Excerpts from Robert L. Allen’s book, “Black Awakening in Capitalist America” in relation to the current #StopCopCity movement:

GENOCIDE and the infrastructure for mass imprisonment as a countermeasure against Black rebellion.

The fear of open violence against Black communities dates back generations— since the end of enslavement, the white supremacist State struggled to contend with what they saw as “surplus populations” who needed to be contained, commodified and/or eliminated altogether. Side by side with the welfa...

Atlanta’s main newspaper (owned by Atlanta Police Foundation sponsor Cox Enterprises) finally confirms what’s been public knowledge since January: the DHS ‘violent extremist’ label Georgia Bureau of Investigation says is applied to “Defend the Atlanta Forest” doesn’t even exist.
We noted the falsehood of this claim by Georgia police in our February report about their controversial use of ‘domestic terrorism’ charges against tree-sitters and other #StopCopCity protesters:

unicornriot.ninja/2023/community…
While Cox’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports this as breaking news today, it’s been over 4 months since DHS told @TimothyJPratt, @attackerman & the Washington Post it “does not classify or designate any groups as domestic violent extremists”:

Bernice King speaking now about Cop City, speaking about how communities have been excluded from decisionmaking that goes on between corporations and elected officials. #StopCopCity
"This was the second time in three weeks that people came before the City Council...they came with facts in hand...at the end of the day, it was as if 'we're just gonna do this so we can check it off the list and say we've had a listening session with the citizens."
Talking about the anti-democratic nature of how the City Council is treating its residents. "There was no dignity of the process."

Watson oversees the “Police Curriculum” sub-group for the South River Forest Cop City Task Force— he’s very involved in Cop City. Major Watson listed on the ...
Watson was an early member of the notoriously violent & corrupt RED DOG Unit, focused on narcotics.

Anyone who KNOWS about RED DOG knows this is a huge 🚩— it had to be disbanded in 2011.

I'm grateful to be a journalist dedicated to the south. I'm grateful to know that my job is to correct the record as the facist state rises. My love for black people is at the core of why I do this.

Legacy media failed the #StopCopCity movement and I will never forget that.
when protests happen and editors are begging black journalists for bylines and begging for someone to explain away white people guilt. I will remember how legacy media didn't see #StopCopCity as something worth covering as the 2024 election is around the corner.
I will remember how you ignored the Black folks from Atlanta speaking on #StopCopCity and how you will approve profiles on black women “saving democracy” yet again but never covered how the police state took over in the same year.

you are spineless and I won't forget this.

Well, the Atlanta City Council passed $67 million in funding for Cop City, by an 11-4 margin, after over 15 hours of essentially unanimous public comment against it.

Quick thoughts before I go to bed.
This was a historic 24 hours. Absolutely shattered every record of public turnout. Made clear, unequivocally, that Atlanta residents are against Cop City. Over a thousand people turned out, repping many more. Incredibly diverse crew. Everyday Atlantans. Firmly against Cop City.
This vote drives home: there is no democracy in Atlanta. This project most directly impacts those who have no representation on council, and the hundreds/thousands who do have Council representatives were all ignored today.

So yes I will not be going to City Hall tomorrow. No matter what happens I am so incredibly proud of the city that I call home. Everyone has worked their ass off and done so much labor (most of it unseen). I have met so many smart and dedicated people through #StopCopCity
and will forever be proud of what we have accomplished. To everyone who may be discouraged if tomorrow doesn't work out how we want it to, some affirmation is that soon you'll have been organizing so long you won't even remember all of your wins and losses..
instead you'll just focus on the beautiful network of people you've met who you know took time out of their lives to do something to make this world a little more just. We don't work on the city's timeline, and we won't let them make our city a playground

for @MSNBC, I wrote about the arrest of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund organizers, the bipartisan crackdown on protesters in Atlanta, and why everyone––regardless of where you are––should care about the struggle to #StopCopCity.

a couple main points:
msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-…
First, the arrest of long-time bail fund and mutual aid activists is just the latest in the Atlanta and Georgia police's extreme repression of the Stop Cop City movement––from the assassination of Tortuguita to the charging of 42 people with domestic terrorism.
While these arrests of bail fund organizers are a first, "if if history tells us anything, it certainly won’t be the last. Who will be targeted next?" Other bail funds? Abortion funds? Migrant travel funds? Other mutual aid groups?

"I don't find it real impressive" –– the judge regarding the case so far. Says it may be there, but it's not for him to decide at first appearance.
Says they will have to report to pretrial services, can't leave state without permission of pretrial services. Says stay off social media and make no comments about merits of case or people involved on social media.
