‘M31’ Zeltbahn thread inspired by @History1History

The Zeltbahn was one of the most utilitarian items of field equipment used by Germany during #SWW #WW2.

Translating as ‘shelter quarter’ or ‘groundsheet’ it fulfilled a variety of functions for a Landser

1/
The triangular waterproof canvas was reversible camouflaged, (Splintertarn for Heer) for use in spring/summer/autumn.

1 Zeltbahn, 1 wooden pole, 2 steel/bakelite pegs & rope were issued per man.

Primary purposes being groundsheet/tent qtr/rain cape for the individual.

2/
4 men with equipment could then construct a tent.

4 Zeltbahn, 4 wooden poles, 8 pegs & ropes.

Buttoned together it should be taut, with correct buttoning/roping enabling an ‘apron’ to prevent water gathering at the bottom.

A Stahlhelm is used to prevent incoming water.

A short thread about 'doing' #History, and a glimpse of what I am working on.

Step 1: Read translated interview
'After the battle, our company and the Chinese company were ordered to defend the Mawchi road and the Officer-in-Charge was Capt. Thompson of the Bengal Rifles. Jemedar Pan Mya and 16 soldiers were captured fighting the Japanese at Paletwa.'
Step 2: Check out Capt. Thompson
Thompson was not Bengal Rifles, he was 1st Battalion Burma Rifles. Translator or interviewee error? Not to worry. Error found.
