‼️ REMINDER: Families remain locked up by @ICEgov ‼️

Months into the pandemic, 91+ children remain detained in family detention centers. All while #COVID19 has infected more than 140 staff, detained parents & children at Dilley & Karnes.

It’s time to hold ICE accountable. 🧵👇🏾
In JUNE, Federal Judge Gee determined the family detention centers were (& continue to be) “on fire.”

ICE’s continued refusal to #FreeTheFamilies and insistence on bringing even more of them to the detention centers has only fanned the flames.
As legal service providers for detained families, @RAICESTEXAS, @aldea_pjc & #ProyectoDilley have consistently shared info about the realities of family detention with the court.

At 22 Josie fled political persecution from Haiti and is now free! 1/3 Image
Josie's asylum officer made a negative finding. We were able to get the IJ to review & vacate it
Meanwhile Josie became one of over 5k ppl who have contracted CV19 while in ICE prison. Luckily she recovered and is on her way home #SafeAndTogether w/her sponsor. Welcome home! 2/3
Though we are ecstatic to see this smile, it shouldn't take 7 organizations, a case of COVID, and 6 months of her life she can't get back to find freedom and safety in the U.S. We must fix this system #RestoreAsylumNow #EndMPP #AbolishICE 3/3

That's how long our client was imprisoned by ICE. Today he woke up a free man #SafeandTogether w/his family. Thanks to his team legal team that fought like hell for him in immigration & federal courts. We won't stop until we #FreeThemAll. 1/3
Ramon lived in the US for more than 42 years prior to his detention. Being away from his three children and spending so much time in ICE prison took a toll on his mental health. In March he was finally appointed a lawyer through NQRP and ImmDef began representing him. 2/3
Within for months of ImmDef representation, our team won release on bond for Ramon. With the help of @Ic4IJ and @MigrantFreedom his $15K bond was paid in full. Ramon is pictured here with his daughter finally able to embrace after seven years of separation. Welcome home, Ramon!

📢 REMINDER: Today is the court-mandated deadline for ICE to release children who have been held for 20 + days in family detention.

TODAY.

Yet, we've seen no moves from @ICEgov to #FreeTheFamilies Image
It's clear that ICE is not willing to release these children w/ their parents. Had they been, these families would've been free by now.

There is nothing preventing ICE from complying. No requirement that they detain families & NOTHING stopping them from releasing them RIGHT NOW.
But we expect the gov't to continue violating the Flores agreement. @ICEgov rather separate families again than do the right thing & #FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether.

So we need your continued support. Take action & continue to demand ICE #FreeTheFamilies raicestexas.org/take-action-de…

🚨 BREAKING: @ICEgov's deadline to release children from family detention centers was tomorrow. It has now been pushed back 10 more days.

This is unacceptable. #COVID19 is running rampant.

ICE can choose to release BOTH children + parents NOW. #FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether
It's obvious that ICE doesn't want to do the right thing and release these families together so they're prolonging this situation in order to create a path that would finalize a permanent family separation policy.

Cruelty has always been the point.
Your voices matter now more than ever. Continue to take action and call on Congress to demand that @ICEgov #FreeTheFamilies #SafeAndTogether

🚨 URGENT: A muslim family of 4 is about to be separated at Karnes Detention Facility & the dad taken to adult detention.

We need your help to STOP this from happening. FAST.
ICE has scheduled to separate them at 12pm CST.
ICE has stated that the reason Mr. F* will continue to be detained is because he presents a “security risk” if released. That conclusion is unwarranted.

Tajikstan and Russia have a documented history of persecuting muslim minorities with false accusations of extremism.
Moreover, Mr. & Mrs. F*'s faith & religious beliefs prohibit her from staying in the home of adult males w/o the presence of her husband bc she's a married woman.

She can't be released w/her children alone especially bc she's 4 months pregnant.

Mr F* needs to be released too.

#GoodNews 🎉 to brighten your day☀️

Ricardo*, who'd been detained with his son for 121 days at Karnes Family Detention Center were both finally released on Friday. Let this clip be a testament that ICE has the discretion to #FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether
A little backstory: Ricardo* was living with his wife & 2 year old son in San Antonio, Texas prior to being arrested.

He'd been going to his ICE check-ins and missed a court date he didn't know about so at his next check-in, he was arrested & taken to Karnes with his older son.
A few months ago we submitted a request for parole on behalf of the family which was subsequently denied.

In the reason for denial, ICE stated that they could not determine that neither Jose nor his son were flight risks despite their strong community ties.

ICE has now updated Judge Gee on their progress in creating a formal - soon to be legal - policy to separate parents & children.

What does this mean?
ICE can finalize & implement this separation protocol before July 17th & it'll be PERMANENT. Image
Once a family separation policy is finalized, ICE can use it to either:

1) take kids away from their parents
OR
2) keep kids in detention indefinitely

ICE has gone 5 years without formalizing a separation policy, no need to do it NOW during a pandemic.
We're calling on Congress to make sure ICE releases families together now AND that they commit to a permanent family unity policy.

Congress needs to demand @ICEgov #FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether

Trump & ICE are moving closer and closer to their vision of white supremacy.

Here's some of what's going on JUST THIS WEEK:
1) ICE is planning on using a recent ruling to pull children away from their families. They can #FreeTheFamilies at any time, but instead, they choose this:

2) ICE is starting a "Citizen's Academy" in Chicago to train people on "firearms familiarization" and "targeted arrests".

They want to show civilians how to target, intimidate, and harm immigrants. This is, simply put, Nazi shit.

Did you know that 97% of formerly separated families in Karnes had sponsors waiting for them?

Their detention was costly - not only in terms of human suffering, but also in $$ spent. ICE spent $11M+ to imprison families after the gov't put them through the torture of separation.
Our new report, "The U.S. Government Kidnapped My Son" 👇🏾 finds that both detention & separation are harmful to children. And yet, ICE is now positioned to separate families again.

@ICEgov has ALWAYS been able to release both parents AND children. Cruelty has been the point in not doing so.

Stop that cruelty. Contact Congress & demand that ICE #FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether.

Contrary to popular belief, not all families separated under Zero Tolerance in '18 were freed after they were reunited. Instead, they faced indefinite imprisonment in Karnes.

Learn more about this in our new report "The U.S. Government Kidnapped My Son." raicestexas.org/mslreport?ms=t…
In the report, one dad recalls: “[My son] would cry for his mother, that he wants to be with his mother. And [officers] would drug us to not feel anything for the family. I did not know how to console [my son] because I was also imprisoned. I couldn’t communicate with him.”
“We were without communication [w/the outside world]; we were kidnapped. I couldn’t even feel like a father, one cannot do anything while imprisoned & without release.”

#GoodNews 🎉
A father & son detained at Karnes Family Detention Center were released today after 100+ days locked up, after one of our attorneys successfully got their case re-opened.

This is a reality that @ICEgov can make happen for ALL families.
#FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether
Small backstory: This family had been kidnapped in Mexico and received a removal order for missing their court day. Why did they miss court? .....because they were kidnapped.

This is what we mean by cruelty being the point. #AbolishICE
The family is now safe with their sponsor but let this be a reminder that there are still families who face separation, deportation, or prolonged detention.

Thank you to our partners @SSFTexas & @SA_Stands for rallying outside of Karnes today to demand they #FreeThemAll

🚨 After last week's court decision to release children from family detention centers w/o their parents, we need to remind folks there are real, irreparable effects to family separation.

That's why we're releasing a comprehensive new report, "The U.S. Gov't Kidnapped My Son."
At the height of Trump’s “Zero Tolerance” policy, RAICES worked w/families who were eventually reunited after suffering Family Separation 1.0 in the summer of 2018.

The report details the experiences of these families & their subsequent imprisonment at the Karnes facility.
One father described his first time speaking to his son on the phone after they were separated:

“The only thing he told me was ‘why did you leave me?’ Those were his first words when he heard me and it made me cry.”

It seems we need to make something clear:

These children are currently held in FAMILY detention centers. They are not alone. They are WITH THEIR PARENTS. They DO NOT need sponsors.

What they need is to be released with their family. #FreeThemAll
cnn.com/2020/06/26/pol…
We say this because we’ve received many well-intentioned but problematic asks around how to sponsor children being released.

We feel it’s necessary to point out that most of these asks have from white folks.
It gets even more problematic when this is the case 👇🏽

#GoodNews? Hardly.
While a federal judge ordering the release of children in family detention centers by July 17th seems like a great move...there’s a small caveat many may have to be reminded of.

🧵👇🏽
nytimes.com/2020/06/26/us/…
Last month, ICE began family separation 2.0, in which they gave parents the difficult choice of 1) staying indefinitly in detention w/their children during a pandemic or 2) separating families by only releasing children alone, to sponsors & keeping parents locked up.
“Family residential centers are on fire and there is no more time for half measures.”

This is what Judge Gee said, referring to the spread of #COVID19 in family detention centers. Because YES the virus has already spread there.

🧵THREAD: We joined with the @bailfundnetwork & its 32 member funds as well as the @HispanicCaucus to ask @DHSgov to open the online bond payment portal for families & community organizations to pay bond for immigrants in detention.
While we continue to advocate for the release of everyone in ICE detention, release and parole has been slow to nonexistent, family members and community bond funds are working around the clock to release individuals through the payment of bond.
During the #COVID19 pandemic, asking family members & community bond fund volunteers to continue to post bond in-person defies all public health advice.

In the past week, members of the @bailfundnetwork have had to deal with office closures in NYC, Miami & southern California.

Immigrants in detention centers across the country are being held in substandard conditions & in times of crisis this just tends to worsen.

Quarantines of these places are of no use when people cannot socially distance.

@ICEgov must #FreeThemAll. Image
Families continue to be separated thanks to ICE raids, which have NOT stopped, contrary to what the agency has said.

People are already in fear of the virus. @ICEgov must stop torturing the immigrant community and halt all raids. Image

Isabel is in detention with her husband and two daughters. One of them is 8 years old and one is 2 years old. Isabel is 6 months pregnant.

Yes, that’s right. We’re locking up a two year old baby for the crime of seeking safety.
These stories we are telling you are from the Karnes Detention Center in Texas. It is managed by the private prison company, @TheGEOGroup.
Isabel’s story is one of many we’ve heard. We learned today of the first confirmed case of the virus in a NJ detention center.

Some 38,000 people are imprisoned in immigrant detention right now, including thousands of mothers, fathers, and children.

All of them are at risk.

I have been sick for 9 days now. I’m still waiting on the test results but am currently presumed positive for #COVIDー19. I cannot imagine dealing with this while living in one of the makeshift camps or shelters along the border, and I don’t even have much respiratory distress.
The US must end MPP and immediately parole asylum seekers into the US so they can be #SafeandTogether with their families.
Thanks all! 🖤🖤🖤 I’ll likely be OK. I only said something because if the US doesn’t start paroling people in, outbreaks in these spaces are inevitable, and I honestly cannot fathom feeling like this and not being safe and cozy in my room with healthcare access, support, etc.
