We received an email yesterday from the mother of an injured cyclist, letting us know that her son had been hit by a bus while riding his bike on Sarnia Road. She told us the following:
On Monday, Oct.3 around noon her son, a Western student, was biking to school on Sarnia Road. He was riding on the mostly empty sidewalk, but as he got closer to the school there were a lot of pedestrians, so he merged onto the road.
He rode very close to the curb, and then was hit by a bus. He was clipped by the mirror, and ended up with a broken arm. The bus driver, emerging from the bus, asked him why he wasn't riding on the sidewalk; the student told him to call for help.

THREAD: It's a lot easier - and friendlier - to design our streets so that it is difficult to make a life-threatening mistake on them, rather than enforcing them 24/7 - an unsustainable goal. #safestreets
When a street is designed like a dragstrip, drivers will use it as such. That's why it's impossible to enforce our way out of speeding.

But by using the psychology of design (check out Vox's Norman Doors video), we can create streets that automatically encourage safe driving.
So what does safe design look like? Well, it can look like this raised crosswalk, which encourages drivers to slow down where people are likely to cross.

These are also easier for people using wheelchairs and our elders to navigate; there isn't a slope to roll down or trip on.

Hey @NACTO #NACTO19. Before you fawn over Toronto's leadership, we have seen MANY pedestrians preventably killed in recent weeks. This woman, killed yesterday, might have been someone's mom. cp24.com/news/woman-str…

Imagine sitting for days by the side of a dangerous arterial, holding a sign hoping for the hit-and-run driver who killed your vibrant, beloved daughter to come forward? Knowing there is still no crosswalk planned to address the TTC desire line? #NACTO19 thestar.com/news/gta/2019/…

I had an epic #bikenyc day yesterday, until I got doored and knocked off my bike for the first time. I’m fine, just angry that a For Hire Vehicle passenger’s carelessness and bad infrastructure hurt me and could’ve killed me. 1/
I was riding home from a friend’s bday dinner in the Village, heading east on Houston Street to 1st Ave, which I take up to the Queensboro Bridge. On the last block, I rode in the “bike lane” between the vehicles poised to turn right and the cars positioned to go straight. 2/
As I was riding through the stopped vehicles, about to make my left onto 1st Ave, an SUV passenger in the going-straight lane (far away from the curb) flung the right rear door open into me and knocked me down in the “bike lane.” 3/
