SQA chief executive Fiona Robertson and SQA director of qualifications Gill Stewart about to face questions at @SP_EduSkills. FR making opening statement. Thread starts here. @TesScotland @tes @Emma_Seith #SQa #SQAresults #resultsday2020
Fiona Robertson: Historic school attainment had to form part of the moderation process but other factors also considered. "Schools and colleges were not seen as postcodes at all," she says.
Fiona Robertson: SQA was ready for higher volume of appeals and there has been "misreporting" around that.

THREAD: My thoughts on the announcement this afternoon by the Deputy First Minister @JohnSwinney on the 2020 SQA exam results. #SQAResults

1/10
This is a very welcome decision which will ensure young people in #Scotland who have worked so hard in incredibly difficult circumstances do not lose out based on factors outwith their control, and we should all congratulate them on the grades they have achieved. 2/10
These achievements now provide an opportunity for us to accept even more Scottish-domiciled students to the University of Glasgow @UofGlasgow – particularly those who may come from #WideningParticipation backgrounds @UofGWP – with an increase in places funded by the @scotgov 3/10

#SQAResults Datatilsynet (the Norwegian ICO) has issued an "advance notification" to the International Baccalaureate Organization in respect of the grades awarded to IB students in Norway. The Advance notification is a preliminary stage prior to a final decision being taken. It
gives notice to the IBO that Datatilsynet is considering ordering the rectification of grades awarded. As with other qualification awarding bodies, the IBO faced a situation where examinations were cancelled as a result of COVID-19. They introduced an adjusted process for the
awarding of qualifications. This process consisted of three factors: (1) student coursework; (2) predicted grades from teachers; and (3) "school context". The final factor is essentially similar to what the #SQA did for Scottish exam results. Datatilsynet has taken a provisional

How to sort #sqaresults debacle, an exasperated thread from someone teaching stats for the past 20 years @MrMcEnaney @LucyHunterB @DJohnsonMSP

First principles:
1 no detriment

2 student performance not that of cohort or socio-ec circs should be relevant

1/n
3 assume teachers are capable of professional judgement

4 if estimation errors, assume underestimation is more damaging to prospects

2/
Solutions:
1 whatever modelling produces, if lower than prelims, use prelim mark
2 model exam mark on basis of
a) student's perf across all subjects last 2 years
b) perf in same or similar subjects last 2 years
c) teacher estimated mark
d) available coursework marks

Numbers winning a place at university up. Again. That's a new record.
Well done all!

#SQAresults
And the number from the poorest background - SIMD20 - is up by even more.

A 5% rise overall (all ages) and a stonking 9% increase in 18 year olds!

#SQAresultsday
Looking at numbers getting uni places by SIMD quintile, everyone up, but SIMD1 - poorest - has more than doubled since 2009:

SIMD1 – ⬆️116%
SIMD2 – ⬆️71%
SIMD3 – ⬆️41%
SIMD4 – ⬆️30%
SIMD5 – ⬆️26%

Some changes in methodology over period but central message still holds.
