🧵Why Abortion Remains Legal in Every State: An SBC Case Study

The first abolitionist resolution was at the 2021 #SBC annual meeting. The Resolutions Committee declined it, but the messengers voted overwhelmingly to bring it to the floor over Nathan Finn's objections. (1/16) Image
I was in the room and would estimate that 85-90% of the messengers voted to override the committee. In years of observing SBC annual meetings, I have never seen the platform overruled by the messengers by such an overwhelming margin. (2/16)
That night, Bart Barber and other SBC leaders made impassioned pleas on social media to messengers asking them to oppose the resolution on the floor the next day. (3/16)

🧵The Abolitionist Movement is at the SBC Annual Meeting once again! This will be a running thread of Tuesday's events which relate to abolitionism. Image
As background, our resolution was not submitted by the usual means this year because of an error on the SBC submission website. They said resolutions were due by May 30th when resolutions were actually due May 29th.
@Jonathan_Howe refused to fix the mistake, so here we are with a resolution that hasn't been considered having to motion to override their errors.

🧵🧵Today Southern Baptists will choose between two presidential candidates with drastically different views on the SBC's sexual abuse crisis, among other things. But it actually goes much deeper than that. Allow me to explain: #SBC23
Two notes:

1) SBC presidents have very restrained power - they're not popes. But they are a good gauge of how Southern Baptists are thinking about themselves/the future. #SBC23

2) SBC presidents are elected annually, but almost always go unchallenged for their second/final term
But this year, incumbent Bart Barber has a challenger - and one all-too familiar to abuse survivors/advocates (more on that later). Barber was elected in '22 after a historic report that outlined 20 years of mishandled/downplayed abuse by leaders. #sbc23

2/25 What follows is a brief history of Article III and its role in determining who is eligible to send messengers to the SBC Annual Meeting, by being considered an organization or church in friendly cooperation with the SBC.
3/25 Since the establishment of the SBC's Constitution, Article III has dictated who can send messengers to the SBC Annual Meeting. What we know now is not how it began, nor how the SBC operated for the first 85 years of its history.
