1/ The darkest tyrannies in history commonly treat those under them as mere human cattle. They act to sunder that most precious bond of a parent's care for their offspring & render the family a mere breeding unit.

This violates all ethical & religious precepts.
#COVID19
2/ Since barely afflicted there is NO science behind this (quite the converse given evidence that children may help boost adult immunity in the households they share), but even "#science" is NOT the point.
This is a totalitarian outrage which no-one with any morality can condone.
3/ To be forced by the state to submit our precious little ones to this insane medical experiment in a desperate attempt to make up for its obvious shortcomings and so to spare its political enablers recrimination or embarrassment is beyond abhorrent.

This is an all hands on deck moment. In-person school is starting. W/ the #DeltaVariant, even w/ the majority of the relevant strategies in place, itā€™s going to be difficult to prevent transmission in our schools (linkedin.com/pulse/in-persoā€¦). šŸ§µ1/

In an elementary classroom w/ unvaxxed students, generally ASHRAE compliant ventilation/filtration, the addition of (1) portable HEPA filter unit, & theoretical 100% mask wearing (double layer cloth mask), max exposure is only about 1.2 hrs before an additional student... 2/
is potentially infected at full occupancy (assuming 1 infected student is present).

Accounting for the potential reality of younger kids not always effectively wearing their masks (50% mask wearing), the max exposure is under an hour before an additional student is infected. 3/

We need to talk about the pediatric bed situation in the USA.

Because things are going to get really bad, real fast, unless people doing things to stop it.

This is an important thread. Please share.

Letā€™s start with the numbers:

In the last year that we have published data on (2018), there were 27,500 staffed pediatric beds and 5,400 pediatric ICU (PICU) beds in the USA.

Pediatric hospitals usually operate around 80% capacity, with significant variation during the week and season. They are used to small surges that are expected with seasonal changes in diseases, particularly RSV. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/Pā€¦ 3/n Image

NEW | A National Emergency: How #COVID19 Is Fueling Unrest in the #US

Analyzing the past year of @ACLEDINFO data, our latest report reveals the full scope of the pandemicā€™s impact on #American protest patterns for the first time.

Key findings ā–¶ļø bit.ly/3rkNZGR ImageImageImage
Trends in pandemic-related demonstrations are closely correlated with trends in #COVID19 cases, with spikes in unrest matching infection waves reported throughout 2020. Image
ACLED data show that the majority of these demonstrations have been organized around five main drivers: the risks faced by health workers, the safety of prisoners and ICE detainees, anti-restriction mobilization, the eviction crisis, and school closures. Image

All #schoolreopening 8th March while infection rates still too high and schools remain a vector for transmission. Why not wait 3 weeks, with Easter holidays starting 29th, which would have given 5 weeks to get infection rates really low and all over 50s vaccinated. #covid
In the time since lockdown was announced nothing new has been put in place in schools to mitigate Transmission. Possibly testing but that had to be withdrawn because itā€™s not for asymptotic cases and should only be done by trained personnel. @BorisJohnson incompetence again.
Today the Chief Scientific Advisor did say improvements had been made in schools - more mask wearing and greater ventilation. Iā€™m not sure which schools heā€™s talking about, but I donā€™t know a school that has increased ventilation. Itā€™s prohibitively expensive in windowless rooms

The debate around #schoolsreopening during #Covid19 has been largely grounded in conjecture to this point - we're proud to contribute DATA to the discussion - a thread from our experiences testing an entire K-12 school population from August thru December.medrxiv.org/content/10.110ā€¦
2)Kids do contract+transmit #COVID19, but rates of illness when they are IN school are LOWER than when OUT of school. Suggests that children/communities may be at lower risk when in school -poss due to mitigation measures +controlled environment not possible when out of school
3) Reproductive rate (R-naught) within the school setting was <0.5

It's the eve of a new school year. The younger one is excited. He's read "la liste des fournitures scolaires" and packed shield, headphones, sanitizer, pencil case, tissue box.
Jumps into bed, asleep within minutes.

As I tuck in the older one, she whispers: "I'm nervous." 1/7
I'm nervous too.

"What are you nervous about?"

I'm expecting the usual - new school, people, routines - and reassure her. As a local school, she'll easily develop friendships in our neighborhood, which she missed in previous years.

"What about COVID? Will it be there?"

2/7
Her fears are about transmission, as source + as contact.

About bringing it home. About sharing with friends.
And about getting something WAY worse than cooties.

Maybe even at the level of poopy pants, but I don't explore this.

So little is in her control these days.

Donā€™t understand why Lecce and @fordnation need to operate at the board level. If they could establish a high/low risk plan for high school reopening based on geography, surely they could have *within* the TDSB for K-8. @TOPublicHealth has already demonstrated COVID inequities.
We know the hardest hit areas in Toronto and those less heavily affected. We know which schools exist in those respective areas. Why canā€™t we admit that all schools arenā€™t equal in the TDSB and localize the approach to #SchoolReopening? #edutwitter #covidontario
Also, publicly release data on max class sizes above grade 3 per school. Itā€™s relevant to the Sick Kids guidance, there are no hard caps but rather board averages, and anecdotally high income/low density areas obscure high class sizes in lower income/high density school zones.

Inadequate testing and tracing, unrealistic expectations of school cleanliness and student hygiene, and ultimately impractical solutions for things like transportation, lunch and sudden outbreaks are why SCHOOLS SHOULD BE DISTANCE LEARNING UNTIL JANUARY. #SchoolReopening (1/5)
This would allow districts, local and state governments to focus on providing services for those families for whom distance learning is a hardship, impractical due to work situation or student accommodations or needs. (2/5)
Districts could provide distance learning pods made up of small groups of students in school facilities. These could be staffed by teachers or educators who are low risk or volunteer. Similar to this idea... (3/5) nytimes.com/2020/07/20/opiā€¦

Many educators & parents that Iā€™ve spoken to are feeling extremely anxious & worried about #backtoschool.

Hopefully the measures announced today by Premier Doug Ford will be supported with adequate funding needed for a #SafeSeptember!

4 weeks left to preparešŸ˜·šŸ«ā³ #osstf
The #backtoschool plan:
- mandatory masks for grades 4+, masks encouraged for jk-grade 3
- $309 million to hire 500 public health nurses & 900 custodians, purchase #PPE etc
- full-time elementary non-cohort
- high schools cohorts, mixed online/full time depending on region

3. The thread linked to previously has many sub-threads. I've linked to an important one below.

It contains evidence that children and adults are equally likely to be infected with #SARSCoV2 given the right circumstances.

Reopening American schools will be a disaster. So will keeping them closed.

When the #coronavirus hit, we failed to control it ā€” and Americaā€™s children may pay the eventual price.

Of all the American institutions the pandemic has shut down, none faces pressure to reopen quite like schools do. Pediatricians exhort schools to open their doors wherever possible or risk developmental harm to kids. Working parents are in crisis.

BREAKING: @GovHolcomb will require masks, starting Monday.
Indiana is 31st state to require #masks. Holcomb notes both numbers and rates of #coronavirus cases are rising, including in counties which hadn't been hotspots previously. "We've worked hard to get where we are....We don't want to have to go back."
Holcomb: one of most important reasons to require #masks is that school is starting. "Kids shouldn't get mixed messages" when they leave school. And science is clear that masks make a critical difference.

#SouthKorea has done a fantastic job with #ContactTracing This article analyzed reports for 59,073 contacts of 5,706 #COVID19 index patients. I believe it has important info for decision making related to #SchoolReopening

wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26ā€¦
- Of 10,592 household contacts, 11.8% had #COVID19
- Of 48, 481 nonhousehold contact, 1.9% had #COVID19
- All contacts were monitored for an avg 9.9 days after #SARSCoV2 was detected
- In houses with index 10-19 y.o, 18.6% of contacts had #COVID19
Conclusion
- Rates were higher for contacts of children than adults
- Reports from other countries estimate secondary attack rate for close contact ~ 35%
-High infection rate within family, so use personal protective measures should be used at home to reduce risk of transmission

Thoughts on #SchoolReopening:
Getting kids back to school safely should be a priority. No doubt kids NEED school, not just for education but for social interaction, good mental health, development etc. Additionally it facilities parents/caregivers returning to work.šŸ§µā¤µļø 1/

Controlling community transmission so cases continue downwards until Sept 2020 is critical. That means continuing w/ distancing, masks, hand washing, & limiting gatherings. Thereā€™s only so much that can be done to change schools in this short timeframe. 3/

Letā€™s talk schools opening up and whatā€™s not being talked about. #thread #SchoolReopening #COVID19 Image
We have seen a few school opening plans to date and one theme seems to be present in them, what to do with the fucking sick.

Yes they have temp checks at the doors or getting on the bus and questionares about sickness but mostly nothing about if an outbreak happens.
We have yet to see a plan that requires a PCR test for everyone to be in the school. Students teachers and staff to establish a base line starting point before the opening.
