In honor of today and tomorrow's #ScholarStrike founded by Dr. Anthea Butler @AntheaButler & co-created by Dr. Kevin Gannon @TheTattooedProf

I am connecting this with everyone who participated in #ShutDownSTEM , #ShutDownAcademia & #Strike4BlackLives 3 months ago!

Let's go🚀1/
When you joined into #ShutDownSTEM & #ShutDownAcademia it is because you were on a #Strike4BlackLives

This is because you were making a commitment to eradicate systemic racism.

This is because you understood you have a role to play.

We need to end this.

Together.

2/
You understood deep down that there is no reason why anyone based on their skin color should undergo this treatment. Losing their lives, loved ones, being profiled by police, subjugated to painful treatment.

You understand deep down that #BlackLivesMatter

As part of our #ScientistSolidarity drive, we've been posting threads on the intersections of science with anti-Blackness, abolition, racial justice, and solidarity over the past few weeks. Here's a handy compilation of all those threads… as another THREAD! 🎉😂
We hope this compilation can be a helpful primer for anyone hoping to learn about/ get involved in efforts to create a more just, equitable, and accountable science that works toward Black liberation & the dismantling of oppressive systems. #BlackLivesMatter #ScienceIsPolitical
To launch the drive, we stated our goals & named some who’ve lost their lives to police violence. We also named our commitment to fighting systemic anti-Blackness as it intersects with transphobia & gender-based violence. #SayTheirNames #RestInPower

As the 1st BW to graduate from Yale astro w a PhD in astrophysics, I was asked to comment on the racist dept emails sent by senior faculty in this @buzzfeednews story. TBH, I wasn't planning to. Not surprising and not worth my time. #BlackintheIvory buzzfeednews.com/article/stepha…
Then I remembered being a student there and watching blatantly racist things happen that I didn't feel like I could or even knew how to speak to. I remember wishing someone would stand up for my right to be there. Very often no one did; certainly not publicly. #BlackintheIvory
I remember vowing that if I ever got power in my field that I wouldn't squander it by only celebrating my scientific expertise, but that I would use it to encourage and create space for folx like me, who cared both abt people and the Universe. Oh hai power... 😎 #BlackintheIvory

Last wk, we discussed how Western science is founded on anti-Blackness. Today, we share how Black ppl across the globe have always been at the forefront of knowledge creation, within/outside of/in resistance to anti-Black dominant institutions of science.
We intentionally couple these threads b/c while it’s important to name and work to dismantle the ways institutional science has exacted violence against Black communities, we need to also know about & celebrate how Black communities have BEEN doing science, BEEN making knowledge.
As a note, this thread is part of our #ScientistSolidarity Drive, calling non-Black scientists to support orgs/funds doing grassroots racial justice & abolition work. We're $800 away from hitting our $6110 match goal! #ScienceIsPolitical #BlackLivesMatter

One issue in equity work is how to center Black voices without making Black people do all the (thankless) work.

Ironically, this as isn't much of an issue in physics, because the problems are so bad that non-Black people HAVE to do the work.
#ShutDownSTEM #Strike4BlackLives
So the key for those of us who want to do the labor without dominating the conversation is to listen to and be guided by the few Black physicists we have. They know what they need and what future students/postdocs/faculty need.
And they've done even more thankless work to compile resources for reading! So go here and read up, then use what you've read to take action:

Feeling really anxious ahead of my dept's #strike4blacklives town hall. A thread:
I hate that we have to work so hard to get white people (and *too many* poc as well) to give a shit. It's why it was important to hold this town hall TODAY, since people might've just called it "a day off" and not done anything to educate themselves
I hate that I have to relive trauma just for the CHANCE that someone listening might understand what systemic racism is like when I tell them some of the shit I've lived through

Thank you to @cosmojellyfish @sheydaipek and Tien-Tien Yu for talking to me about the movement, which was pioneered by a coalition of scientists who have long been doing the work of fighting anti-Black racism in academia, including @IBJIYONGI @iamstarnord.
You can hear more about that work in this @sotrueradio interview with @IBJIYONGI @iamstarnord.

Today is #ShutDownSTEM / #Strike4BlackLives day, so let’s talk about what’s going so wrong in UK physics. Of *all* the physics academics in the UK, 𝟬.𝟭% are Black. (IOP, 2012) iop.org/publications/i…
I'd argue that the anti-Black bias in UK physics starts long before people reach the ivory tower. Bear with me, the data are (a) depressing (b) difficult to come by — in the UK don’t collect/report ethnicity disaggregated data very often.
The IOP (@PhysicsNews) have collected data on the participation of Black students from GCSE to PhD, and compared representation to white students. There's *considerable* evidence that from the age of 15, the UK education system fails Black students. iop.org/publications/i…

I’m so proud of the @uwastro grads + alumni who helped organize and push our department to #ShutDownAcademia and hold a town hall for political education and black liberation during #Strike4BlackLives .
It really shines a light on how much BS it is when faculty say they’re “too busy” to fight for inclusivity+equity. This is a great precedent.
I can’t believe I’ll get to talk to MY ASTRONOMY DEPARTMENT about the wonderful work of @DaneCoTimeBank + @AboutFreedomInc + @TriageUrban

Institutional Western science has stolen knowledge, technology, health, wellness, and life from Black people

Western science owes Black people reparations. A (nonexhaustive) THREAD:

#ScienceIsPolitical
First, let’s preface this thread with a few things. These are just a few of the anti-Black skeletons in institutional science’s closet

There’s a rich literature that goes much deeper and broader than what we’ll mention here, much of which is created by Black scholars
Additionally, we’ll be sharing a longer resource list later, but in this thread we’ll be naming Black scholars whose research is referenced in brackets in each tweet

Hundreds of physicists and other academics are pledging to forgo business as usual on Wednesday to #Strike4BlackLives. It's a day "to give Black academics a break and to give others an opportunity to reflect on their own complicity in anti-Black racism" particlesforjustice.org

In this #TakeAction, we have shared what some of our leadership members will be reading and doing while we #Strike4BlackLives, and as we keep up this work. This list is by no means comprehensive, but rather a place to start. (THREAD) 1/ 500womenscientists.org/updates/2020/6…

Time for an introduction:

My name is Julia (@JuliaVSeidel) and I'm a German PhD candidate in my last year at the University of Geneva 🇨🇭. Like @AstroRickman who was your host two weeks ago, I also work on exoplanets! Here I am at my fav telescope, @ESO's 3.6 m in Chile. Image
I work on the atmospheric characterisation of exoplanets, especially their wind patterns and if you want to know more about that, head to my profile, I pinned a video there on all the things I've been up to in the last few years science wise.
When I'm not working on my research, I do a fair share of #scicomm and try to make academia more accessible for underrepresented groups. So ask me anything about all of these topics!
