereignty in how GA government operates 3)

To understand how this mass attack on voting rights will work, we have to go back to Dec 21, just before the Georgia Senate runoffs, when True the Vote challenged the right of 364,541 Georgians to cast ballots... #SB202 gregpalast.com/hidden-horrors…
County elections boards rejected the challenges, noting that the numbers were too huge to be credible.

One voter can challenge another if they have personal knowledge that the other voter is a fraud. The local shills used by True the Vote knew nothing of those they challenged.
But #SB202 specifically authorizes unlimited challenges and True the Vote is crowing that Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger has virtually invited them to challenge more voters. gregpalast.com/hidden-horrors…

With #SB202 in Georgia and similar voting restriction bills across the country, the business community's response has been untenable. It’s time for action.

Read my @USATODAY op-ed on how corporations can protect voting rights— and what you can do to help:
usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
Corporations must:
1. Speak out forcefully against voter suppression bills
2. Urge Congress to pass the For The People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
3. Help voters get the ID they need

Go to stopjimcrow2.com for information on how to join the fight.
As a Black person, a Southerner, and an American, I respect and defend the right to boycott. But the communities most targeted by #SB202 would be most hurt by a boycott of Georgia. Bring your business to Georgia and, if you’re already here, stay and fight. Stay and vote. #gapol
