I have my students watch @micheleflournoy's 2019 Drell lecture & wrestle with @josef_joffe's hub and spokes concept for the current international order. Watching the response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, points both make have real salience. 1/
Despite all the hype about China's rise and multipolarity, the U.S. still sits at the central node of the global economy & when united with key partners in Europe & Asia, can "excommunicate" even a major country from that system. Moscow gambled on its indispensability ... 2/
to the world economy to shield itself, a gamble that so far has not paid off. China's willingness to shield Russia has also been far more hesitant that Russia expected (one of my "Vladimir's Delusions"). 3/

🧵 on Biden's gaslighting campaign during #SOTU2022.
"Last year COVID-19 kept us apart. This year we are finally together again."

COVID-19 didn't keep people apart. Democratic Party lockdowns and mandates did.
"We spent months building a coalition of other freedom-loving nations from Europe and the Americas to Asia and Africa to confront Putin. I spent countless hours unifying our European allies."

Joe Biden didn't unify anyone, Europe were leading the way on the response.

So I'm going to respond to the last #SOTU2022 I'll be watching from DC for a while, noting if immigration pops up in any way, shape, or form
It’s surprising how Trump’s Buy American, Hire American executive order served as one of the principal instruments to restrict immigration and showed where the Public Charge rule would go, something I explored in this 2018 @BPC_Bipartisan report bipartisanpolicy.org/report/restric…
This solid piece from @nicolenarea provides an overview of literature on how immigration can help address inflation and fill labor shortages vox.com/platform/amp/b…

A sea of blue and yellow in support of Ukraine is filling the Capitol chamber
#SOTU2022
Notably, no one will talk to Lauren Boebert. Just walking by without acknowledgement
If the GOP doesn't fill those seats in this time of war in Europe, this will send a dangerous message to Putin.

1/ Ahead of #SOTU2022 I want to reiterate what I’ve said for years: Energy independence has and will continue to be one of America's most critical vulnerabilities. A real and urgent national security issue.
2/ In less than a week, we’ve seen WTI/crude >$100/barrel, gas >$5/gallon in CA, and a natural gas crisis emerging in Europe. Post-Gulf War, we invested in medium-term solutions like domestic shale. This was a good stop-gap but not a long-term solution.
3/ Hands down the fastest and most realistic solution is solar. We need to deploy solar across the country and accelerate the mass transition to clean energy NOW.
