1. WSJ: With US funding, Ben Hu with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) was studying how coronaviruses infect humans and became ill in November 2019 with symptoms that American officials said were consistent with either Covid-19 or a seasonal illness. wsj.com/articles/u-s-f…
2. @WhiteCoatWaste got the NIAID grant with Ben Hu's name on it. This is the NIH institute that Tony Fauci ran. Ya' know, the guy who said he didn't fund this research?

Document shows Ben Hu is a subcontractor to Peter Daszak's EcoHealth Alliance.

Hu also reports a USAID grant. Image
3. The Journal notes that they reported back in 2021 that these three WIV researchers had fallen sick. Those names remained classified until now: Ben Hu, Yu Ping, and Yan Zhu.

So this has been known in classified documents ... for years! Image

The #ICA23-PostCon about #SciCom was great. One random stranger took this picture of our happy group, but she is not the only person to thank. (1/9) A group of people in front ...
The fine people @UofT’s John M. Kelly Library were great (spontaneous!) hosts for our group. When we had to quickly find a room, they willingly opened the door to us (with @JohnBesley paving the way). (2/9)
Organizing this post-conference was a group effort with @msc_lab’s staff: @Malarija, @pgiuliav, @JL_Egelhofer, and yours truly – thus putting @VolkswagenSt’s efforts in supporting #scicomm to good work. (3/9)

The talks from the @vsac2022 conference symposium I "Realities of Geometries" are now online. If you are interested in #MathArt and #illustratingmath, give them a look here: youtube.com/playlist?list=… (10-15 min. per talk). A short presentation of the talks as thread🧵. (1/5)
First talk is by me, @msmathcomp. I am speaking about the generalization of #Chladni figures to the third dimension. Thereby, the intersection of sound waves becomes tangible, e.g., in the form of a #3dprint. . (2/5)
Second talk is by Teresa Hunyadi (teresahunyadi.com) and @davemurrayrust. They speak about deformations of #PenroseTilings. Their realizations include #CNC millings of the tilings as well as baked clay forms. . (3/5)

The English-speaking folks here might have noticed something very unusual has happened in the Danish media regarding science communication/HEI this past week. I thought I’d give an English summary of what’s been going on, because it is wild 1/
#histsci @BSHSNews #AcademicChatter
The danish broadcasting company, DR, (our BBC) really wanted to engage younger audiences. DR had noticed that young folks watch a lot of videos on YouTube (😂!) and they wanted to get in on that. 2/
#videnerfandemeikkeetsynspunkt
Last year DR released a mission statement on their plans to reach young folks online “We want to show the world of the young, as it is, and not as the adults think it should be”. dr.dk/om-dr/nyheder/… (see translation of screenshot in alt text) 3/ Translation of text from English to danish: We are now getti

I have done a couple of Twitter threads on interesting researchers worth knowing about. I have compiled them here in this thread and will add more in the future. #SciCom Have a look! 🙂🧵👇
1) Douglas Prasher, the man who cloned the original GFP gene.
2) Albert Coons, the man who developed immunofluorescence microscopy in the throes of World War II.

'What else can be done?' asks @hholdenthorp about science communication. Or rather, about 'science communicating scientists'. It's a nice read! Here are some ideas. (1/n)

Let's first acknowledge (or agree with Thorp) that Scicom is a serious expertise on its own. But it's more complex than just that. On the one hand, I'm baffled by how much low-hanging fruit there is for scientists to become just a little better at #scicom. On the other.. (2/n)
I'm equally baffled by the expectations that live in organizations about scicom. As if it's just something scientists can all easily do on the side - level of talent not even considered. So we have a weird nuance here. (3/n)

Bonsoir !

A career is academia is only available to a small % of PhD grads. We need more exposure to the wide range of meaningful careers available to #PhDs. A thread on a professional development course at @UM_RadyFHS @CHRIManitoba, with generous support from @NanaLee03
Grad school traditionally includes the bottom arrow, but what if it also included time to reflect on what you like AND what you are good at, learn about other career options, think strategically about how you spend your time, and learn high quality #scicomm skills?
This course runs PARALLEL to your grad school journey, and has 3 parts. During reflection, you figure out what is important to you, identify the skills you have that are applicable outside of academia and rough sketch a 5-year plan.

Today’s media coverage of fruit juice/cancer offers a chance to see how well outlets follow guidelines for responsible reporting of risk…

(e.g. drawn up by scientists & journalists: royalsociety.org/-/media/Royal_…)

…so wearing my #scicom hat, here’s a /thread:
What matters is reporting of relative AND absolute risk, ideally with equal clarity & prominence.

Relative risk: X doubles the risk of Y (scary?)

But is that increase from 1 in ten to 2 in ten (ok, scary) or 1 in a million to 2 in a million (not so scary)? (=absolute risk)
Today’s news story is a study in the BMJ, for which there was this press release:
eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2…

Relative risk is given in sentence 10; absolute risk is sort-of stated (via total number of cancer cases in the study), but you’d have to do some sums to make it as clear…
