Few dozen cases of local dengue transmission, more than has been observed before (bit of a theme for #infectiousdiseases in the recent past...)

We trained healthcare staff on recognising scabies & other skin infections. Over 6-month period, study clinics recorded and reviewed 385 cases of skin infections. There were 45 diagnosed scabies cases (3rd most common skin infection, behind bacterial #dermatitis and #tinea) (/2)
We also assessed how far the patient travelled from home to clinic. There was a lot of ‘bypassing’ (i.e. they did not attend their nearest health centre, they travelled further than in theory they needed to) (/3)

When some people go to have a bath, they just pour water on their bodies, with or without soap, & pay little attention to cleaning the dirtiest & most vulnerable parts of their skin.
You need to do this to keep your skin clean & prevent lots of skin diseases.

The back of ears & ridge in front of the ears are often ignored when most people bath.
Some people come out of the bathroom but you still see dirt around these areas.
They are exposed to the outside & can harbor germs, dust & dirt.

When I started working on #scabies outbreaks in #carehomes some of my colleagues thought it was a weird, marginal interest. Now with #COVID19 it's changing. Everyone's realising that infection is a big deal in these #EndOfLife settings.
#Carehomes for older people are hard to study. Residents often have #dementia, staff are run off their feet, #consent to research is difficult - brilliant colleagues including @MedVetAcarology sorted this academic.oup.com/phe/article-ab…
Life expectancy on entry to a #carehome for older people is typically 8 months - these settings are largely #LastHomes. Everyone needs a plan for what will and won't happen for the common things likely to make them ill or deteriorate. #CPR probably not part of it

What exactly is scabies? Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis is the technical name of this parasitic mite that burrows into the skin (itchy yet?😆). It is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and has humbled many a #dermatologist.
It has a very characteristic look under the scope!

On exam, most know the classic distribution: interdigital spaces (pic1). However, other places to look include the areola, axilla, and umbilicus. In kids, the lesions tend to be all over the place (perhaps because they aren't as good at scratching them off! - pic2).
