1/9 The economic top-institute @DIW_Berlin in Germany brought out a new study “Expansion #nuclear power without technical and economic basis”. diw.de/documents/publ… @CKemfert
A little thread about some unsurprising, but for some maybe remarkable findings. Image
2/9 Unsurprising is the conclusion that #nuclear has priced itself out of the market. Construction costs of current generation III+ would have to be reduced with 2/3 in order to maintain the global 10% market share in power production. But those costs are still increasing.
3/9 #SMRs of the light-water type would need production units of several thousands (per design!) to break even their disadvantage of scale, and that would need global harmonisation of #nuclear regulation. Dreams, dreams…

☢️it doesn't help the nuclear power 'debate' that the industry can be very "loose with the truth".

eg. 1: @NuScale_Power gives clear impression its product is available now — though it won't be fully licensed before 2024/5, with pilot plant *maybe* 2030.

eg. 2: @SmartEnergy1 claims that the nuscale modules in their proposed #CFPP project have flexibility to ramp up/down to complement renewables — yet project investors have been advised recent design choices limit load following capability.

eg. 3: @SmartEnergy1 claims the LCoE of their #CFPP project is US$58/MWh… neglecting to mention that this is a *target* assuming a $1.4bn grant, PTC subsidy and concessional finance.

real cost will likely be closer to $85/MWh, maybe higher.

11 March 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the #Fukushima nuclear accident. Due to Fukushima, Germany reinstated in 2011 the nuclear phase-out decided in 2000, after a short 10-month-period of abandoning it - and the #Energiewende became political consensus. A thread on FAQs: /1
To start: Where do we currently stand in the #nuclear phase-out in DE? Since 2000, 13 nuclear power plants have been shut down, 11 of which since 2011. Six more will follow by the end of 2022. So far, we have achieved a good half of the nuclear phase-out. /2
Now to the FAQs:
(1) How has the share of nuclear power changed since 2011? The share of #nuclear power in the #electricity mix in DE has halved from 22% (2010) to 11% (2020), while the share of #renewables has more than doubled from 17% (2010) to a full 45% (2020). /3

With the opportunity to engage and influence Draft #PCN guidance, I will do a full twitter thread on each aspect of the new Service Spec!

The aim is to be objective, so there will be no screaming etc!

Why on twitter
1. I would like it to be public
2. Easy to share images
Spec ONE - Structured Medicine Reviews #PCN
As a concept SMRs are a positive initiative, polypharmacy should be addressed.
The draft assumes that the SMRs will be delivered in principle by Clinical Pharmacists. Funding for the post is available via PCN monies therefore, should not impact GP workload.
