Eek! We've been so busy studying the two biggest estuaries in the US, we almost forgot about #EstuariesWeek
As part of the #FoulingProject we are collecting samples from marinas around both #ChesBay and #SFBay scientist sitting on a dock...scientist sitting on a dock...
We then take them back to the labs at @SmithsonianEnv and #SERCWest @EOS_Center and process the panels with a coarse identification of the invertebrates that settle on them and take vouchers and samples for DNA analysis.

Depending on location in the bay, the panels can look very different and contain different assemblages of organisms. #InvertebratesRule #FoulingProject #EstuariesWeek #ChesBay fouling panel with barnacle...fouling panel with encrusti...

The encrusting #bryozoan (Watersipora sp.) is giving our taxonomists a headache! Through genetics, we've discovered what we thought was one species is actually MULTIPLE & they cannot be identified by morphological characters alone! #InvasiveSpecies #NISAW (1/6) Image
One species, Watersipora subtorquata complex, is wide spread as an #InvasiveSpecies across the globe. However, we have a poor understanding of its native region since it has been so often confused with several other species! #InvasiveSpeciesWeek #NISAW (2/6) Image
To make things even MORE confusing, there are multiple clades of the Watersipora subtorquata species! A clade is a group of organisms with the a common ancestor on its family tree. #InvasiveSpeciesWeek #NISAW (3/6) Image

#SERCWest scientists graced the cover of the @sfchronicle yesterday morning talking about their recent article on the freshwater die-off of #invasivespecies and parts of the fouling community! Front page of Jan 16, 2017 ...
“If you’re a manager interested in managing invasive species, you could look at this as an opportunity... Now you have a clean slate. It’s time to take aggressive management action.” -Dr. Andy Chang

@scienmag @WilliamsMystic @mccullermi @MLMLmarinesci @jcanningclode Our @TempleUniv and @stri_panama collaboration on a #PredationExp produced this paper on how excluding some predators makes invertebrates susceptible to abiotic shifts.
